Diabetes Mela at Talkatora Garden
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, September 26
A three-day Diabetes Mela will begin in the Capital tomorrow to create awareness about diabetes, which has assumed epidemic proportions in the country with about one crore people suffering from it.

The mela, being organised by the Delhi Diabetes Research Centre (DDRC) at the Talkatora Garden here, will be inaugurated by the Delhi Transport, Tourism and Power Minister, Mr Ajay Maken.

Apart from providing the necessary details about the disease to visitors the mela will also showcase the ‘diabetes pump’, the latest technology developed by a South Korean company for regular supply of insulin to patients.

The pump, which would be introduced in the country the first time, provides effective respite to patients who have to take a regular dose of insulin.

The President of the DDRC, Dr R. C. Jhingan said that with the threat of India becoming the diabetes capital of the world by 2020, introduction of technologies like the insulin pumps could help decisively in the battle against this disease. People suffering from Type I diabetes, especially children, would benefit tremendously from the pump, as it would give a regular supply of insulin depending upon the requirement of the patients. Experts from various branches of medicine are expected to check the visitors apart from delivering lectures, demonstrations and holding discussions on the latest developments and their applications in the field of prevention and cure of diabetes.

Number of lepers in Ghaziabad declines
Our Correspondent

Ghaziabad, September 26
The number of lepers in the district has gone down by one per cent. As against three lepers among every 10,000 people last year, it has now come down 2.08 this year.

However, in the Sambhawali and Garh areas, more cases of leprosy have been noticed. There were 706 persons afflicted by leprosy up to August 31 out of which 700 are under medication, says the District Leprosy Officer, Dr S. K. Singh.

The authorities said that the number of leprosy patients in the district last year was 999. Dr Singh said that the World Health Organisation had fixed a target of bringing down the percentage of lepers to one or even less for every 10,000 persons by 2004.

Agra and Muzzafarnagar had already achieved this target in UP and Ghaziabad was likely to achieve it soon, he said.

Dr Singh said leprosy was of two types -- contagious and non-contagious. Those suffering from contagious leprosy have to remain on STD medication for one year while the non-contagious patients for six months. STD was known to kill 99.9 per cent bacteria of leprosy, he added.

The District Leprosy Officer said that there was no precaution to prevent the disease. Leprosy was found more in areas near rivers and sea coasts and places having uniform temperature. “In Ghaziabad district also, we find comparatively more lepers in Garh and Sambhawali areas," he added.
