Number of lepers in Ghaziabad declines Ghaziabad, September 26 However, in the Sambhawali and Garh areas, more cases of leprosy have been noticed. There were 706 persons afflicted by leprosy up to August 31 out of which 700 are under medication, says the District Leprosy Officer, Dr S. K. Singh. The authorities said that the number of leprosy patients in the district last year was 999. Dr Singh said that the World Health Organisation had fixed a target of bringing down the percentage of lepers to one or even less for every 10,000 persons by 2004. Agra and Muzzafarnagar had already achieved this target in UP and Ghaziabad was likely to achieve it soon, he said. Dr Singh said leprosy was of two types -- contagious and non-contagious. Those suffering from contagious leprosy have to remain on STD medication for one year while the non-contagious patients for six months. STD was known to kill 99.9 per cent bacteria of leprosy, he added. The District Leprosy Officer said that there was no precaution to prevent the disease. Leprosy was found more in areas near rivers and sea coasts and places having uniform temperature. “In Ghaziabad district also, we find comparatively more lepers in Garh and Sambhawali areas," he added. |
