Attend SYL meeting,
Chautala asks Oppn Jind, January 10 The Chief Minister was addressing a meeting of the panches, sarpanches and members of the gram vikas samitis here today. On this occasion he also released a booklet about the development work undertaken in the district. Mr Chautala criticised the decision of the Haryana Pradesh Congress to stage a dharna in front of the residence of the Prime Minister on the SYL issue and said instead the Congress should stage a dharna in front of the residence of the Chief Minister, Punjab. He said under the Devi Lal Puraskar Yojna the panchayats whose performance would be outstanding at the district and state levels would be given a cash award of Rs 5 lakh and Rs 10 lakh, respectively, for development in their villages. He assured the farmers that his government would give them adequate power as 792 MW of additional power had already been added to the power kitty of the state during his tenure. He said the work on the seventh and eighth units of the Panipat thermal plant had been given to BHEL with the condition to complete it within 29 months. He said the Union Government had agreed to give loan for the construction of the 500 MW Yamuna thermal plant at Yamunanagar. Mr Krishan Mohan, Secretary, Public Relations, highlighted the achievements of the state government in the past three years. An exhibition on the development of Haryana was organised by the Public Relations Department on the occasion. |
Haryana Cong rift deepens Chandigarh, January 10 Addressing a press conference here, Rao Inderjit Singh, MLA, and a senior Congress leader of the Ahirwal belt; and Mr Raghubir Singh Kadiyan, MLA, also announced that they would organise a rally at Jhajjar on March 2 to demand completion of the SYL canal. Mr Kadiyan, who is chief of the Jhajjar DCC, would be the convener of the rally. The rally would also focus on the issue of inequitable distribution of the Ravi-Beas waters in the state. Rao Inderjit Singh alleged that since 1970, 2 MAF of Ravi-Beas waters was coming to Haryana through the Narwana canal but only Sirsa and Hisar districts were benefiting from it. While Sirsa is the home district of Chautala clan, whose member, Mr Om Prakash Chautala, is the present Chief Minister, Mr Bhajan Lal, who had three stints as the Chief Minister of Haryana, hails from Hisar. The southern districts of the state such as Rewari, Mahendragarh, Bhiwani etc were being deprived of this water which had been monopolised by Hisar and Sirsa districts, the Congress legislator alleged. Asked whether the rally on March 2 was being held to target those politicians who had ensured better supply of water for Sirsa and Hisar districts, Rao Inderjit Singh evaded a direct reply and said that the rally would also demand completion of the SYL canal in Punjab. Mr Raghubir Singh Kadiyan, a staunch loyalist of CLP leader Bhupinder Singh Hooda, said Mr Hooda as well as party legislators such as Mr Jaiparkash Barwala, Mr Shadilal Batra, Mr Sher Singh, Mr Jitender Malik etc and former PCC chief Mr Birender Singh would attend the Jhajjar rally. Asked whether Mr Bhajan Lal would take part in the rally, which was being dubbed as a state-level affair, Mr Kadiyan said he had not yet received confirmation from the HPCC chief. It was also announced that a workers meeting of the party would be held at Jind on February 2 to streamline preparations for the March 2 rally. About the possibility of participation by members of the pro-Hooda faction in the demonstration being organised under the leadership of the PCC chief in Delhi on January 15, Rao Inderjit Singh said: “There are still four days left for us to take a decision”. Rao Inderjit Singh said he had not yet postponed the January 15 meeting of party workers at Narnaul which clashed with the programme announced by Mr Bhajan Lal. He, however, added that the workers’ meeting was “a small thing” while the SYL issue was of great importance to Haryana. Certain vested interests were working to politicise the SYL issue, adding that even if water flowed to Haryana through the canal, a section of the users would be deprived of it. |

HIGH COURT Chandigarh, January 10 Counsel for the petitioner had earlier contended that the Commission of Inquiry on Prohibition in Haryana had passed an order on November 18 whereby it had accepted the former minister’s request and had directed that the arguments in the case shall be heard after the decision of civil writ petitions pending in the court. He had further contended that the petitioner had, however, received a notice on December 28 requiring him to appear before the commission on December 30 and that the proceedings before the commission had been resumed on a reconsideration of the matter. Going into the background of the case, counsel had submitted that the petitioner was Prohibition and Excise Minister in the government headed by Bansi Lal of the Haryana Vikas Party in alliance with the Bharatiya Janata Party. The Commission on Prohibition was, subsequently, notified to inquire into the reasons of implementation and lifting of prohibition, besides the pecuniary gains to the individuals and selling of liquor during the prohibition period. |
