INLD govt flayed for police firing
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, July 20
The Leader of the Opposition in the Haryana Assembly, Mr Bhupinder Singh Hooda, today criticised the Chautala Government for resorting to a lathi charge and police firing on “innocent” people in the name of demolishing the “so-called” illegal constructions at Faridabad yesterday.

Terming the police action as “government-sponsored terrorism” against the people, Mr Hooda alleged that Chief Minister Om Prakash Chautala was responsible for spoiling the peaceful atmosphere prevailing in that area.

Mr Hooda accused Mr Chautala of trying to distract the attention of the people and the administration from the real problems facing the electorate. He said the police firing could not replace a negotiated settlement in a democratic setup.

He said one failed to understand why the Chief Minister was demolishing those colonies where electricity supply, water supply and telephone services had been maintained by the government for years. The government must provide alternative sites before demolishing such colonies.

Genome study a revolution, says Pathak
Tribune News Service

Ambala, July 20
Unfolding of human genome and development of information technology are two great revolutions in the history of science and technology in the present century, Punjab University Vice-Chancellor Dr K.N. Pathak said last night.

Speaking at the installation ceremony of Rotary Club of Ambala, Dr K.N. Pathak said the study of human genome had proved to be beneficial in diseases, particularly, the specific genes that cause several congenital diseases like thalassaemia and leukemic.

In information technology, Prof Pathak said telemedicine was one of the biggest advantages. “It has enabled us to receive specialists and resources from renowned medical centres across the country. The PGI, Chandigarh, AIIMS, New Delhi, and SGPGI, Lucknow, have already been connected via telecommunication,” he said.

Earlier, Mr Ajay Aggarwal took over as the new president of the Rotary Club here. While Mr Perminder Sharma became the new Rotaract President, Mr Devender Bhola was the new Interact president and Mr Sharda Joshi became the new Inner Wheel president. Mr Ajay Aggarwal said creating cancer awareness and setting up a counselling centre at Ambala would be the major project of the Rotary Club.

Meanwhile, the installation ceremony of the Rotary Club of Ambala Central also took place last night. Mr Ajit Singh and Mr Vinod Jangra were installed as President and Secretary, respectively. Mr Ankush Gupta was the new president of the Rotaract Club and the Akshey Garg was installed as Interact Club president. Mr Rajinder was the chief guest.

Educating students on road safety

Karnal, July 20
Haryana school students will take lessons on road safety and traffic rules apart from their routine studies.

The beginning of “long-term strategy in traffic education and awareness” which will be made available from tomorrow in the schools of Panipat and Faridabad districts will soon be implemented in the whole state.

Informing this, Mr Saurav Singh, SSP Haryana Highway Patrol and Road Safety, said the minds of the students in schools “are still impressionable and they can easily be made aware of the rules of the traffic and road safety like the use of reflections, helmets and seat-belt in a better way”.

“Challans serve as part of a short-term strategy as against education and awareness which are part of the strategy,” Mr Saurav Singh opined.

He said Sub-Inspectors and Assistant Sub-Inspectors operating at the traffic and centres in the districts had been specially trained. They would go to the schools equipped with “written material” and deliver lessons in necessary rules after the school assembly, the SSP stated.

Besides quizzes, essay competitions on road safety would also be organised, he added.

Students, below 18 years of age, would be barred from bringing two-wheelers to the schools in the state. This would be done with the help of the school managements, he said. — UNI
