In a major step towards reforms in the weakened examination system, Panjab University plans to introduce a facility where students will be allowed to see the answersheets after the final evaluation during the annual examination.

Plenty technical, craft courses to choose from

The city has a large number of post-matriculation technical and craft courses to offer. The city has two polytechnic, one only for women. There is also an Industrial Training Institute, which is offering more than 28 courses to the students, and a crafts institute, again only for women.

Private blood bank from July

The first private blood bank of the region is coming up at Silver Oaks Hospital in SAS Nagar. According to Dr Manjari Bhargava, Director of the institution, the blood bank will be operational from the first week of July.

The city police proposes to ask the administration for framing a policy of registering private computer training institutes that have mushroomed in the city during the past two years.

The district registered a pass percentage of 41.56 in the Class X examination of the Haryana Board of School Education against the state pass percentage of 50.31, according to the result declared here today.

MC House meeting test for Mayor

Jacob for drive against drug abuse

1.25 lakh stolen from shop
Chandigarh, June 26
Unknown miscreants allegedly decamped with Rs 1.25 lakh after breaking open the cash box in a paints shop yesterday night. This is the third such incident in the Sector 18 market this year.

Haryana staffer robbed
Panchkula, June 26
Two motorcycle-borne youths snatched a bag containing Rs 31,480 from an employee of the Haryana Excise and Taxation Department here today. According to sources, Som Nath was carrying the money in a plastic bag collected from a collection centre located at T-point on the Mansa Devi-Panchkula road to deposit it in State Bank of Patiala, Sector 7, around 10.30 am.

Youth’s body found

The body of a 20-year-old youth was found under mysterious circumstances near the Sarangpur barrier early in the morning. Sarabjit Singh, milkman, was found lying dead and his bicycle was also found lying on the side.

The Sohana police today booked a doctor for allegedly raping a married woman of Kandla village at a medical camp held at Chuanhedi village, near here.

DC’s house burgled
Chandigarh, June 26
The Sector 11 house of the Panchkula Deputy Commissioner, Ms. Jyoti Arora, was burgled last night. The IAS couple is presently residing in Panchkula. Though the exact loss could not be ascertained till the filing of the report, the police had registered a case under Sections 457 and 380 of the IPC.

British Library’s IT centre inaugurated

Students today ‘gheraoed’ the office of the Dean, Students Welfare today protesting against his alleged partisan role in the recent controversy where the stay of a former president of the Students Council in the faculty house with his wife was termed ‘illegal’.

POST-MORTEM OF AIDS VICTIMS
Probe begins into PGI’s refusal
Chandigarh, June 26
The Union Health Ministry has initiated an inquiry into the PGI’s refusal to conduct post-mortem examination of the bodies of AIDS patients. According to sources, a team consisting of four specialists from the Union Health Ministry reached the PGI today and met senior doctors and officials, including the Medical Superintendent of the Hospital and Heads of Departments of Histopathology and Forensic Sciences in this regard. 

Heart surgeon under scrutiny

The PGI Administration is collecting all information related to the Cardio-thoracic Department which will soon be handed over to the CBI. These files are regarding surgeries performed by some heart surgeons in the past.

A large number of residents of Sectors 15, 23 and 24 today opposed the move of the Chandigarh Administration to set up a TB hospital in place of an ayurvedic dispensary in Sector 24.

Girdhari, Jitender win carrom title

Girdhari Lal and Jitender Kalra clinched the men’s singles and women’s singles title, respectively, by overpowering their respective opponents, Rajinder Singh and Kamlesh Arora, in a thrilling finish at 13-09 and 9-6 in the Ist Markfed Carrom Tournament which concluded at the Markfed complex, here today.

DAV School selected for NSTC scheme

Appeal for smooth conduct of House

If the meeting of the MC House scheduled for tomorrow does not take up various important agenda items pertaining to the development of the city, the city Mayor, Mr Raj Kumar Goyal, should tender his resignation and the UT Administrator should dissolve the House and call for fresh elections.

Mayor can now use red light
Chandigarh June 26
The city Mayor, who, as per protocol, is placed just after the UT Administrator, will now have permission to use a red light atop his official car. This comes almost 4 years after the issue was mooted that officials who are lower in protocol than the Mayor use the red lights while the Mayor is not entitled to the same.

100 Govt Press workers to be shifted

About 100 employees of the Printing and Stationery Department posted in the Government Press have been identified to be shifted to other departments of the Chandigarh Administration.
