Chautala ‘refused’ to give funds to ex-Fiji PM
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, January 17
A controversy has erupted in Haryana over the funds collected by the ruling INLD for Mr Mohinder Chaudhary, former Prime Minister of Fiji, when he had come to his home state after he was deposed.

In a statement issued here today the Leader of Opposition, Mr Bhupinder Singh Hooda, accused the Chief Minister, Mr Om Prakash Chautala, of having committed “an act unworthy of a Chief Minister” by refusing to give crores of rupees collected from the people of Haryana to Mr Chaudhary.

However, the President of the Haryana INLD, Mr Sher Singh Badshami, denied the allegations levelled by Mr Hooda and said the money could not be given to Mr Chaudhary because of certain legal constraints.

Accusing Mr Chautala of running the state government like a tyrant and reducing the ministers and his party MLAs to “the status of bonded labourers”, Mr Hooda said they did not have the guts to ask the Chief Minister to give account of the money he had collected on behalf of Mr Chaudhary. Mr Hooda also accused the BJP of keeping silence.

Mr Badshami said there was a legal hitch over transferring money to a foreign country. The entire money, he said, had been deposited in a nationalised bank. It could be withdrawn by him (Mr Badshami) and one more person. Till date, he said, no money had been withdrawn from the account.

Asserting that Mr Chautala held Mr Chaudhary in the high esteem, Mr Badshami said the day the INLD supremo wanted to meet Mr Chaudhary in Delhi, the latter was busy with a number of public functions. Later, Mr Chautala was pre-occupied. He said the money would now be used to promote the cause of all those people of Indian Origin who were in public life in the countries of their settlement.

IBC seminar opens
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, January 17
The Haryana Finance Minister, Prof Sampat Singh, today urged engineers to change the popular negative perception about their colleagues working in the government sector so that they could derive their authority commensurate with their responsibility.

Prof Sampat singh was inaugurating the two-day mid-term session and seminar on “Management and Maintenance of Built Environment” organised jointly by the Indian Buildings Congress (IBC) and the Haryana Public Works Department here today.

He urged the delegates from all over the country that the professionals should not forget the project after its completion. Rather, it should be made mandatory for them to remain attached with the project to get feedback from the users for a number of years so that improvements could be made in future projects. Prof Sampat Singh advised the professionals to disseminate their knowledge to the lowest level.

The Commissioner and Secretary, PWD (B&R), Haryana, Mr Naresh Gulati, said the seminar was a timely step in order to save the massive national built-up wealth which required utmost attention. The recommendations of the seminar would definitely influence and find a place in the infrastructure policy of the state government.

In his presidential address, the President of the IBC and Engineer-in-Chief, Delhi PWD, Mr Deepak Narayan, said the congress had a vision of having built environment which was conducive to good living, affordable aesthetics, cost competitive, technology driven and capable of meeting the needs of Indian population.

Mr P. Krishnan, a former Chief Engineer Works, said the poor quality of construction was one of the main sources of problems encountered by maintenance engineers. Among the other sources he listed inadequate funds and lack of proper documentation about the building plans.

Among those who were present on the occasion were Mr R.R. Sheoran, Engineer-in-Chief, Haryana PWD; Mr M.K. Aggarwal, Chief Engineer, Haryana PWD; Mr O.P. Goel, Founder President of the IBC; and Mr H.S. Dogra, Secretary of the congress.

As many as 28 papers will be presented in two technical sessions to be held tomorrow.
