BJP stands by Chautala

Chandigarh, January 14
The toast of today’s all-party meeting on the SYL issue here today was certainly the support received by INLD Chief Om Prakash Chautala in his endeavour from the alliance partner BJP.

Though officially a supporter of the INLD Government in Haryana, the BJP has been its bitter critic on various issues such as the education policy, the law and order situation and so forth. The party’s top leaders in the state, namely, Mr Rattan Lal Kataria, President of the Haryana BJP, Mr I.D. Swamy, Union Minister of State for Home; and Mr Krishan Pal Gujjar, leader of the party in the Assembly, besides Mr K S Sangwan, MP, were among the party representatives present at the meeting.

Incidentally, while Mr Gujjar has turned into a bitter foe of Mr Chautala for instituting a case by the Haryana Vigilance Department against him, Mr K.S. Sangwan also is not expected to be happy with the Chief Minister as a retired civil servant related to him was recently arrested on corruption charges.

Nevertheless, they participated in the meeting alongwith INLD MPs Ajay Singh Chautala, Mr Sushil Indora and INLD ministers Sampat Singh and Mr Dhirpal Singh and empowered the “Chief Minister of Haryana to take any further action in this regard” in a resolution passed unanimously at the meeting.

Mr Kataria later told reporters here that they would back Mr Chautala totally on the SYL issue . He gave embarrassed smiles and only mumbled something when he was pushed by reporters who asked him in the presence of the Chief Minister as to why he frequently issued statements against Mr Chautala.

Political interests were also manifest in the meeting as two important opposition parties, the Congress and the HVP, did not take part. The decision to meet the Prime Minister by a Haryana delegation led by the Chief Minister for completion of the canal by a central agency is also believed to have been taken in view of the Congress demonstration in Delhi tomorrow.

SYL: Cong ‘won’t allow injustice’
Our Correspondent

Fatehabad, January 14
A former Haryana legislator and former Chief Minister, Mr Bhajan Lal’s son, Mr Kuldeep Singh Bishnoi, yesterday said the SYL issue was of prime importance for Haryana and the Congress would not allow any injustice to the people of the state.

Mr Bishnoi was addressing a meeting of Congress workers at the local Ram Sewa Samiti Dharamshala in connection with the party’s proposed demonstration in Delhi.

He said certain parties were indulging in politics on this and said merely because the SYL was an emotive issue. It was not proper for parties to play with the emotions of people. He said the Congress treated this as the most important issue and whatever portion of the canal had been constructed, was done during the tenure of the Congress. He said the party would not allow anyone to jeopardise the interests of the state on this issue. He called upon party workers to reach Delhi in large numbers on January 15 so that the central government could be pressurised to safeguard the interests of the state in this regard.

Agricultural policy needed: Jakhar
Our Correspondent

Kaithal, January 14
The former Lok Sabha Speaker and senior Congress leader, Mr Balram Jakhar, has blamed the Central Government for not having any agricultural policy.

Mr Jakhar was addressing a press conference along with Mr S.S. Surjewala, former HPCC chief, at the residence of Mr Tejinder Mann, a former Haryana Minister here today. Mr Jakhar took to task the Central Government for its failure on various fronts and said it had created a mess on all fronts.

He said by deploying troops on the borders the government spent about Rs 8,000 crore and it could not achieve any result. The withdrawal of troops had made our country a laughing stock in the eyes of world community.

Mr Jakhar favoured a national water policy and resolving of river water disputes through consensus.

The former HPCC chief, Mr S.S. Surjewala, said when Mr Parkash Singh Badal was the Chief Minister of Punjab Mr Chautala never tried to solve the SYL canal issue and now when the Supreme Court had given its verdict in favour of Haryana he was not making any serious effort to press the central government for the completion of the canal.

Mr Surjewala criticised the state government for its recent waiver scheme announced for power consumers. He said the government policy to charge Rs 20,000 as non-refundable security for reconnection of tubewells was a cruel joke with the farmers. He demanded the immediate withdrawal of these instructions.

HVPN to buy power from Nathpa
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, January 14
The Haryana Vidyut Prasaran Nigam (HVPN) today signed an agreement with the Satluj Jal Vidyut Nigam Limited (SJVNL) to purchase power to be generated from the Nathpa Jhakri Hydro-electric project in Himachal Pradesh. The project has been constructed by the SJVNL (earlier, Nathpa Jhakri Power Corporation Limited), a joint venture of the Government of India and the Government of HP. The 250-MW first unit of the 1500-MW project is likely to start generation by the last week of March this year.

Stating this here today, a spokesperson of the HVPN said of the total capacity of this project, Haryana would get a share of about 64 MW, and would purchase additional power from HP or other states. Himachal would get 12 per cent as its share of the total power generated from the project. Although the cost of the power is yet to be finalised by the Central Electricity Regulatory Commission, he said, the anticipated cost to the bulk customers would be Rs 2.70 per unit. This agreement would be valid for 35 years, from the date of commencement of power generation.

He said the Nathpa Jhakri project had special importance for the Northern Grid because of its capability to generate maximum power during peak load hours. The project has storage capacity which can meet the requirement for the operation of all six machines for a maximum period of 4-5 hours during the low discharge period. The annual generation potential on a 90 per cent dependable year flow pattern is 6590 million units. In addition, Haryana would be able to get a part of the unallocated capacity from the project, he said.
