Temple move intended to confuse
SCs: VP New Delhi, October 3 “When they (BJP) saw the strength of the oppressed section of the Hindu society, which was coming up for justice and equal rights (after the implementation of the report), they used religion to confuse them and history is a testimony to such attempts,” Mr V.P. Singh said. He was deposing before the Justice Liberhan Commission, which is probing into the sequences that led to the demolition of the disputed site in Ayodhya. “Finally, the temple movement was an attempt to maintain the oppressive status quo of the present caste system which keeps the Hindu society deeply divided,” he submitted. Describing the demolition as a turning point in the history of India, former Prime Minister said it had a dangerous psychological impact on the Muslim youth which could be exploited by anti-national forces and that he had pleaded with Muslim leaders to stop the youth from taking the confrontationist path. Giving details about the events that led to the implementation of the report, he said there was strong support for the report in Indian politics. |

The exercise will consist of several phases. During the training portion the forces will conduct ground training and equipment familiarisation and day and night jumps. Forces will also conduct an airborne mission in which the Indian pathfinders and scouts will jump along with US scouts and platoons. They will also jump from an IL-76. Salem faces 71 cases in India New Delhi, October 3 The Delhi police has dug out cases as old as that of 1998 in which the name of Abu Salem had figured for the first time in a case where a man wanted to settle his property dispute with his brother. The case against Abu Salem was registered on August 25, 1998, at Lajpat Nagar when a man allegedly approached controversial politician Romesh Sharma for settling his dispute with his brother. The police claimed that Romesh Sharma had in turn sought help of Abu Salem in settling the dispute. The police procured a non-bailable warrant against Abu Salem in a case of alleged extortion when three persons — C.P. Rai, Ishtiaq and Sadiq — were arrested. A Delhi court on October 1 issued a non-bailable warrant against Abu Salem for allegedly running an organised crime syndicate for extorting money from businessmen in the Capital. The court also allowed the police to take help of the CBI in extraditing the gangster from Portugal.

Jogi unveils plan to promote tourism New Delhi, October 3 The State Tourism Board with the backing of the state government has worked out special packages with the view to promoting the remote tribal areas of Chhattisgarh for tourism, specially for foreign tourists. Not only is the board trying to sell the thick forests of Chhattisgarh to the foreign tourists, but also the Chitrakote Waterfalls, which are the biggest in the country. The focus, however, will be on Bastar which continues to remain one of the most backward regions of the world. Mr Jogi addressing the media here today said the state government had decided to accord industry status to tourism to promote the rich cultural heritage and the abundant natural beauty as the unique selling point of Chhattisgarh. He said there was probably no other place in the country or the world where “some tribal people of the state still live in the stone age while people like me are living in the 21st century,” As an effort to bring Chhattisgarh on the world tourism map, the state had worked out six to eight days of travel package comprising Bastar unveiled, royal and tribal experience and Bastar’s Dasehra extravaganza as their theme. The board planned to provide accommodation in Royal Tents as part of the proposal. State Tourism Board chief Dr A Jayathilak said, “The first issue that we will need to address through our communication is the total lack of awareness of where Chhattisgarh is. Therefore, the initial phase of our activity will focus on providing information on the state and what it can offer the tourist. The board has identified Bastar as the first destination to be promoted. Interestingly, Bastar is the largest district in India and is a veritable ‘living museum’, a ‘tribal planet’. In addition to tribal tourism and Bastar’s festivals, the Board would focus on its handicrafts as well as eco-tourism and adventure tourism. |
