Centre not averse to completing SYL canal Chandigarh, December 15 In January last the Supreme Court had ordered that the Punjab Government should complete the canal, which would take waters of the Sutlej to the parched lands of Haryana, before January 15, 2003, failing which the Centre should take up the construction of the canal. Since the Punjab Government led by Capt Amarinder Singh has categorically stated its intention of not completing the canal, the Haryana BJP President, Mr Rattan Lal Kataria, recently met the Union Water Resources Minister, Mr Arjun Charan Sethi, to press him for expediting the construction of the canal. Mr Kataria told TNS today that Mr Sethi indicated that a central agency could be asked to complete the canal after January 15 next. Mr Kataria, who represents the Ambala parliamentary constituency, along with the other four BJP MPs from Haryana met the Prime Minister, Mr Atal Behari Vajpayee, in this connection. The Haryana MPs reportedly told Mr Vajpayee that he should resolve the river waters dispute between Punjab and their state just as he had resolved the Cauvery waters dispute among southern states. The Union Minister of State for Home, Mr I.D. Swami; Mr Sudha Yadav, MP from Mahendragarh; Mr Ram Chander Bainda, MP from Faridabad; and Mr Kishan Singh Sangwan, MP from Sonepat, had accompanied Mr Kataria. Mr Vajpayee is believed to have assured his party MPs that the Centre would not allow any injustice to be done to Haryana. Mr Kataria alleged that Capt Amarinder Singh, who had suffered a political set back following his ill advised interference in the SGPC elections, was trying to save his face by unnecessarily raising the issue of the SYL canal which, the BJP leader said, had already been decided in favour of Haryana by the apex court. He said such tactics were not in the interest of the nation. |

Competition
hits mixer industry Ambala, December 15 Mr
Rajinder Nath, a pioneer of Ambala mixer industries and the Managing
Director of Gopi Appliances, is of the view that Chinese mixers can
not survive in the Indian market for long as these were not specially
designed to cater to Indian conditions and needs. It was a temporary
phase as ultimately customers would prefer Indian mixes, he added. Mr
Nath, who remained the chairman of the Haryana Chamber of Commerce and
Industry, said following the arrival of cheaper mixer and grinders
from China and a few other countries, the Indian mixer manufacturers
should have planned to design cheaper mixers for the lower middle
class consumers. He said home appliances could be exported to Gulf
countries and even to the western countries but the government should
come forward to provide special incentives to small-scale
manufacturers. There are about half a dozen leading mixer
manufacturers in Ambala known for their quality products in the
country. Gopi mixer has maintained the international standard getting
ISI and ISO 2002 certification in home appliances. The manufacturers
want that state government should share a part of excise duty, which
would motivate the units to produce more and also to pay more taxes.
The sales tax on mixers should also be rationalised. The mixer units
of Ambala are fully capable of completing with the mixer and grinders
of machines made by major companies like Bajaj, Sumit, Usha and
Maharaja White line. One of the manufacturers of mixers said the
industry could be developed as a cottage industry in the city and it
could provide jobs to hundreds of skilled and unskilled people. The
government should allow the small manufacturers to sell their produce
through the leading manufacturers and the latter should be granted tax
exemption. |
