Mamata to snap
ties with NDA Kolkata, October 1 The decision to quit the NDA will be formally announced by Ms Banerjee in a day or two. The Trinamool Congress, however, will support the Prime Minister, Mr Atal Behari Vajpayee, from outside on all national issues meant for the real interest of the people and the country. The Hajipur railway with the inclusion of Dhanbad and Moghul Sarai divisions of Eastern Railway became operational today. The half-a-century-old bifurcated Eastern Railway has been left only with Sealdah, Howrah and Asansol divisions. The Railway Minister, Mr Nitish Kumar declared the opening of the Hajipur zone at a function there. The Trinamool Congress observed “dhikkar dibash” here against the bifurcation. The CPM and other Left parties and the Congress held demonstrations in front of the Fairle Place and Sealdah and Howrah stations. Talking to reporters, Ms Mamata Banerjee regretted that despite her all out protests and objections, the Vajpayee government had yielded to the political blackmail of the Samata Party and cleared the bifurcation of the Eastern Railway. Though Ms Banerjee, so far, has not made any statement on their future relations with the Vajpayee government, Mr Sudip Bandopadhyya, said at this stage, there could be no rethinking on their future relations with the NDA but to stay out. Ms Mamata Banerjee held a rally at Dhanbad on Saturday at the invitation of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha leader, Mr Sibu Soren, where she declared to fight jointly in future with the JMM for the interest of the people of both Bengal and Jharkhand. Mr Soren said they would still oppose Dhanbad, now part of Jharkhand, to be included in the Hazipur zone. They would demand for a new zone with its headquarters at
Ranchi. |

Sharon, Bush, Vajpayee told
New Delhi, October 1 Addressing mediapersons, VHP international general secretary Pravin Bhai Togadiya said, “to fight the menace of terrorism we need “Ariel Sharon, George Bush or Chatrapati
Shivaji”. Without taking names, Dr Togadiya continued his barbs against the BJP and its leaders saying that the country needs leaders who can wage a relentless battle against terrorism from Attok to
Cuttack, drive out three crores of illegal immigrants and facilitate the construction of Ram temple in
Ayodhya. When asked to identify such a leader who could perform the task, the VHP leader avoided giving a direct reply and said the country would produce such leaders. Dr Togadiya sought to bury the controversy over VHP working president Ashok Singhal’s disparaging remarks about Mr Vajpayee, saying that “if a person who is not only a supporter but an ardent supporter for many decades expresses a concern then it should be a cause of introspection”. The VHP leader went on to say that if the government failed to impose an immediate ban on the vast network of madrasas of Deoband school and Tableegh Jamaat and Ahil-e-Hadis then the country would throw up “Narendra
Modis” every where. Stating that the country was being taken in the direction of a “civil war” by the pseudo-secular political parties who were protecting the activities of Islamic
jehadis, Dr Togadiya said the madrasas were a potential security threat to the country. Specifying conditions for Muslims to be able to co-exist in the country, Dr Togadiya asked the Muslim society and Muslim leadership to come forward by abandoning the concept of Darul Islam versus Darul
Harb, Kafir versus Mummin and jehad versus peaceful coexistence. It is a folly to address only superficial issues like jehad in Kashmir and attack on
Akshardham, but we have address and respond ideological religious forces behind the attack, Dr Togadiya said, adding that “we have to address global Islamic fundamentalism, pan-Indian
Talibanisation, role of madrasas, concept of Darul Islam, kafir and
jehad. |
Cong-ruled states to set up family courts New Delhi, October 1 Speaking at the conclusion of the Mahila Shaktikaran Adhiveshan organised by the AICC here, Mrs Gandhi read out the party’s 10-point agenda which would be implemented in the 14 states where the Congress has governments. She said a meeting of Congress Chief Ministers would be convened in November in this connection. The Congress would press for constitutional amendment to reserve one-third seats in the Lok Sabha and in Vidhan Sabhas for women. The party pledged to launch a movement for the implementation of various social legislations, empower village women to assume responsibility for development schemes and focus on the special needs of female agricultural labour and women cultivators. The Congress would take measures to enable full participation of women in government and judiciary and launch a special campaign to increase equal work opportunities for women especially among primary school teachers and local administration. Earlier, inaugurating the conference, Mrs Gandhi said women’s empowerment should be given the shape of a people’s movement. Several women leaders spoke at the
conference, which was attended by Mahila Congress workers from all parts of the country. |
Akshardham
to be opened after shradh Gandhinagar, October 1 Unaware of the sudden change of decision by the Bochasanwasi Akshar Purushottam Sanstha (BAPS), several tourists turned up at Gate number 1 in the forenoon to find a notice announcing that the temple would be reopened on October 7 after shradh. The terrorist attack has increased public curiosity. Several persons visiting Ahmedabad and nearby areas are extending their journey to visit the 23-acre complex. Mr R.D. Mokashi, a Mumbai based architect who had come to Ahmedabad with his son, was one of the visitors who read the notice. “I came to Ahmedabad yesterday where my son had to take the GRE test. We decided to visit Akshardham. We are boarding the train back to Mumbai today and are disappointed that we will not be able to see the monument,” he said. Mr Bhagwan Das Kalyani, a shopkeeper from Nagpur, who took a train journey of 957-km to see the monument and had booked his ticket for return journey on Thursday, said the BAPS should have intimated the public. Mrs Kamla Panpalya from Pali district in Rajasthan had come to Ahmedabad with her husband for medical consultation and decided to see Akshardham after reading news reports that it would be opened on Tuesday. “We were supposed to return by Jammu-Tawi today but got our tickets cancelled. After making these efforts, we are upset that we will not be able to see Akshardham.” Mr Vikas Dangi, a software programmer from Mumbai, said he had come to meet Acharya Shri Mahapragya at Koba Jain Temple, 12 km from Akshardham with his cousin. “We decided to visit Akshardham also and are
disappointed that we will not be able to see it” he said. Nisheeth Acharya, a visibly exhausted administration assistant credited with alerting volunteers on telecom at the time of the attack, told TNS that the saints, mahants and volunteers were so preoccupied with attending to visitors and restoring normalcy that shradh did not cross their mind. The Hari Mandapam where the seven-foot gold-leafed idol of Lord Swaminarayan is placed was decorated with marigold garlands, indicating that the volunteers were ready to receive visitors. The SP, Gandhinagar, Mr Brahmbhat, said one company of the CRPF comprising 90 personnel had been deployed on the Akshardham premises. Besides, 20 men of Gandhinagar police had been sent to the premises to assist the CRPF. He said security had been strengthened at all temples including the Jain Temple and Prekahsa Bharti Temple in Koba and Vaishno Devi Temple on the Sarkhej highway between Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar. Security had also been tightened at key installations including the secretariat and the Chief Minister’s residence. |

Mumbai, October 1 “The test has ascertained traces of alcohol in the blood that were beyond the permissible limits”, Joint Commissioner of Police (law and order) Javed Ahmed, who is probing the case, said here. However, he refused to disclose the exact percentage of the alcohol detected in the blood. Interestingly, the actor, in a statement to the police, had denied that he had consumed alcohol on the ill-fated day. Salman had reportedly been partying whole night at a popular night spot before the incident. He had allegedly stopped again at another hotel to meet a friend where he consumed a couple of drinks for the second time.
