Leadership issue closed: Naidu
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, June 7
BJP President M. Venkaiah Naidu today termed the leadership issue as closed and refused to be drawn into discussion on the reported comment of HRD Minister Murli Manohar Joshi’s that the party had not taken any decision on projecting Prime Minister A.B. Vajpayee as 'Vikas Purush’.

"As far this (leadership) issue is concerned, the Prime Minister, the Deputy Prime Minister and I as party President have clarified there is no issue, no controversy. I will maintain the party’s tradition of not commenting on public statements of party leaders", Mr Naidu told newspersons after returning from a party conclave held in Guwahati.

On being asked about Dr Joshi’s comments that Mr Vajpayee should be projected as “Vikas Purush”, Mr Naidu gave a rather cryptic reply and said, “Any suggestion made in the interests of the party are always welcome."

Meanwhile it is learnt that RSS chief K. Sudershan has advised the BJP that it shifted the focus towards ideology rather than on leadership.

Mr Sudershan’s reported statement comes ahead on the scheduled conclave of the BJP to be held in Mumbai on June 17.

The BJP President is learnt to have received a call from the RSS chief from Nagpur last evening advising him that the party should shift the focus towards policies and programmes rather than on personalities.

Mr Naidu told newspersons that the BJP would press for convening a joint session of Parliament to repeal the controversial IMDT Act in Assam.

The IMDT Act, which is different from the Foreigners Act, was part of the Assam Accord between the Centre and the All-Assam Students’ Union (AASU) in 1985.

However, the AASU has since been demanding the repeal of the IMDT Act as the complexity of the legislation has failed to achieve the primary objective of deporting illegal foreigners entering the state from neighbouring countries — primarily Bangladesh.

Friends can change, not neighbours: PM
Our Correspondent

Nirmali (Bihar), June 7
Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee attempted to silence his critics over his peace bid with Pakistan saying, “Friends can change, not neighbours”. He, however, said before talks could start, Pakistan would have to reduce tension.

Addressing a gathering of around two lakh people here in Supaul district of Bihar, he said people should understand that friendship with Pakistan was not optional as it was a neighbour. He was addressing the gathering after laying the foundation stone of a 22-km-long railway bridge at Nirmali being constructed at a cost of Rs 350 crore.

“Efforts for friendship are on. For those who raise questions on the need for fresh peace initiatives with Pakistan, I wish to say, friends can change not neighbours”, Mr Vajpayee said.

Referring to the need for bilateral relations from both sides in all fields, he reiterated that for that the gaps between the two countries had to be bridged. “Wars cannot solve problems, three wars have taken place. We need to take lessons from those,” he said.

The Prime Minister spoke of the need to restore confidence and reduce tension between the two nations. “For talks to take place, the raised swords will have to be lowered”, Mr Vajpayee said.

He spoke of his efforts at development of India at all fronts and global expectations from India. India is planning to send its scientists on the moon but “before that we want to alight a lamp of development in each house of the country,” he added.

Defence Minister, George Fernandes said to reporters at Purnia yesterday, “On the basis of information reaching us, it appears that Pakistan this time is really serious about starting dialogue with India”. He was accompanying the Prime Minister.

Survey of Christians: NCM warns Gujarat

Ahmedabad, June 7
The National Commission for Minorities (NCM) today warned the Gujarat Government that it would recommend ‘action’ if it conducted any survey on Christians even as their leaders said they were dissatisfied with the assessment of its Chairman Tarlochan Singh on the problems faced by the community in the state.

The NCM chief, who is on a two-day visit to the state in the wake of complaints by Christians against the state government, said: “We had a meeting with the Chief Secretary and the Home Secretary who assured us that no such survey was carried out. But if any case of government knowingly conducting any such survey on Christian household is reported, we will definitely recommend action”.

Disagreeing with his assessment, Father Cedric Prakash said: “We have all the necessary documents, police records and Minister of State for Home Amit Shah’s statement made on the floor of Assembly regarding surveys being conducted”.

“How can the commission deny that there is no such survey by the Gujarat Government?” Father Cedric, who heads an NGO working for human rights, asked.

“When the Home Minister himself admits in the House that such surveys are being conducted, who is the NCM to deny that? Why are they making such funny statements?”, a visibly agitated Prakash remarked. PTI

No poll alliance with Cong: CPI(M)
Our Correspondent

Kolkata, June 7
The CPI(M) will not make any electoral alliance or seat adjustment with the Congress in the forthcoming elections, declared Mr Sitaram Yechuri, politburo member, after the first-round session of the party’s central committee held at Promode Bhavan in Alimuddin Street today.

Over 80 members, including 15 politburo leaders, attended the central committee meeting which discussed and reviewed the country’s political situation vis-à-vis the strategy the party would adopt against the BJP and other communal forces in the forthcoming Assembly elections and the Lok Sabha poll.

After the meeting, Mr Yechuri said as a policy matter they would not make any alliance with the Congress but they were ready to extend a conditional support to Congress candidates in the elections for defeating the BJP and other communal parties for the larger interest of the country.

The Assembly elections will be held in five states — Delhi, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Rajasthan and Mizoram — in November.

Mr Yechuri said the CPI(M) was now making a fresh bid to strengthen the anti-BJP third front as an alternative to the NDA where all secular parties would be invited to join.

He admitted that though such front was already there, but it was not active. The CPI(M) would take the initiative to make the front moving and workable.

However, a section of the party leadership was not very hopeful about the future of the third front since some major designers of the front, namely Mr V.P. Singh, Mr Chandra Sekhar, Mr Mulayam Singh Yadav, Mr I.K. Gujaral and Mr Laloo Prasad Yadav, have either withdrawn themselves from active politics or switched over to a new political alignment.

Chautala raps fodder gift in-charges

Jodpur, June 7
The Haryana Chief Minister Mr Om Prakash Chautala, today accused the Rajasthan government of selling most of the free fodder sent by his state for drought hit areas in the desert state.

“We sent 10,000 quintals of fodder to help cattle breeders in desert state but the Rajasthan Government distributed only 1,9 10 quintals among needy persons and sold the remaining in the market,” Mr Chautala, Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) chief, alleged while addressing a kisan rally here.

Calling upon the people of Rajasthan to ‘rout Congress’ in the year-end Assembly elections, he said only by bringing a peasant Chief Minister in the office would improve their lot.

“Rural development does not figure in the scheme of things of Congress politicians in Rajasthan who are completely city oriented,” he said. He said the INLD was receiving tremendous response in its rallies being held in different parts of Rajasthan. UNI
