The elections to Pundri and Kalayat Municipal Committees in the district concluded peacefully last evening. At Kalayat 90 percent voters exercised their franchise to elect 13 members while at Pundri about 85 per cent voters cast their votes to elect 13 members.

Defamation case
Chandigarh, January 20
On a petition filed by IAS officer Rupan Deol Bajaj seeking the transfer of a defamation case from the court of Sirsa’s Chief Judicial Magistrate, the state of Haryana on Monday sought time for filing reply. The High Court had earlier stayed further proceedings before the trial court in the case.

Second phase of telephony soon
Ambala, January 20
The second phase of mobile telephony in Haryana is going to start soon. Talking to mediapersons here today, the General Manager Telecom, Ambala SSA, Mr V.S. Srivastava, said the purchase order for the equipment to be installed in the second phase had already been placed.

    Pundri, Kalayat MC poll results

    The elections to Pundri and Kalayat Municipal Committees in the district concluded peacefully last evening. At Kalayat 90 percent voters exercised their franchise to elect 13 members while at Pundri about 85 per cent voters cast their votes to elect 13 members. The low temperature and foggy weather failed to dampen the spirits of voters who started making long queues outside polling booths. The district administration had made elaborate security arrangements to ensure peaceful elections.

    At Pundri of the 10,114 registered voters 9,177 cast their votes. In ward No. 1 Bhoop Singh Saini was declared elected, after he polled 553 votes and defeated Romesh Saini. In ward No. 2 Seema Rani defeated Sheela Rani by 75 votes. In ward No. 3 Jagdish Singh defeated Ishwar Singh while Ishwar defeated Suresh by 30 votes in Ward No. 4. Fateh Singh defeated Ram Pal and Urmila defeated Kamlesh in Wards No. 5 and 6, respectively.

    In ward No. 7 Ram Parkash Gogi defeated Ashok, Kiran defeated Veena in ward No. 8. While Shanti Sarup defeated Devi Dayal in Ward No. 9. In ward No. 10 Savita defeated Shiksha. From ward No. 11 Roshni was declared elected after defeating Nirmala. In ward No. 12 Pala Ram defeated Chandan Saini while in ward No. 13 Nafe Singh defeated Sultan Singh by a margin of 44 votes.

    Mr Rajbir Dhiman, Tehsildar, Kaithal, was the returning officer and the DDPO, Mr Chand Ram Sharma, and to J.B.D. Garg, Executive Engineer, HVPN, Pundri, were also present during the elections.

    According to reports received here from Kalayat, the most interesting contest was witnessed in ward No. 11 from where two former presidents Mr Devi Dayal Mittal and Mr Mohinder Singla contested elections against each other, but Mr Mittal was declared elected after defeating Mr Singla by 149 votes.

    In ward No. 1 Jang Bahadur Rana defeated Ravi Shanker by 137 votes. From ward No. 2 Gian Chand was elected after defeating Phool Singh. In ward No. 3 Rubi Devi defeated Om Pati by 95 votes. In ward No. 4 Romesh Singla defeated Lajpat Rai by 177 votes.

    In ward No. 5 Raj Kali Rana was declared elected after recounting of votes. In ward No. 6 Adesh Rana defeated Darshna devi. In ward No. 7 Sushila Devi was declared unopposed. In ward No. 8 Balbir Singh defeated Dharam Singh by 115 votes while in ward No. 9 Bhagwan Singh defeated former Mandi President Tirlok Chand by 169 votes. In ward No. 10 Raju Kaushik defeated Mani Ram by 207 votes.

    In ward No. 11 Devi Dayal Mittal defeated Mohinder Singla by 147 votes. In ward No. 12 Suraj Parkash defeated Raj Kumar by 67 votes while Surinder Kaur defeated her nearest rival by 337 votes in ward No 13.

    Mr Sanjay Rai, DRO, Kaithal, was the returning officer and Mr J.P.Kaushik ADC Karnal was the election observer for the election.

    Defamation case

    On a petition filed by IAS officer Rupan Deol Bajaj seeking the transfer of a defamation case from the court of Sirsa’s Chief Judicial Magistrate, the state of Haryana on Monday sought time for filing reply. The High Court had earlier stayed further proceedings before the trial court in the case.

    In her petition against the state, Chief Minister O.P. Chautala’s son Abhey Singh Chautala and other respondents, Ms Bajaj had earlier stated that her life and liberty was in danger. Giving details, she had submitted that Mr Abhey Singh Chautala had a strong hold over affairs at Sirsa and could manage everything. Her counsel had added that a mob of 200 was present when she arrived for attending the proceedings on October 10 last year.

    Going into the background of the case, counsel had submitted that a complaint was filed by Mr Abhey Singh Chautala in March 2001 after the publication of a news item in a local newspaper on the Ruchika molestation case. Counsel had added that defamatory words had not been used against Chief Minister O.P. Chautala.

    Second phase of telephony soon

    The second phase of mobile telephony in Haryana is going to start soon.

    Talking to mediapersons here today, the General Manager Telecom, Ambala SSA, Mr V.S. Srivastava, said the purchase order for the equipment to be installed in the second phase had already been placed. “The new equipment would generate an additional capacity of 68,000 lines. The supply of equipment is likely to be received by the end of February and more than one lakh connections are likely to be released by March 2003,” he said.

    Mr Srivastava said 37,088 mobile connections had been released upto December 31. “Out of these 18,195 connections are post paid and 18,893 connections are pre-paid,” he said.

    The GM, Telecom, said STD code of Sonepat was being changed from 01264 to 0130 from January 31. The local number will change from six digits to seven digits by prefixing ‘2’. Similarly, STD code of Panipat is being changed from 01742 to 0180. The numbers will be changed from six to seven digits by prefixing ‘2’. “With these changes, the process of changing over to new number scheme in Haryana will be completed,” he said. Mr Srivastava said mobile services had been launched in Naraingarh in Ambala SSA, and upgraded customer service centre had also been inaugurated on January 3, 2003.

    He said BSNL had announced new tariff for cellular mobile service Under Plan-325, new charges for STD calls from mobile for a distance of over 500 km are Rs 4.80 per minute with 60 seconds pulse rate. This rate shall apply uniformly for all 24 hours. “With this change, BSNL has introduced the lowest cellular rates,” he said.

    The Second All-India BSNL Weightlifting, Power Lifting and Best Physique Tournament was held at Kurukshetra from January 11 to 15. Mr Satish Chander of Haryana telecom circle has been declared “Mr BSNL” in the best physique event, Mr Pradeep Saini from MTNL New Delhi was adjudged the best weightlifter and Mr MH Sanmunkha of Karnataka was declared “Strong Man”. The team championship for weightlifting was awarded to Andhra Pradesh telecom circle. The team championship for power lifting was awarded to Kerala telecom circle, Mr Srivastava said.Top

     

     

    Women build hope for planned family

    The family planning programme of the Health Department in this district, it seems, is running completely on the shoulders of women.

    According to the district health authorities, 4572 women underwent family planning operations during the year 1997-98. Against them not a single male opted for this operation. The same was the case next year. During the year 1998-99, 4027 women were operated upon for family planning surgery. But not a single male came forward for such an operation.

    In 1999-2000, three men came forward for their surgical operation against 3361 women. The number of males coming forward for family planning operations reached nine during the year 2000-01. The number of women opting for operations during this year was 3844. Similarly during the year 2001-02, 4840 women opted for family planning operations while only seven persons underwent these operations during the year. Only four men were sterilised from April 2002 to December 2002 while the number of women sterilised during the period is much higher. A senior doctor of the department said when health workers approached a family for sterilisation the male members avoid them.

    Lok Jan Shakti to go it alone in HP

    The president of Lok Jan Shakti and former Union Railway Minister, Mr Ram Vilas Paswan, said his party would contest the Himachal Pradesh Assembly Elections on its own.

    While on way to Nahan for election campaign today morning he stopped over at Saha close to Ambala Cantt for several minutes. The former state president of Dalit Sena, Mr Amar Dass Chudiala, and his supporters welcomed him. An ex-army personnel presented a sword to Mr Paswan on this occasion.

    Talking to mediapersons he said the Lok Shakti would field its candidates in most of the constituencies in Himachal. Replying to a question he said his party would not make alliance with any other party in the elections. He said the people of Himachal has been wanting change in the state. He did not disclosed the number of the seats to be contested by his party in the state.

    When asked what would be the major issues taken up by his party in the elections, he said he would disclose those during the election rallies being organised in support of his party candidates. However, he expressed hope that his party candidates would perform well in the elections.Top

     

    Labs for Haryana middle schools

    The Haryana Government will set up libraries in all primary schools and laboratories in all middle schools, Mr Bahadur Singh, Education Minister, said here today. The government would also impart 20 days’ training to teachers under its ‘sarv shiksha abhiyan’ and also open district institutes of education and training at Kaithal, Panipat, Panchkula, Rewari and Yamunanagar.

    Power cuts hit water supply

    Erratic power supply for the past many days in the town has now affected the drinking water supply also. Consequently, in the freezing cold residents are experiencing difficulty in getting drinking water. Besides, these sudden power cuts have also disturbed the daily routine of the residents. With annual examination nearing, students are also finding it difficult to study.

    Ambala girl brings laurels

    Kawaljit Kaur, a student of Kendriya Vidyalaya No. 1, Ambala cantonment, has returned after participating in the international Scouts and Guides jamboree held in Thailand.

    Scouts and guides drawn from 113 conrties participated. Out of 2,000 participants, 250 were from India. Eight scouts and guides from Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan participated and Kanwaljit Kaur was one of them.

    A Rashtrapati Puruskar awardee Guide, Kawaljit Kaur, said the jamboree was a fascinating experience. She visited Royal Palace, Pattaya beach and Buddhist temple. Top

     

    Burglaries

     

    Ambala
    Three incidents of burglaries were reported at Ambala Cantt last night.

    In Kabari Bazaar, burglars broke the locks of two shops and took away cash lying in the cash box. In Machhi Mohalla, also thieves broke into an electric goods shop last night and took away cash from there.

    In Sarafa Bazaar, around five burglars attempted to break the locks of two jewellery shops. The burglars tied the watchman of the market with ropes and tried to break the shutter but they could not succeed. The police today morning visited the shops. Separate cases have been registered.     Rs 33,000 stolen

    Kalka
    A theft was reported at a house located in Dharam Pura Colony here yesterday. The police has registered a case under Sections 457 and 380 of the IPC and is investigating the matter.

    Mr Tilak Raj, the owner of the house, said the thieves took away Rs 33,000 in cash besides household items.TNSTop
