Haryana to have mega tourist resort Panchkula, December 13 A three-member South African team led by the Managing Director of Sun International, Mr. Peter D. Bacon , today surveyed two sites in the district — in Pinjore and Morni — for setting up the multi- star resort. This team has come on a special invitation given by the Haryana Chief Minister, Mr Om Prakash Chautala , during the latter’s visit to South Africa last month. The team, accompanied by the Chief Minister, senior officials of the Department of Town and Country Planning, and officers of the local administration, surveyed a site near Pinjore and at Tikkar Taal and Mt. Quail (the hotel set-up by the state Department of Tourism) near Morni. The South African team, which had arrived here earlier this week, has already visited four sites near Gurgaon , within the National Capital Region. Sources in the Department of Town and Country Planning inform that though no site has yet been finalised, the concept will be similar to Sun City. Senior officials in the Department of Town and Country Planning said that Haryana offered the best location for setting up such a resort-because of its proximity to Delhi and the state’s location in the heartland of the country. Not only will this resort give a boost to the economy, it will also help explore the tourism potential in the state, said the Haryana Finance Minister, Mr Sampat Singh. This resort, inform officials, is proposed to be a complete leisure centre for the entire family. The landscaping of this resort will be such that valleys and small hills, and beaches, as in Sun City will be replicated here. This is proposed to be a one-of-its-kind resort and will bring the state on the world tourism map. |
Rs 6 cr to make Kurukshetra heritage city Kurukshetra, December 13 Mr Sampat Singh, Finance Minister, Haryana, who was the chief guest at some events organised to celebrate the Utsav stated that the Union Ministry of Urban Development had sanctioned a project costing Rs 6 crore to develop Kurukshetra as a heritage city. He said the amount would be made available through the Urban Development Department of Haryana. The first instalment of Rs 75 lakh from the Central Government and Rs 50 lakh as the state’s share had already been made available to the Thanesar Municipal Council. This amount would be used by the council for installation of high-mask lights, construction of roads, development of parks, street-lighting and building of office-cum-shop complexes, which could generate income for the council. The Kurukshetra district administration had already submitted its proposal to the Haryana Finance Minister for undertaking projects which could promote Kurukshetra as a pilgrimage tourist destination. The Union Tourism Ministry, on its part, had sanctioned Rs 1.25 crore for a light and sound programme at the Jyotisar Teerth. Mr Jagmohan, Union Minister for Tourism, said the project was being executed by the ITDC and would be maintained by the Haryana Tourism. It would be operational by December 30 Furthermore, an all-India institute of hotel management and catering was proposed to be established at a cost of Rs 15 crore near Jyotisar. Mr Jagmohan maintained that the setting up of this institute would provide employment and boost the economy of the district. He told The Tribune there was a proposal to hold an international conference on Archaeology at the Kurukshetra University campus during the year 2003. International experts on pilgrimage tourism and protected sites’ excavations in India would participate. Another proposal was to establish a tourist information bureau at the Parakeet Tourist Complex. The proposed bureau would have internet connectivity with all such bureaus in India and abroad to share and exchange tourism-related information. As a first step to develop Kurukshetra as a heritage city, the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) had already taken up restoration of the Nabha House Building at the banks of Sannehit sarovar. The Haryana Tourism would open an ethnic shopping enclave here. Besides, Purshotampura Bagh and Draupadi Roop Gardens and Brahm Sarovar were proposed to be developed at a cost of Rs 80 lakh. Musical fountains along with facade illumination would be installed here. In order to develop the area around the historic city of Thanesar and the Thanesar mound, a project costing Rs 3.20 crore was already available for developing it as Bharat Darshan Theme Park. The project was likely to be completed by December, 2002. A library named after Dara Sikoh would also be opened here. The ASI had already started work to develop Harshavardhan Park at a cost of Rs 43 lakh. The Haryana Finance Minister presided over a function of songs and dances here today. The crowd was thin. The minister did not stay long. Marriages of 60 couples were solemnised according to Hindu, Sikh and Muslim rites as pat of the utsav here last evening. The Haryana Governor, Babu Parmanand, was the chief guest. |
Haryana to get gunny bags from pvt suppliers Chandigarh, December 13 While the decision to purchase bags worth Rs 250 crore from private agencies has raised many an eyebrow, an official from the Chief Minister’s Office justified the decision, saying that the main objective for asking private parties to supply the bags was to ensure a good quality. It was learnt that at a meeting held here last evening attended, among others, by Chief Minister Om Prakash Chautala, seven private manufacturers were given contracts for supplying gunny bags. One central government agency, PEC Ltd, also obtained a contract, thus taking the total number of firms which would supply bags to the state government to eight. Official sources said the suppliers would provide the bags at a rate which would Re 1.01 below the rate of the DGSD for each bale (one bales contains 400 bags of 50 kg capacity each). Moreover, the suppliers would also deposit 7 per cent of the value of the contracts obtained by them with the government as security. While 5 per cent of the security deposit would have to be given by them to the state government now, the remaining 2 per cent would be adjusted against the payments to be made to them after the receipt of each consignment. The deposits would be reimbursed to the firms after the fulfilment of the terms of contract. Last evening’s meeting took place after the government for a second time invited tenders from private manufacturers, cooperative societies and government agencies for supplying bags for wheat procurement. A similar advertisement issued earlier had failed to get any response from suppliers following a letter from the Jute Commissioner saying that the cost of the bags would be reimbursed to the state government by the Centre only if the jute used for manufacturing the bags was purchased by paying the MSP of jute announced by the Centre. This time the state government, however, plugged that lacuna in its advertisement which mentioned that the raw material for the bags must be obtained by paying the MSP. Knowledgeable sources, however, pointed out that the decision would not help the state government save any money for obtaining the bags at a price lower than what was being offered by the DGSD. As it is the FCI which will reimburse the cost to the state, the state will not gain anything from the deal”, the sources said. |
Invest in J&K for peace: Mufti Faridabad, December 13 Addressing a function here after inaugurating the 450th branch of Jammu and Kashmir Bank today, Mr Sayeed claimed that the process of healing touch had started, adding that the turmoil at present was psychological in nature. He said a ‘consensus’ at the national level should be developed to address the problems of the Kashmiris. Mr Sayeed said the Prime Minister had assured speedy work on various railway projects in Jammu and Kashmir. He said while the project of linking Udhampur to Jammu through rail link was taken up in 1983, the authorities concerned had told him that it would be completed by 2004. He said the project of laying railway track between Jammu and Srinagar had been slated for 2007. Mr Sayeed said any investment in Jammu and Kashmir was an investment in peace. Announcing that his government had decided to build amusement parks at Gulmarg, Pahalgam and Patnitop, he said tourism infrastructure was quite important for the state’s economy. He said tourism spots in and around one Vaishno Devi shrine would be developed in due course. He appealed to the Jammu and Kashmir Bank officials and other institutions to invest in the state. Earlier, the Chairman of Jammu and Kashmir Bank said the branch opened today was fully computerised with a round-the-clock ATM service. Mr Mangat Ram Sharma, Deputy Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir was also present on the occasion. |
