Sonia not to mediate on SYL issue Chandigarh, January 2 The HPCC chief was talking to reporters after presiding over a meeting of office bearers of the Congress here today. The meeting was held in connection with the HPCC’s programme of organising a demonstration on the SYL issue in front of the Prime Minister’s residence in Delhi on January 15, the deadline set by the Supreme Court for completion of the canal by the Punjab Government. Mr Bhajan Lal said that at least one lakh persons from Haryana would first gather at the Ramlila Grounds in Delhi and then march toward the residence of the Prime Minister. The HPCC would present a memorandum to the Prime Minister demanding the handing over of the work of completion of the canal to the BRO, a central government agency. When asked whether he really expect that the remaining portion of the canal could be constructed, Mr Bhajan said, “The canal will be completed when I will become the Chief Minister again. The work of the canal started when I was the Chief Minister of Haryana and the maximum work of the canal was also carried out during my tenure”. While ruling out the Congress’ participation in the all-party meeting convened by Chief Minister, Om Prakash Chautala, on the SYL issue for January 14, Mr Bhajan Lal alleged that Mr Chautala did not pursue the SYL issue when Mr Parkash Singh Badal was the Punjab Chief Minister because Mr Chautala and Mr Badal were close friends. Once Mr Badal’s Government had been replaced by the Congress, Mr Chautala’s interest in the SYL canal had resumed. Asked why the work of the canal could not be taken up when the Congress was in power in both Punjab and Haryana as well as at the Centre, the HPCC chief replied that the situation at that time was not conducive. He added that Congress leaders cutting across factional affiliations would take part in the January 15 programme. Asked about a rally proposed to be held at Rewari on January 15 by Rao Inderjit Singh, a senior Congress leader opposed to Mr Bhajan Lal, the HPCC chief said the rally would be cancelled. Meanwhile, the leader of the Opposition in the Haryana Assembly, Mr Bhupinder Singh Hooda, has stated that the all-party meeting would serve no purpose. Mr Chautala should rather take an all-party delegation to the Prime Minister for expediting the work on the canal. “If the Prime Minister shows reluctance in this matter, the INLD should withdraw its support to the NDA government”, Mr Hooda, added. Mr Chautala should know that the NDA government’s dilly-dallying tactics on SYL canal would be a serious blow to the people of Haryana for whom the canal was like a lifeline. He appealed to Mr Chautala to give up his narrow political ends and work seriously to get the canal completed. |
