Stage set for league on revised schedule
From Our Sports Reporter

NEW DELHI, Dec 6 — The stage is set for the National Football League (NFL) as the All-India Football Federation (AIFF) and the Indian Premier Football Association (IPFA) have sorted out some of the thorny issues which had threatened to wreck the league till yesterday.

According to the revised schedule of the fifth edition of the NFL, released by chairman of the league Alberto Colaco here today, JCT, Phagwara will take on Mohun Bagan, Calcutta in the opening match of the league in Delhi on December 14, while on the same day, Zee Churchill Brothers will meet Vasco, Goa, in Goa and Indian Telephone Industries will clash against State Bank of Travancore (SBT) at Bangalore.

In other first-round matches on December 15, Tollygunge Agragami will face East Bengal in Calcutta, Mahindra United will take on Air India in Mumbai and Salgaocar will meet FC Kochin in Goa.

In the second round matches on December 18, Vasco meet FC Kochin in Goa, Tollygunge Agragami take on Mohun Bagan in Calcutta, and Mahindra United clash against JCT in Mumbai. ITI play against East Bengal in Bangalore and Zee Churchill Brothers face SBT in Goa on Dec. 19. Salgaocar take on Air India in Goa on December 12.

Mr Colaco said the draw for the remaining rounds will be decided after a meeting of the full National Football League Committee and checking the availability of venues.

The truce between the AIFF and IPFA was apparently worked out after a lengthy meeting between AIFF president P R Dashmunshi and chairman of the IPFA Vijaya Mallaya along with other top officials of the two bodies here yesterday. It is learnt that the AIFF president had to concede a lot of ground to make the IPFA agree to allow their top member clubs to play in the NFL.

The NFL was originally scheduled to begin on November 25, but when the top clubs raised a banner of revolt, and formed the IPFA to secure their just demands, the AIFF was forced to defer the date to November 28 and then again to December 10. But when the top clubs took an unrelenting stand and stood their ground of not taking part in the NFL till their demands were met, the AIFF had to climb down from its “strong” stand, and thrash out the thorny problems with the IPFA representatives here yesterday.

Mr Vijaya Mallaya expressed the satisfaction that both the bodies would be working in close coordination for the betterment of football in the country as the AIFF has conceded a lot many of IPFA’s demands. The AIFF has agreed to include six representatives of the clubs in the NFL committee this year, from the previous two, and from next year, the clubs’ representation would go up to eight members. Also, Mr Shivanand Salgaocar of Salgaocar Club has been included in the NFL finance committee with signing authority while the Champion Club’s representative will be the vice-chairman of then league.

IT probe into cricketers’ income over

NEW DELHI, Dec 6 (IANS) — They can run but they can’t hide, say top Indian income tax (IT) officials who are closer than ever to tightening the noose around past and present cricketers with “undisclosed incomes.”

The IT department’s investigations into such undisclosed incomes of cricketers is complete and reports will be sent in a few days’ time to officers concerned in areas where the cricketers reside, S.C. Parija, director (investigations) at the department, told IANS.

“We have already dispatched the appraisal report of Mohammed Azharuddin and his wife Sangeeta Bijlani to the assessing officer of Hyderabad (where the cricketer lives) The appraisal report on Navjot Singh Sidhu will be submitted in Patiala (Punjab) in 10 days time,” he revealed.

“We are now giving final touches to the reports on Delhi-based cricketers,” he said. The Delhi-based cricketers are former national coach Kapil Dev, and cricketers Ajay Jadeja, Manoj Prabhakar, Ajay Sharma and Nikhil Chopra. “We will be submitting their reports to the assessing officer in seven-eightdays.”

The IT department raided more than 90 premises of past and present cricketers, cricket authorities and suspected bookies on July 20 and 21. The raid was in connection with the match-fixing scandal and was simultaneously carried out in New Delhi, Chandigarh, Calcutta, Bangalore, Ahmedabad and Hyderabad.

According to IT department sources, investigations showed that Kapil Dev has an undisclosed income of more than Rs. 20 million. “Kapil Dev has undisclosed income of more than Rs 20 million. Even Ajay Jadeja and Manoj Prabhakar had undisclosed assets of around Rs.20 million each. Investigations have shown that Ajay Sharma and Nikhil Chopra had undisclosed incomes below Rs 10 million each,” said an officer who is investigating the case, adding that the two are “small fries.”

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) imposed life bans on Azharuddin and Sharma on Tuesday for their alleged involvement in match-fixing. It also debarred Ajay Jadeja and Prabhakar from playing any official matches for five years while exonerating Nayan Mongia.

“This is a cricketer’s only chance. After an assessing officer studies the report, he would send a notice to a cricketer regarding his undisclosed income. A cricketer would be given at least 30 days time for stating his 10-year block return from 1991 to 2001,” Parija said.

“After he submits an account, he will have to pay 60 percent of the tax on the undisclosed income. There is no escaping for a cricketer. If he hides his income or gives a wrong one, investigations will show,” Parija said.

“They will be further penalized and action can be initiated against them. They could be prosecuted and sent to jail which could be anything from six months to seven years of rigorous imprisonment,” he said. He said even though the procedure usually takes at least two years to complete, in this case it might be early.

Another officer said they have evidence that some cricketers have not filed their income tax returns at all. “Ajay Sharma is one such cricketer who will face a tough time. He has not paid his income tax returns. He will now have to pay though his nose. We have evidence that some cricketers also did not show their earnings and salaries made by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI),” the officer said.

Parija said the nature of undisclosed income, undisclosed assets and unexplained expenditure have been mentioned in the appraisal report. “Our priorities were to first finish off investigations on cricketers’ incomes. We will now take up the suspected bookies and officials.”

SBI asks Azhar to join duty

HYDERABAD, Dec 6 (PTI) — Former Indian captain Mohammed Azharuddin, banned for life by the cricket board for his alleged involvement in match-fixing scandal, was asked by his employer State Bank of India to join duty but there was no response from him, a SBI spokesman said here today.

“As a player he enjoys certain privileges like he need not attend duty while playing matches or practising. Since he was not playing either for the country or for state, we had asked him to join duty or submit details of his cricket engagements, but there was no response till now,” the spokesman told PTI.

Azharuddin, at present holding the post of Chief Manager (Public Relations) with SBI, skipped the Ranji matches after CBI report named him in the match-fixing scandal.

He was later suspended by the board for two weeks, the time given to former CBI Joint Director K Madhavan to complete his findings on the issue, which was followed by life ban.

Asked about the possible action following the BCCI decision to ban Azharuddin for life, the spokesman said: “We did not receive any report from the CBI nor the BCCI.”

“As of now, he is our employee and as his name was not found in the national or state squads, we asked him to report for duty or show his cricketing engagements for which there was no response,” he said.

On the possible action against the cricketer, he said: “Right now there is nothing. It would be considered only after we receive any communication from competent authorities.”

Azharuddin will speak to the media at the “appropriate time,” his family members said today.

His family members said Azharuddin was yet to receive the communication banning him for life from the BCCI.

A battery of journalists from the electronic and print media, who have been camping in front of his posh residence at the Banjara Hills since yesterday, were repeatedly told that the cricketer would not meet them.

Family sources said Azharuddin was observing a fast during the holy month of Ramzan.

Hyderabad indifferent to Azhar’s plight

HYDERABAD, Dec 6 (IANS) — Former Indian captain Mohammed Azharuddin, who has been banned from playing cricket for life, may appeal to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) against the ban order, sources close to the family said.

“He may exercise the option available to him to appeal to the disciplinary committee of the board to reconsider its decision to ban him for life,” a source said. Azharuddin, the most successful captain in India’s history, is seeking legal advice to decide his future course of action.

Family members said Azharuddin had been given the punishment without a thorough probe into the match-fixing issue. “It is unfortunate that the board acted in an arbitrary manner without taking into consideration the statements made by Azharuddin to prove his innocence both before the CBI and before the BCCI’s special investigator,” said Abrar, Azharuddin’s cousin.

Azharuddin’s residence at the posh Banjara Hills neighborhood here is deserted these days. The lone security guard told reporters gathered outside that he had nothing to say.

The city, which had erupted in joy when a shy and lean Azharuddin hit three consecutive centuries on debut against England in 1984, is indifferent to the former captain’s plight. Cricket lovers used to his magical play feel that Azharuddin had to pay for his misdeeds.

Some people, who still sympathise with him, blame his second wife, Sangeeta Bijlani, for his plight. They said Azharuddin’s decline started when he divorced first wife Naureen to marry a film actress, leaving behind two children. “It is the curse of the innocent girl and the two children,” a cricket lover said.

Azharuddin’s mentor and former cricketer Shivlal Yadav said he was sad for Azharuddin’s parents and other family members. “His grandfather must be weeping in his grave,” Yadav said, recalling the days when Azharuddin’s grandfather used to bring him to the Gymkhana grounds every morning.

“He was keen to see Azharuddin as a great cricketer and used to request us to take care of the boy,” said Yadav, secretary of the Hyderabad Cricket Association (HCA). After hitting three successive centuries, Azharuddin had said that his grandfather was his source of strength.

Yadav said he never thought that a pious and shy boy like Azharuddin could indulge in match-fixing. “We had to trust a person like Azhar,” he added.

Yadav, however, said the BCCI was not fair in awarding punishment to the guilty. He said that while Azharuddin had been banned for life, Ajay Jadeja had been let off with a five-year ban. “A crime is a crime and the guilty should be awarded equal punishment,” he said.

Born on February 8, 1963 in a middle-class family, Azharuddin rose to dizzy heights. Former Indian captain Sunil Gavaskar had once described him as “God’s gift to Indian cricket”.

A gentleman and devout Muslim, he was soon elevated to the post of captain. The longest-serving Indian captain played in 99 Test matches and scored 22 centuries. He scored centuries in his first and last Test innings. He also played 334 one-day internationals and scored seven centuries and 58 half-centuries.

Australian cricket administrators were tight-lipped about the issues discussed in Tuesday’s meeting between Condon and Melick. “It is for the joint ICC-ACB investigation team to decide when the outcome of the London meeting and forthcoming Indian visit are to be made public,” ACB’s media manager Brian Murgatroyd told IANS on Wednesday.

Career over, admits Ajay Jadeja

NEW DELHI, Dec 6 (UNI) —All-rounder Ajay Jadeja today expressed his anguish for being banned from playing cricket for five years by the BCCI and admitted that this decision has ended his international career.

Jadeja, who had led India in the shorter version of the game said he was upset with the BCCI’s decision, it effectively ended my career. “What is there for me to look forward as a cricketer.” He asserted that of all the players who have been punished by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) for match-fixing, he has been the worst affected. “I don’t know why I have been given such harsh treatment.”

“I have given my best for the game but suddenly I have been made scapegoat. If the BCCI does not want to play me. I also don’t want to play,’’ he said. Jadeja claimed that the ban has hit him the most “I have still few more years of cricket. But now I have been prevented from playing the game.”

He said: “I was never involved in any betting or match fixing scandal, I played cricket pure and simple, I have told this to the CBI, Mr Madhavan and the BCCI, I will fight till my name is cleared,” and added that he would appeal to the BCCI against this verdict”. Jadeja claimed that he never used any political connection to get himself cleared.

Vaughan to miss final Test

KARACHI, Dec 6 (Reuters) — Michael Vaughan, England’s middle-order batsman, has been ruled out of the third and final Test against Pakistan beginning tomorrow with a calf injury.

Captain Nasser Hussain told Reuters today: “Michael is 90 per cent fit when batting and 80 per cent fit while fielding. He would probably go through a county game. But not a Test match.”

Wicketkeeper Alec Stewart is a slight doubt but according to Hussain has a 99 per cent chance of playing in Karachi.

Hussain said: “Alec has got a bit of tennis elbow. At the moment, he says he has a 1 per cent chance he will not be fit on the morning.

“We have, therefore, delayed announcing our side because he (Stewart) affects the balance of our side.”

It looked likely that Hussain would keep faith with Warwickshire’s Graeme Hick who has scores of 16,14, 18 and 0 in this series.

“In back-to-back Tests, you don’t make wholesale changes. Graeme had a difficult time but he is a good compact player,” Hussain said.

Hussain will not only be concerned with Hick’s form but also his own and that of wrist spinner Ian Salisbury.

Hussain has scores of 7, 0 (retired hurt), 23 and 5. He has yet to complete 800 runs in 24 first-class matches this year. Salisbury has picked up just one wicket in two tests.

Teams (from):

England: N. Hussain (captain), M.A. Atherton, M.E. Trescothick, G.P. Thorpe, A.J. Stewart, G.A. Hick, C. White, A.F. Giles, I. Salisbury, A. Caddick D. Gough M.J. Hoggard, A. Flintoff, P. Nixon.

Sansarpur prepares to regain glory
By Prabhjot Singh
Tribune News Service

CHANDIGARH, Dec 6 — Sansarpur, once nursery of Indian hockey, may soon regain its old glory in the sport as it has drawn an ambitious plan of nurturing talent through proper training at the grassroot level, provided it gets a “go ahead” from the Director-General of Defence Estates.

The Sansarpur Hockey Association has in a representation to the Director-General of Defence Estates requested that the hockey playfield in the village be leased to it on long term basis as it plans to lay a synthetic surface there.

In Jalandhar, the Department of Civil Aviation has also requested the Director-General of Defence Estates, for a fresh lease of the air strip so that the Jalandhar Flying Club, presently operating from Patiala Aviation Club, can move back to its “home” in Jalandhar. The lease of the air strip at Jalandhar had expired some years ago.

Sansarpur hockey field also belongs to the Army.

According to Col Balbir Singh, Olympian, Arjuna awardee and one of 27 Olympic and Asian Games medallists from the village, the hockey playfield in Sansarpur was originally allowed by the British Army to be used for promoting hockey in the vicinity. In 1994 from the Headquarters of 11 Corps, Lieut-Gen H. Kalha, had allowed its continuous use for practice purposes by trainees of the hockey academy run with the help of JCT Mills, Phagwara.

“But now when we are embanking upon an ambitious project of getting a synthetic surface laid at the village hockey academy, we need an assurance that the land would remain available to us for a certain period,” says Col Balbir Singh.

“We sought the intervention of Mr Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa, who was until recently the Union Minister of Sports, to take up the issue with the Ministry of Defence. Mr Dhindsa did take up the case but now when he has been shifted from the Sports Ministry to the Ministry of Chemical and Fertilizers, we want this case to be pursued to its logical conclusion so that we can go ahead with our programme,” adds Colonel Balbir Singh.

Sansarpur has a unique contribution to world hockey in general and Indian hockey in particular. The village, which is located just outside Jalandhar cantonment, has produced 14 Olympians, a distinction unprecedented else where in the world.

Col Gurmeet Singh Kular (late), Udham Singh Kular (late), Gurdev Singh Kular, Darshan Singh Kular, Balbir Singh Kular (Punjab Police), Jagjit Singh Kular, Balbir Singh Kular (Services), Tarsem Singh Kular and Ajit Pal Singh Kular have all represented India in Olympic Games between 1932 and 1976.

Hardial Singh Kular (late), Hadev Singh Kular, Jagjit Singh Kular and Harvinder Singh Kular have represented Kenya in Olympic Games between 1960 and 1988 while Bindi Kular represented Canada in the 2000 Olympic Games at Sydney.

Udham Singh Kular (late), Gurdev Singh Kular, Maj Balbir Singh Kular (Jr) (Services), Gurjit Singh Kular, Darshan Singh Kular, Balbir Singh Kular (Punjab Police), Balbir Singh Kular Sr (Services), Jagjit Singh Kular, Tarsem Singh Kular and Ajit Pal Singh Kular represented India in Asian Games between 1958 and 1974.

Besides, Sub Takhur Singh Kular, Col Randhir Singh Kular, Darshan Singh Sethi and Parminder Singh Kular also represented India in various international hockey tournaments and Test matches.

Pardeep Singh, George and Harpreet Singh have played for India juniors while Prithpal Singh and Mohinder Singh represented Canada in World Cup hockey tournament. Nikki Kular played for England.

“Nowhere in the world is there any place which can boast of having more Olympians and gold medallists than Sansarpur,” claims the Colonel maintaining that all 14 Olympians are “Kulars” from one family, one street of the same village. They have won eight gold, one silver and six bronze medals in the Olympic Games. Besides, they have four gold and eight silver medals in Asian Games to their credit.

“This unique village has been ignored in the past. If the necessary infrastructure is provided to the village, it can produce world beaters again besides working for upliftment of hockey in the country. We have already drawn a comprehensive plan to train and nurture hockey talent where approximately 200 young boys are being trained everyday,” adds Colonel Balbir Singh.

Malleswari’s foreign coach dropped
From Ravi Dhaliwal

PATIALA, Dec 6 — The Indian Weightlifting Federation (IWF) has decided not to renew the contract of Leonid Taranenko, the foreign coach of Karnam Malleswari, the only Indian sportsperson to have won a medal for the country at the Sydney Olympics.

Chief coach of the national weightlifting squad and Dronacharya awardee P.S. Sandhu, who ,at present, is at the NIS in connection with the ongoing women weightlifting camp, confirmed this development.

Meanwhile, the IWF in a five-page strongly-worded statement has put the blame on L. Taranenko for using wrong tactics and strategy leading to Malleswari missing out on a gold medal. In the aftermath of her bronze medal winning effort at Sydney, K. Malleswari had reacted strongly to the methods adopted by Mr.P.S.Sandhu.The ace lifter, while giving credit to L. Taranenko, had said that Mr P.S. Sandhu had tried to ‘blackmail’ her and that the chief coach had acted in a manner which was detrimental to her interests.

Moreover, the IWF has squarely laid the blame on L. Taranenko and SAI coach Hansa Sharma for misleading the country at the world weightlifting championships held at Athens, prior to the Sydney Olympics, where the Indians failed to clinch even a single Olympic qualification berth out of a projected four berths, thereby putting the Indians in a piquant situation where they could field only two lifters in the Olympics instead of four.

The IWF has made it clear in the statement saying India has lost not only a gold medal at Sydney because of the utter failure of L. Taranenko and it was because of the collective failure of Ms Hansa Sharma and Taranenko at Athens that India did not earn even one qualification berth.

Foreign coaches in any discipline are appointed by the government on the recommendation of respective federations. P.S. Sandhu confirmed that the IWF had already written to the Director-General of SAI last month recommending that ‘the IWF did not need the services of L. Taranenko in future.’

The services of the foreign coach were availed at $ 3000 per month exclusive of perks. Leonid Taranenko was associated with the training of K. Malleswari and other lifters at the NIS here for nearly seven months.

Anand held, faces unclear position

NEW DELHI, Dec 6 (PTI) — Super grandmaster Viswanathan Anand faced an unclear position against Poland’s Bartlomiej Macieja and was content with a draw in the first game of the fourth round match of the World Chess Championship here today.

Playing with black pieces, the Indian world No 2 opted for Sicilian opening and his game traversed into an unclear position till the end before he decided to settle for a draw on the 26th move.

Anand will resume his battle against the Polish giant-killer tomorrow with an advantage of white pieces and a win will see him through to the quarterfinals.

Macieja, who yesterday scored an upset victory over Alexander Beliavsky of Slovakia in the tie-break games, gave tense moments to Anand and tomorrow’s clash could prove crucial for the way the championship would proceed.

After getting an unclear position in the start, Anand made efforts to castle his king, but in vain. Macieja played very defensive game and Anand was beset with his immovable king, which he had to keep in the centre till the end.

The title favourite spent a little extra time in understanding the situation that he was faced with.

The position offered risk to anyone who tried to open his ranks and the two GMs were forced to sign a truce treaty.

Indian eves falter against Australia

LINCOLN (New Zealand), Dec 6 (PTI) — India women made heavy weather of an easy target after a confident start and succumbed to Australia by 51 runs in the Cricinfo Women’s World Cup here today.

The prospect of playing the defending champions weighed high on the minds of the Indian eves as, replying to a modest Australian total of 223 for five, they ran out of overs and were stopped at 172 for eight in the allotted 50 overs.

Skipper Anju Jain (36) and Anjum Chopra provided India a good start as they compiled 59 runs for the first wicket before the captain was run out by O.J. Magno.

Chopra kept her cool and she took India’s score across the 100-run mark with Purnima Rau (25). India was on 114 in the 34th over when Purnima returned edging a catch to C. Bambury off T.A. McGreogor, who returned with the figures of three for 38 — the best for the Aussie women.

India was still on course for overhauling the Australian total but the well-set Anjum played a lazy shot and was out to the same combination that removed Purnima.
