PUNJAB

ABOHAR
ARRESTED: The police on Monday arrested Ved Parkash, former sarpanch of Shergarh village, under Section 307, IPC, and 25, 27 and 54 of the Arms Act for shooting at Mr Mohan Lal, member of Waryamkhera panchayat. There was reported to be a dispute between them.

AHMEDGARH
RALLY: The local unit of Technical Services Union held a rally at 66 Kv grid. Rally condemned the alleged adamant role of the PSEB management regarding transfer policy and demanded immediate action to stop victimisation. Trade Union leaders Mr Hakam Singh, Mr Sukhcharan Singh, Mr Narang Singh, Avtar Singh and Rajvir Singh were among others who addressed the rally.

AMLOH
FREE MEDICAL CAMP: A camp of nature cure through aquapressure thereby without administering doses of medicines to the patients was organised here on Monday. On the first day, a team consisting of six doctors examined 120 patients which included 115 women and 15 men, while the strength rose upto 200 on Tuesday. When contacted Mr Tejinder Nath, in charge of the team, he said the camp will continue upto July 5 next month. Mr Nath disclosed that about 40 per cent patients are recovered through this system.

BARNALA
ANNUAL FUNCTION : The Lions Club District 321 F will take up issues like diabetes, traffic awarerness and world service and welfare during 2001-2002. This information was given by Lion D.K. Sood, district governor of Lions Club 321 F while presiding over the annual prize distribution function of the local Lions Club on Sunday.

BATHINDA
MEDICAL CAMP: A medical camp was organised at Khirkiyan village in Muktsar district on Sunday in which 460 patients were examined by doctors from Desh Bhagat Dental College of the district.

MAGNETIC THERAPY: A magnetic therapy camp was organised by the Dost Welfare Society at the local Ganesha Basti here on Sunday. About 200 patients were examined. A social organisation of Nagpur provided medical assistance.

MEETING HELD: A meeting of the Sarb Hind Youth Akali Dal (SHSAD) was held here on Monday under the presidentship of Mr Hartej Singh Mehta, district president of the party. He said the national president, Mr Karnail Singh Panjoli, would participate in a meeting of the district unit to be held next month.

RALLY CANCELLED: A district-level rally of the Shiromani Akali Dal to be held on July 11 at Rampura Phul has been cancelled as a mark of respect to the late Mr Balbir Singh, MLA, Nathana, who died on June 24. This was stated in a press note here on Monday by Mr Babu Singh, general secretary of the district unit of the party.

FATEHGARH SAHIB
CRITICISED: The Arhtiya Association, Sirhind, has criticised those persons who had tried to mislead the public commission agents as well as the Akali leadership by declaring certain commission agents as office-bearers of Arhtiya Association, Sirhind, in an advertisement published in a Punjabi daily in honour of Mr Parkash Singh Badal for his visit to the district. The commission agents alleged that just to please the Chief Minister, the so-called leaders had tried to create a rift and chaos in the Arhtiya Association by declaring new office-bearers in the advertisement.

GURDASPUR
SUICIDE: Sunita, wife of BSF constable Sarwan, allegedly committed suicide by jumping before a train here on Sunday. She was reported to be suffering from depression.

WATER LOGGING: Resentment prevails among farmers of 12 villages against government’s failure to solve problem of water-logging in more than 500 acres of Gazikot, Chander Bhan, Rasulpur, Karal, Kotli Sainian Naushera, Nawanpind Bahadur, Chawa and Nangal villages. Mr Partap Singh Bajwa, vice-president, PPCC, has demanded immediate action in the matter to save the farmers from the menace of water logging.

JAGRAON
MURDER MYSTERY: Saroj Rani and her husband Mohan Lal of Ludhiana, who were arrested on the suspicion of murdering Ms Surinder Kaur (55), a resident of Janakpuri, Ludhiana, whose body was found at the enbankment of Sidhwan Canal on the morning of June 15, have been set free. Inspite of intense interrogation, the police had drawn blank from the couple, and applied in the court of Mr Hari Singh Grewal, JMIC, Jagraon, for setting them free. The Magistrate had ordered the couple to furnish an undertaking to appear in the court as and when called, or to file a personal bond or surety bond of Rs 25,000.

TRAINING CAMP: A free training camp of Tae Kawandoe, a self defence technique, organised at SKN Model High School, Tilak Nagar, concluded here on Monday. Mr Kamal Kishore Kanojia, coach, taught the students about the novel technique. Mr K.D. Arora, Principal, encouraged the students to keep practising the technique.

CAMP: A team of rifle shooters from the Master Tara Singh Memorial College for Women participated in a training camp organised by the Weapon Training School at Ahmedabad. All the students received ‘A’ grade certificates. Mr Surjan Singh of the college management and Ms Gurpreet Kaur, coach, appreciated the efforts of the students.

MISHAP: A private bus of Madpur Transport (PB-10Q-9933) hit an octroi post at the Samrala chowk. The driver of the bus received serious injuries and was immediately taken to Ludhiana. Three women passengers also received injuries, and have been admitted to the local Civil Hospital. The employees on duty at the octroi post, Sadhu Ram, Jaswant Singh and Ram Chand, also received minor injuries.

DISPUTE SOLVED: The dispute of truck operators in Samrala have been solved on Tuesday and now the new truck union under the name of Dashmesh Truck Union, Samrala, is formed, according to Mr Teja Singh. Five members, Mohinder Singh, Satpal Singh, Karamjit Singh, Balbir Singh and Teja Singh, will look after the interests of the truck union. As per new resolution of truck union, the fine of Rs 50,000 will be imposed who will carry the goods without queue (number) and the new owner who wishes to become a member, the security of Rs 21,000 will have to be deposited by him, he added.

MEETING POSTPONED: The meeting for the election of vice-president of the nagar council, which was fixed for June 27, is postponed. This meeting was fixed four times during past three years but had always been postponed due to some unavoidable reasons.

KHARAR
POWER SHUTDOWN: The supply of electricity to Kharar and the surrounding areas will remain suspended on Wednesday from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m., according to Mr Gursharanjit Singh, SDO, Kharar.

LUDHIANA
APPOINTED: The Shiv Sena (Bal Thakre) has appointed party observers to strengthen the organisational set up in the state. According to Mr Pawan Kumar Gupta, state president of the party, Mr Pawan Sharma, Press Secretary has been appointed party observer for Amritsar and Moga districts.

YC UNITS: In the wake of forthcoming assembly elections in Punjab, the Punjab Youth Congress (PYC) has launched a campaign to set up party units at village-level. As a part of the campaign, the PYC vice-president, Mr Sukhwant Singh Dugri, has constituted a 41-member YC unit at Dugri village on the periphery of the city. Speaking at the occasion, Mr Dugri exhorted the party members to mobilise the members of public in support of Congress and propagate policies and programmes of the party so that the misrule of SAD-BJP government could be brought to an end. Mr Jagroop Singh Gill (Vicky) and Mr Jaswant Singh Badesha will be the chairman and president of the Dugri unit respectively while Mr Amardeep Singh Sodhi will be the chief advisor. Other office bearers are: Mr Parmel Singh Gill, Mr Balwinder Singh Matharoo — Deputy Chairmen; Mr Harpreet Singh, Mr Jatinder Singh Gill and Mr Onkar Singh — vice-presidents; Mr Baldev Singh Badesha, Mr Pawandeep Singh Gill, Mr Hardeep Singh Deepa and Mr Gurpreet Singh Gill — general secretaries; and Mr Gurminder Singh Jawanda, Mr Gurpreet Singh, Mr Tejinderpal Singh Matharoo, Mr Jagtar Singh, Mr Jagjit Singh Gill and Mr Tejinderpal Singh Teji — secretaries. In addition, a 23 member executive committee has also been nominated.

CONFERENCE: The Shiromani Akali Dal activist Mr Sharanjit Singh Dhillon, in charge, Ludhiana Rural Assembly segment, has claimed that there was massive response from the masses for the district-level party conference, to be held at Alamgir on July 2. Mr Dhillon, who had just concluded a whirlwind tour of several villages in the area, including Rode, Sarhali, Gadapur, Meharban, Prem Colony, Khwajke, Sirha, Bajra, Mangat, Jamalpur and Kuliewal, claimed that the conference would prove to be a historic event. Mr Parkash Singh Badal, Chief Minister, his cabinet colleagues and many other senior central leaders will participate in the conference. Others accompanying Mr Dhillon on the tour of villages were Mr Avtar Singh Makkar, vice-president, District Akali Jatha, Mr Harbhajan Singh Rode, Mr Ajit Singh Batra, Baba Ajit Singh, Mr Harbhajan Singh Dang, Mr Ravinder Pal Singh Khalsa, Mr Jatinder Singh Tinku and Mr Gurnam Singh, sarpanch.

MALERKOTLA
ELECTROCUTED: Rajesh Kumar, an operator at tubewell no 3 of the Municipal Council, Ahmedgarh, was electrocuted while operating the tubewell on Sunday. A case has been registered.

MANSA
INDEFINITE FAST: The police on Tuesday took away Mr Baldev Singh Gurne and Ms Bant Kaur, workers of the Budhlada Cooperative Sugar Mill, who have been on indefinite fast since June 16. The employees of the mill have been demanding that the mill should be restarted and their wages for 54 months be released.

PATIALA
DISTRIBUTED: Mr Manjit Singh Narang, SDM, distributed cheques worth Rs 39 lakh among zimidars as a compensation for the paddy sold at less amount last year at the Sanaur mandi here on Tuesday. While presiding over the function, Mr Harbans Singh Lang, Chairman, Market Committee, said the farmers must be careful while selling their crop in the market. He asked them to collect their receipts in exchange of the crop sold in the market. The function was jointly held by the Market Committee, Patiala, the District Food Supply Controller, and the Block Development and Panchayat Officer, Sanaur.

INSPECTION: The development work being undertaken in the historic Kali Devi Mandir will be completed by the end of July and Rs 50 lakh is being spent on it to beautify the area. This was stated by Mr Jasbir Singh Bir, Deputy Commissioner, while presiding over the meeting with different authorities here on Tuesday. He said the construction work of the tank of the mandir would be finished soon. Mr Bir also asked the authorities to view the cleaning work from Dukhniwaran Sahib to Leela Bhawan and the way leading to the Phowara chowk. He said various development projects would also be initiated to ensure that the historic Baradari Garden also regains its lost glory.

PHAGWARA
COMPENSATION: The District Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum, Kapurthala, has directed the DET, Kapurathala, and the General Manager, Telecom , Jalandhar, to provide complainant Susheel Kumar Gaur with a telephone connection, pay Rs 1,000 as compensation against mental harassment and Rs 1,000 as costs. The judgement was delivered by Mr M.L.Puri and Ms Prem N.Kumar, president and member, respectively , of the forum.

LOOTED: Three robbers looted Rs 60,000 from Amardip Singh at gunpoint near Apra village in this subdivision on Monday.

FAULTY PHONES: As many as 250 telephones of Sector 17-B went out of service after underground cable feeding the area has been damaged near Jagat Cinema due to digging by HFCL. According to the Area Manager (North) of the local BSNL office, efforts were on to restore the services.

WORKSHOP: The Surya Foundation and the Citizens Awareness Group, in collaboration with the State AIDS Control Society, Chandigarh, organised a workshop on HIV\AIDS in the Government Dispensary, Sector 20, here on Tuesday for roadside barbers and hair dressers. As many as 123 hair dressers and barbers from Sectors 22, 23, 20, 30, Industrial Area and Dadu Majra Colony attended the workshop. Among others who were present at the workshop included Dr Ramneek Sharma, (founder director of the foundations), and Mr Surinder Verma, (Chairman, Citizens, Awareness Group).

INCOME TAX CAMP: The Tribune Employees Union will hold its 10th annual income tax camp on The Tribune premises on Wednesday. Mr Ashwini Luthra, Commissioner of Income Tax, Chandigarh, will inaugurate the camp at 10 a.m.

BAHUJAN SAMAJ FRONT: Students of Panjab University on Tuesday announced the formation of the Bahujan Samaj Front. The following have been elected office-bearers of the BSF: chairman — Samarjeet Singh Saniara; president — Harpreet Singh Bhatti; general secretary — Dr Balwant Singh; and joint secretary — Rinkle Kamboj.

SAS NAGAR
SUMMER WORKSHOP: As many as 75 children participated in a month-long summer workshop which concluded at Shemrock School here. During the workshop, children from three to 11 years of age learnt dancing, art and craft and dramatics. The participants also exhibited their creations at the school.

MUDDY WATER: The House Owners Welfare Association, Phase I on Tuesday complained of muddy water supply in the early hours almost daily. Mr P.S. Virdi, President of the association said a sample of muddy water was shown to the Executive Engineer (Public Health) on Tuesday.

AMBALA
TRADERS’ PLEA: Traders of Ambala Cantonment have urged the nationalised banks to start ATM service. The Ambala Cantt Traders Federation has sought the ATM service facility so that they can draw amount round the clock for their day-to-day needs during odd hours. “A number of times, the deputation of the federation has met bank officials but the request has not been met so far. It is demanded that the ATM should be installed at the earliest,” a press note of the federation stated.

CASE REGISTERED: The Mulana police has registered a case against a youth for making an attempt to rape a minor girl. The father of the girl lodged a complaint. He alleged that the youth, Ravinder, took the girl in a room and attempted to rape her.

FUNCTION HELD: A function was held by the Nasha Mukti Kendra and the IOC to mark International Anti-Drugs Day. Speaking on the occasion, Mr Amar Nath Narwal said the menace of drugs was a major concern today. “Drugs lead to early death and we must stop drugs from taking deep root,” he said.

BHIWANI
SUICIDE: Hashim (22) of Bihar allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself here on Monday. The police handed over his body to his relatives after a post-mortem examination.

DAMAGED ELEVATORS: Despite the sanctioning of a hefty amount by the Financial Commissioner and the Secretary, Health Department, the damaged elevators of the local Civil Hospital have not been repaired. According to sources, several letters have been written to the department concerned during the past two years, but nothing has been done so far.

RESENTMENT PREVAILS: Resentment prevails among employees of the Board of School Education, Haryana, against the abolition of district coordination centres by the board. The president of the School Board Employees Union , Mr Rishi Ram Sharma, said nearly 250 employees would be affected by the decision.

HEALTH CAMP: One hundred and fifty diabetic patients were examined at a three-day free medical camp organised by the Parjapati Ishwariya Vishv-Vidyalaya. The camp concluded at the local Brahm Kumari Ashram on Monday. Dr Prem Masand from Mount Abu and Dr Sachin from Mumbai examined the patients.

BILASPUR
HONOURED: Member of Parliament and former state BJP president Suresh Chandel honoured families of Kargil martyrs at Ghumarwin, near here, on Monday. The function was organised by the Nehru Yuva Kendra Sangathan. He donated Rs 1 lakh for a martyrs’ memorial to be raised there.

CHAMBA
PANCHAYAT SAMITI: Mr Ram Charan and Mr Des Raj have been elected chairman and vice-chairman, respectively, of the Panchayat Samiti Pangi, in the district. This was announced by the Subdivisional Magistrate , Pangi, Mr Sandeep Kumar.

PROPOSED: The local Municipal Council proposes to generate financial resources for which a new strategy will be drawn up for enhancing rents of commercial shops and launching a drive for the recovery of rents of the shops, besides putting forward animal, professional and business taxes in the town. Mr S.P. Dhall, president of the council, said this here on Tuesday.

JAISINGHPUR
DHARNA HELD: More than 200 persons from various panchayats, including pardhans and BDC members of this subdivision, held a dharna in front of the office of the subdivisional Magistrate on Tuesday. They were pressing for the acceptance of their demand for appointing doctors, nursing staff, class IV employees, besides providing essential equipment in the local community health centre. Mr Jaswant Rana, Zila Parishad member, led the rally.

KUMARHATTI
WORK STOPPED: The stoppage of work on public toilets at Barog, 4 km from here, has led to resentment among residents of the town. The work was abandoned because of an objection raised by the owner of the nearby Korinns hotel, alleged the residents.

NAHAN
RALLIES HELD: Rallies, competitions and debates were organised at Nahan Rajgarh, Shillai and Sarahan on Tuesday to mark the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking. The SDM’s Mr Rakesh Sharma and Mr SP Rolta flagged off the rallies of schoolchildren carrying placards against drug abuse and illicit trafficking at Moginand and Rajgarh, respectively.

PARWANOO
COMMUNITY POLICING: The local police has decided to launch the community policing programme in the town from July 1. This was disclosed by the DSP while addressing a group of local residents.
