ILLEGAL SAND MINING
Exchequer suffers Rs 3 cr loss; 20 booked
Ludhiana, June 7
The local Vigilance Bureau has booked 20 persons, including two serving district development and panchayat officers (DDPOs), for causing a loss of Rs 3 crore to the state exchequer by indulging in illegal sand mining in Manewal village.

Ludhiana, June 7
Cutting across party lines, leaders of different political parties today appealed to people to exercise utmost restraint and not get carried away with the propaganda by certain vested interests following the incidents at Talhan village in Jalandhar district.

Police remand for 9 officials
Ludhiana, June 7
Duty Magistrate Jasbir Singh today remanded nine officials of the Punjab Water Supply and Sewerage Board, in police custody till June 9. The officials were arrested by the Vigilance Bureau in connection with the Rs 4.5 crore scam.

Murder of SAD leader’s  son: main suspect held
Doraha, June 7
The main suspect in the murder of the son of Mr Bharpoor Singh Rauni, Circle President, SAD, was arrested by the Payal police last evening. Police sources said Jarnail Singh, son of Gurdial Singh of Rauni village, had admitted to having committed the murder. The other three suspects, including Gagandeep Singh, alias Nona, son of Jarnail Singh, are still at large.

Residents go without water for days
Ludhiana, June 7
Residents of the Ward 55 in the Islam Ganj area of the city today held a protest against the alleged failure of the city administration to provide regular supply of water for the past one week. The residents claimed that they had been carrying buckets of water from other localities for household purposes.

Missing youth was murdered, says police
Mandi Ahmedgarh, June 7
With the arrest of three persons, the police claims to have solved the case of a missing youth of Kanganwal village, who was suspected to have been killed by his wife and her paramour. The youth, Balbir Singh, had been missing since May 25.

Trader beaten up, robbed
Mandi Ahmedgarh, June 7
A local industrialist was beaten up and robbed by three miscreants near Dehlon village late last night. Mr Vikas Kumar, a partner in a cotton mill, said that he was travelling in his car when three car-borne youths forcibly stopped him. 

3 beaten up by neighbour
Khanna, June 7
Three persons, including a woman, were allegedly beaten up by their neighbour at Bhamadhi village, 10 km from here, last night. Guddo, a neighbour of Ram Pal, called the latter’s daughter to her house yesterday afternoon.

Summer camp for tiny tots
Doraha, June 7
A two-week summer camp for children of five to 18 years age group is being organised at Sri Guru Harkrishan Public School, Doraha.
It is a gala time for tiny tots who are attending this camp as otherwise not much recreational entertainment is available for them here.

BCM school students display creations
Ludhiana, June 7
A two-week-long summer workshop for students of BCM Arya Model Senior Secondary School, Shastri Nagar, concluded with an exhibition by the students for the parents here today. The students presented the items that they had prepared during their hobby classes.

Painting contest for students 
Ludhiana, June 7
As many as 125 students attending a summer workshop at Love Dale Montessori participated in a painting contest held here today. While most of the students painted landscapes, there were others who painted a night scene, a temple, a modelling show and other scenes.

NSS camp concludes

The 10-day NSS camp of SDP College for Women ended on the college campus today. Mr Balraj Bhasin, Chairman of the college, was the chief guest of the concluding day’s function.

Special Lok Adalat settles 314 cases
Ludhiana, June 7
As many as 314 cases involving above an amount of Rs 50 lakh pertaining to the Cooperative Credit Institutions were amicably settled in a Special Lok-Adalat organised here today. A total of 420 cases were placed before the Lok Adalat for disposal.

Hockey club formed

Noted sportspersons and sports organisers of the city held a meeting here yesterday under the chairmanship of Mr Shivtar Singh Bajwa, president, District Football Association, and formed the Kids Promoting Hockey Club.

Ambedkar cricket meet from June 25
Ludhiana, June 7
The third edition of the Dr B R Ambedkar Cricket Cup Tournament (day and night) will be conducted from June 25 to 28 here at the Daresi grounds. A decision in this regard was taken during a meeting of the local unit of the youth wing of the Dr B R Ambedkar Sports Board.
