Postmodern denigration of aesthetics
M. L. Raina

The Troubles with Postmodernism
by Stefan Morawski Routledge, London & New York. Pages 152. $ 80

M
Y only cavil against this eye-opening monograph is that it does not come with a statutory warning: ‘persons with the postmodern condition must not read it.’ I say this because the postmodern condition (Lyotard’s phrase accepted by Morawski) has now assumed the nature of a syndrome with effects visible on many philosophical and literary disciplines in the West and in our own country.

Staying alive in spite of cancer
Vijay Tankha

The Joy of Cancer
by Anup Kumar. Rupa.
Pages 238. Rs. 195

P
UBLISHER'S blurbs usually overstate. The one on the cover of this book reads, "Anyone whose life has been touched by cancer will find courage, wisdom and inspiration in this book." This claim understates the merits of Anup Kumar’s first-person account of his sudden plunge into the alien world of a cancer patient.

Federalism in Indian politics
Ashutosh Kumar

Federalism Without a Centre: The Impact of Political and Economic Reform on India’s Federal System
by Lawrence Saez. Sage Publications, New Delhi,
Rs 440.

F
EDERALISM as a formal institution—enshrined in the Indian Constitution—has remained the most distinctive feature of the Indian polity as well as a subject of intense debate. The introduction to new economic policies (NEP) has given a whole new dimension to the debate about ‘the optimal level’ of centralisation and decentralisation in the Indian polity.

Learning to live positively

M. L. Sharma
21 Laws of Positive Living
by Rakesh K. Mittal. Sterling Publishers Pvt. Ltd, New Delhi. Pages IX+129. Rs 90.

THE book under review is Mittal’s fourth book on the most useful subject of positive living, wherein he has dealt extensively with all the significant laws in the manner Dr Norman Vincent Peale has touched on the same theme with a masterly stroke. Despite this, Mittal has his own unique way of presenting these laws in a delightful manner.

Essays that can aid policy-makers
Jai Narain Sharma
Effects of Globalization on Industry and Environment;
edited by Rajat Acharyya and Bhaswar Moitra. Lancer’s Books, New Delhi. Pages 316. Rs 595.

FROM everyday considerations, such as which restaurant to dine in or which store to shop at, to more substantial concerns, such as which technology to adopt or which research project to undertake, decision-making is susceptible to social influences which may lead individuals to do what others are doing, irrespective of their own private experiences or preferences.

A volume overburdened with data
Arun Gaur
Ootacamund: A History
by Frederick Price Rupa & Co, Pages 589, Rs 295.

IN this era of post-colonial criticism, the temptation to consider this bulky book as an expression, nay, an allegory of a colonial hegemonic dream is very strong. And though a 100-year-old resuscitated work (this book was first published in 1908) is worthy of being evaluated in its own right as a piece of period literature, the temptation of looking at it through a colonial paradigm is not without foundation in the present case.

Mapping the future of geography
N.K. Oberoi
Voice of Concern
by Anu Kapur, National Association of Geographers, India and Concept Publishing Company, New Delhi, 2002, Pages 428, Rs 995.

KNOWLEDGE institutionalised in the form of courses at university and college level suffers from inertia and a fair amount of conservatism. Due to lack of initiative and inventiveness within the ‘fossilised’ academia, many disciplines are on the verge of extinction.

N the recent years many Punjabi writers have had foreign jaunts courtesy World Punjabi Conferences in different countries. Whenever writers travel abroad, they are tempted to write about their experiences over there.

Short takes
Kasauli as seen through the eyes of a resident
Jaswant Singh

Kasauli — Pines, Wines and Old Times
by Ankur Bansal Sagar Publications, Kasauli. Pages 152. Rs 200.

W
HEN the author sat down to write about Kasauli, he obviously decided to begin at the beginning. So he describes the geographical location of the town which covers an area of 676 acres and lies about 6,000 feet above sea-level.
