PUNJAB

BATHINDA
CM URGED: Mr Joginder Singh Bhasin, member of state executive of the CPI, urged the Chief Minister, Mr Parkash Singh Badal, on Wednesday, to solve the problems of the town on priority which included sanitation, streetlights, coal ash of the local thermal plant. In a letter to the Chief Minister, Mr Bhasin said the roads in the town required immediate repair.

GURDASPUR
POLIO IMMUNISATION: A rally, attended by a large number of sarpanches and panches in this district, was held on Wednesday at the Primary Health Centre, Ranjitbagh, to create an awareness regarding polio immunisation. Mr Hussan Lal, ADC (General), was the chief guest and Dr S.S. Sohal, Civil Surgeon, presided over.

HOSHIARPUR
APPOINTED: Mr Sanjiv Kalra took over as the new SSP here on Wednesday. Mr Kalra has replaced Mr R.P. Mittal who has been transferred to Chandigarh as SP Vigilance, Punjab.

ARRESTED: Malook Singh, Meher Singh, Jagjiwan Singh, Gurdev Kaur, Surinder Kaur, all residents of Bhawanipur village, were arrested for the murder of Gurdev Singh of the same village. Two other suspects Keher Singh and Bhag Singh are still missing. Gurdev Singh was allegedly assaulted by the aforesaid on December 4 due to which he died later.

JALANDHAR
RACKET BUSTED: A flesh trade racket was busted here on Wednesday with arrest of the six members of the gang under the ongoing drive of the city police against anti-social elements. Those arrested have been identified as Binder, Prem Lata and Sonia of Simlapuri locality in Ludhiana, Harbans Lal of Basi Sheikh, Ravinder Kumar of Ram Nagar and Billa of Basti Nau.

KHANNA
RALLY:
A rally in connection with the pulse polio jagran abhiyan was organised here on Thursday. Dr Dharam Pal, Senior Medical Officer of the local Civil Hospital while addressing the rally said the students had major role in creating awareness about the pulse polio movement. Principal Vinod Kapila of A S Senior Secondary School, Khanna, Dr P D Singla, Dr V K Aggarwal, Dr Iqbal Kaur and Dr Achhar Singh all of Civil Hospital were present.

MACHHIWARA
MEETING HELD: To raise the voice of the physically handicapped, a meeting was held, here, under the presidentship of Mr Manmohan Jargar, assistant secretary of the physically handicapped association, Punjab. Mr Rajinder Singh was nominated as the president of Samrala subdivision at the meeting. It was proposed to organise a state-level conference in the Machhiwara area soon.

HAILED: Cricket lovers in the area, have hailed the decision of the BCCI to impose ban on Azharruddin and several other players on match-fixing charges. They said though the punishment was not severe yet others would learn a lesson from it. Among the cricket lovers were Mr D.L. Jain, Mr Jaswinder Singh Sachdeva, Mr Barinder Singh Vinky, Mr Rupinder Singh Mandi, Mr Paramjit Singh and Mr Davinder Singh.

CAMP ORGANISED: The fifth eye operation camp was organised at PAU, Koomkalan, by the Youth Welfare Club Uppal in collaboration with B.S. Automobiles Kohara, on Wednesday. More than 326 patients were examined at the camp. Forty one patients were operated upon. All patients were given medicines and food free of cost. Among others present during the camp were Dr K.J.S. Kakkar, SMO, Dr D.S. Bhatti, Er Baljinder Singh Uppal and the president of club Mr Kulwant Singh.

MEDICAL CAMP: More than 800 patients were examined at a general medical check-up camp, organised at Kalas Kalan village. The camp was conducted by the International Youth Club Welfare Organisation, with the help of Guru Nanak Nursing Home, Kalas Kalan. The organisation provided medicines free of cost to patients.

SAMMELANS ORGANISED: In order to make the pulse polio, campaign a success, panch-sammelans were organised on the premises of PHU Machhiwara and Koom Kalan, respectively, under the guidance of the Civil Surgeon Ludhiana Dr Rajinder Kaur. Panches and sarpanches from nearby villages participated in the conference. In her address, Dr Rajinder Kaur said approximately 4.40 lakh children would be given polio drops in Ludhiana district. As many as 2,150 camps would be set up to achieve the target.

MANSA
NOTARY STAMPS: Mr K.K. Bansal, president of the District Notary Association, in a press note issued on Tuesday, alleged that the state government was not taking steps to stop evasion of stamp duty which has resulted in a loss of millions of rupees to the exchequer every year. It was further demanded that the stamp levy be reduced to Rs 5 per attestation as was prevalent in the neighbouring states.

NAWANSHAHR
FUNCTION HELD: Mr Ishwar Singh, SSP, released the special issue of a children’s magazine “Nikkian Karumblan” to mark the completion of five years of its publication at a function organised at Government High School, Balachaur, about 5 km from here, on Tuesday. The function was organised by the local Bhai Ghanaiya Seva Samiti, Mr Birbal Tokhi, general secretary, of the samiti said.

DIED: Shingara Singh (50) a resident of Mehandipur village, died when a vehicle hit his bicycle near the local sugarmill while he was returning home after his duty at the mill on Monday. His body was found lying on the road on Tuesday. A case has been registered.

PATHANKOT
SUMMONED: The Divisional Forest Officer, Mr R.K. Luna, Range Officer, Mr Ranjit Singh and Demarcation Clerk-cum-Patwari, Mr Hakim Singh, were summoned by Mr Karnail Singh, Judicial Magistrate First Class, here, under Section 323/354/34 of the IPC for outraging the modesty of Raj Rani, a resident of Phangarian village, under P.S. Sadar tehsil here. The complaint was lodged by her husband Chaman Lal.

PHAGWARA
ENVIRONMENT FAIR: A ‘vatavaran chetna’ march-cum-rally was held here on Thursday to make the people aware of pollution free environment. The march was held as part of the 10th Environment Fair. Hundreds of students and activists from various NGOs participated in the march which was organised by the local Environment Association.

SAMRALA
NOMINATIONS FILED: Three lawyers of the local bar association filed their nominations for the election of the Samrala Bar Association here on Wednesday. The last date for the nomination is December 7 and the date of withdrawal December 9.

SANGRUR
HONOURED: The following were honoured by Mr B.M. Singh, Commissioner of Income Tax, Patiala division at a function organised here on Thursday by the local Income Tax Department to honour the highest income tax payers — Dr Vinod Kumar Singla, Mr Kasturi Lal and Dr K.G. Singla in the salary, business and professional categories, respectively.

condemned: The National Muslim Welfare Movement has condemned the statements given by the Prime Minister, Mr Atal Behari Vajpayee, relating to the issues of Babri Masjid and Ram Temple. A press release stated that by giving such statement, the PM has hurt the sentiments of the minority groups. 

cases solved: As many as 38 problem cases under the non-performing assets (NPAs) were settled at the recovery camp organised by the State Bank of Patiala at Dharampur. The camp was presided over by Mr R.K. Rattan, AGM of the bank. 

Relay fast: The relay fast of the Super Bazar Employees entered 11th day today. A massive rally was organised by the employees. The employees are demanding immediate release of salary and adjustment of super bazar employees in other government departments. The leader condemned the UT Administration for closing down the super bazars in the city. 

Two honoured: Two officials of Hotel Shivalikview, Mr Ganesh Chander and Mr Dina Nath, working as bell boys were honoured by Ms Neeru Nanda, Chairperson, CITCO, on Wednesday. She praised the duo for their commendable presence of mind, courage and upright attitude in nabbing the thief and catching him redhanded. Apart from awarding them commendation certificates, cash award of Rs 5,000 and Rs 2,000 were presented to both of them. 

NSS camp: A 10-day NSS camp was inaugurated at Dev Samaj College, Sector 36, here on Thursday. Ms Madhvi Kataria, DPI Colleges, was the chief guest and Dr C.L. Narang, project coordinator, NSS, Panjab University, was the guest of honour. The activities by the NSS volunteers will include motivation of blood donors, teaching vocational skills to destitute women, educating needy children.

BHIWANI
WATER SUPPLY: The Irrigation Department has been asked to ensure adequate supply of water at the tail end of Phoolpura minor. This was directed on a complaint received from the residents of Bamla in the open darbar held here on Wednesday by the Deputy Commissioner. The Deputy Commissioner directed the Superintending Engineer concerned to ensure adequate supply of irrigating water to each distributary and canal.

PULSE POLIO PROGRAMME: Polio drops will be given to children below 5 years under the second phase of the Pulse Polio Immunisation programme in the district on December 10. A meeting, held here on Wednesday at Panchayat Bhavan under the chairmanship of Mr S.K. Joshi, Deputy Commissioner, called upon the officers to ensure 100 per cent success of the move. The Civil Surgeon, Dr S.C. Sharma, said 847 polio booths had been set up in the entire district to give polio drops to the children.

SARKAR AAPKE DWAR: The Chief Minister, Mr Om Prakash Chautala, will listen to the problems of the residents of Mundhal Khurd assembly area under ‘sarkar aapke dwar’ at the PWD rest house on Saturday here. This will be the third open darbar in the district to be organised in the second phase of the programme.

ENCROACHMENTS REMOVED: The administration removed encroachments on a piece of land here on Wednesday after complaints that the land in Sector 13 was being misused and some people had been ploughing this land for the past 9 to 10 years, Mr Yogesh Chander Bhardwaj, SDM, said.

JIND
ENCROACHMENTS: The District Administration and the local municipal council, on Tuesday, formulated a scheme for removal of encroachments from public land and unauthorised constructions in the town. Mr R.P. Bhardwaj, Additional Deputy Commissioner, here, said the town had been divided into six sectors for the purpose and municipal authorities had been directed to prepare a list of encroachments and unauthorised constructions in each sector.

SIRSA
LINK CANAL: The foundation of the Bacher Nathor link canal will be laid by the vice-president of the Indian Olympic Association and MLA, Mr Abhay Chautala, on Saturday, the Deputy Commissioner said here on Wednesday. The canal will be constructed at a cost of Rs 2.75 crore and would be completed within 5 months.

GRIEVANCES COMMITTEE: The monthly meeting of the district Grievances Committee will be held on Saturday at the local panchayat Bhavan, the Deputy Commissioner said here on Wednesday. He said the meeting would be chaired by the Haryana Transport Minister, Mr Ashok Kumar Arora.

DEMONSTRATION: The local unit of the NSUI held a demonstration at the local Government National College in protest against the increasing trends of tuitions and the dictatorial attitude of the private bus operators, state spokesman of the NSUI said here on Wednesday. A memorandum to this effect was submitted to the Principal.

SONEPAT
DEPUTED: Mr Jagrup Singh Rathi, Additional Superintendent of Police, deputed the Deputy Superintendent of Police (Headquarters), Mr Hardeep Singh Doon, on Wednesday to inquire into the death of a young housewife Ms Shabana at her in-laws house on November 29 last on a complaint lodged by the brother of the deceased.

AUTHORITIES DIRECTED: The Deputy Commissioner, Mr Sudhir Rajpal, directed the authorities of the Irrigation Department on Thursday to take immediate steps to complete all the ongoing works for de-silting and de-weeding of canals, distributaries and minors by December 18.

MEMORANDUM ISSUED: The Sonepat Residents Welfare Association, the Sonepat Citizens Forum and large number of residents, including members of the municipal council and social activists, in a memorandum, urged the Chief Minister, Mr Om Prakash Chautala, on Thursday to order immediate supersession of the Sonepat Municipal Council and its re-election in view of the Supreme Court’s decision rejecting the appeal of the municipal council against the order of the Punjab and Haryana High Court declaring the inclusion of Sectors 14 and 15 within municipal limits as illegal.

GOODS BURNT: Goods worth several lakhs of rupees were burnt in a fire which broke out in a shop of a tent house at Ganaur town, 16 km from here, on Wednesday. A short circuit in the power lines is reported to be the cause of the fire.

THIEF CAUGHT: A youth was caught red-handed by the residents of tehsil office at Ganaur, 16 km from here, on Wednesday when he, alongwith another youth, was found stealing in a house. A case of theft has been registered against both of them and hunt has been launched to apprehend the youth who managed to escape.

CYCLISTS INJURED: Two cyclists were injured in two different accidents in the city on Thursday. Both the injured were immediately hospitalised and are stated to be out of danger. Cases have been registered in this connection.
