Flower frustrates India NAGPUR, Nov 29 (UNI) — Andy Flower’s career-best knock of 232 guided Zimbabwe to a creditable draw against India at close of the fifth and final day of the second Test here
today. On the basis of the win at Delhi in the first Test, India won the series
1-0. At the draw of stumps on the final day, Andy (232) and Heath Streak (29) were at the
crease. Andy Flower’s stupendous vigil was mainly responsible for Zimbabwe’s draw, after they were asked to follow-on with 227 runs behind.
Giving Andy admirable support were Alistair Campbell (102) and D Vijloen
(38). Zimbabwe started the day at 238 for three, just 11 runs ahead of the Indian score. Andy Flower and Alistair Campbell, who started the day unbeaten in their eighties, looked in an aggressive
mood. Andy Flower started the day’s proceedings in a billigerent manner, hitting Sunil Joshi for two thunderous fours in the second over of the day. He then reached his 100 with a single towards the mid-on. His century, laced with 13 fours and two sixes, came off 196 balls.
Campbell then got into the act, hitting Srinath for three fours in one over. The third, a perfectly-timed on-drive, brought up his maiden Test hundred in 184 balls and 15 boundaries. The 200-run partnership came in 247
minutes. Immediately after that, Campbell had a loss of concentration and hooked a short one from Zaheer Khan straight down Sunil Joshi’s throat at square leg. Campbell made 102 off 186 balls with 15 boundaries. Grant Flower, who came in next, also seemed to be in an aggressive mood but after making 16 with three boundaries, he was taken by Ganguly at first slip off
Joshi. At this stage, Zimbabwe were at 292 for five, with one hour of play over.
India then had a great chance of getting at the Zimbabwe tail but their fielding once again let them down. S
S Das missed a sharp chance at forward short leg of Viljoen off Joshi’s delivery when the batsmen had not yet got off the mark and Zimbabwe were 294 for five. This wicket would have put India right on
top. Viljoen then proved to be an admirable support to Andy Flower. Flower played the reverse sweep to perfection, hitting both the spinners to the point boundary. Andy also used his feet well to the spinners lofting them straight down the ground and cutting them when ever they pitched
short. Viljoen survived a fiery spell from left handed paceman Zaheer Khan immediately after lunch. Viljoen was hit on the helmet a couple of times. He was also beaten umpteen times but held his nerve to give support to
Andy. Viljoen was finally out after putting 113 runs for the sixth wicket with Andy, when Ganguly pouched a simple catch at slip off Joshi. Vijloen made 38 and most importantly, stayed at the wicket for 158 minutes to frustrate India.
Heath Streak then joined Andy and the two helped themselves to some easy runs although India brought in as many as 10 bowlers.
Andy crossed the 200-mark in style, with a ferocious square cut off Shrandeep, which raced to the point boundary. He got his 200 in 486 minutes, after having faced 392 balls and having 27 hits to the fence and two
sixes. Sarandeep was the most impressive bowler for India, taking four wickets in the second innings and six overall in his debut Test.

CBI not aware
of recording NEW DELHI, Nov 29 (UNI) — Controversial Indian cricketer Manoj Prabhakar today said his lack of faith in those investigating the match-fixing scandal had forced him to video tape his deposition before the Central Bureau of Investigation in
May. Meanwhile, the CBI said it was not overtly perturbed that the former Indian cricketer
secretly video recorded his statement before the agency during the match-fixing probe.
Prabhakar told UNI, “I did this because of my past experience with the Chandrachud Committee. I do not trust the CBI either. Whatever I have done is to safeguard my own interest.’’
He alleged that Justice Y.B. Chandrachud never asked him the name of the cricketer who had offered him bribe to underperform during a tournament in Sri Lanka in 1994, but in his report the committee had noted that Prabhakar had refused to disclose the
name. “I never wanted the past to be repeated. I did it to ensure that the CBI noted what I had told them,’’ Prabhakar clarified saying that he had submitted the recorded tapes to BCCI’s anti-corruption commissioner R. Madhavan, a former CBI official.
CBI sources said, they were not aware of any such recording by the ex-allrounder and even if he had done so it did not cause any alarm.
“We treated him as a gentleman and allowed him to appear before the investigating team without any frisking. We are not aware if he recorded the proceedings,’’ the sources
said.

FAISALABAD (Pakistan), Nov 29 (Reuters) — Pakistan were 243 for five at the close on the opening day of the second Test against England today. Yousuf Youhana and captain Moin Khan steered Pakistan out of trouble to 243 for five with an unbeaten 92-run partnership for the sixth wicket on the opening day of the second Test against England today. The home side, who won the toss, slumped to 151 for five after England spinner Ashley Giles took three quick wickets. Opener Saeed Anwar, who scored a brisk 53, and Inzamam-ul-Haq (0) were dismissed in the space of three balls just before lunch by the left-armer. But Youhana, with 61 off 173 balls, and Moin, whose 57 off 83 balls included two sixes, steadied the innings and the pair had got the measure of the England attack by close of play. Giles took three for 63 off 24 overs. Akram honoured for 100th appearance FAISALABAD, Nov 29 (Reuters) — Pakistan all-rounder and former captain Wasim Akram was honoured by his team-mates before the start of the second Test against England at the Iqbal Stadium for reaching a total of 100 Test
appearances. Immediately after Pakistan won the toss and decided to bat, the team lined up to honour of one of the greatest left arm fast bowlers and present him a golden
plaque. Akram is the only bowler to have taken over 400 wickets at both Test and one-day level. His Test tally is 408 wickets at an average of 23.02 and 432 wickets in one-day international at an average of
23.81. Akram said: “I am delighted, honoured and flattered. I am feeling younger and very much motivated by the occasion and the gesture shown to me by the members of the
team. “I shall remember this for the rest of my life. I wish Pakistan does well here against England to make it even more memorable for me and Pakistan,” he
said. The plaque was presented to him by the former captain of Pakistan Javed Miandad who is now the coach of the
team. Miandad himself has played in 124 Tests for Pakistan. |

Soccer teams to skip Millennium Cup
? NEW DELHI, Nov 29 — The All-India Football Federation (AIFF) has promised a star-spangled football fiesta, come January,
2001. If AIFF president Priya Ranjan Dasmunshi is to be believed, celebrated international soccer stars such as Ivan Zamorano and Marcelo Salas of Chile, Faustino Asprilla, Freddy Rincon or Anthony de Villa of Columbia, and Dwight Yorke of Trinidad and Tobago, will be “gracing” the Indian soil to play in the Millennium Super Soccer Cup 2001 to be played from January 10 to 25 at three venues in India—Calcutta, Kochi and Goa. According to Mr Dasmunshi, the Millennium Cup is the AIFF’s “national initiative to promote football in India through exposure to international soccer, as a first step to take football to the masses and reinvest the game with all its former
glory.” The AIFF president said the Millennium Cup would feature 16 teams like American giants Chile, Uruguay and Columbia, African heavyweights Cameroon, European leaders Iceland and Yugoslavia, Asian Cup winners Japan along with Hong Kong, Indonesia, giants from West Asia Bahrain, Qatar, Iraq and Jordan, Central Asia’s Uzbekistan, Trinidad and Tobago from the Caribbeans, New Zealand from Down Under and hosts
India”. Mr Dasmunshi has promised to field the “best Indian team”, though he stonewalled questions about the recent revolt by nine leading clubs against the AIFF, and their decision not to release their star players for the federation’s
tournaments. The 32-match Millennium Cup will be played at the “Mecca of Indian football” Calcutta, Kochi and Goa, with Calcutta getting the honour of hosting both the inaugural and final matches. The matches in Calcutta will be staged at the 1,20,000-capacity Juba Bharati Krirangan, one of Asia’s biggest stadiums, for the facelift of which, the West Bengal Government is reported to have sanctioned Rs 1.90
crore. At a gala function here, which was supposed to be a Press conference, but which turned out to be a “glittering show” for the sponsors, where the AIFF top brass and their spouses, besides a dozen odd Delhi Soccer Association officials were present, detailed programme of the tournament was announced by Mr Dasmunshi. Kapil Dev, cleared of his involvement in the cricket match-fixing scandal by the Central Bureau of Investigation, was there too. If Mr Dasmunshi is to be believed, Kapil is the prized catch for the sponsors. The Bombay-based Studio 2000 would be bringing in the moola, through lucrative sponsorship
deals. The AIFF president tried to dodge some embarrassing questions lobbed at him, particularly the ones concerning the newly-formed Indian Premier Football Association, headed by liquor baron Vijay Mallya. The absence of AIFF secretary Kedar Nath Mour from the function, only highlighted the schism in the national
body. There were no representatives of leading clubs in the country. The Punjab Football Association president, Mr Samir Thapar, has announced his candidature for the presidentship of the AIFF against Mr Dasmunshi. According to sources, many of the teams slated to play in the Millennium Cup, may not eventually make it as their players would then be busy with their respective national league. Hong Kong have already made known their intention of not playing in the
tournament. The AIFF has nominated three of its veteran officials, Mr Ashok Ghosh, Mr P.P. Laxman and Mr Alberto Coalco, to “control” the tournament in Calcutta, Kochi and Goa,
respectively. The promoters have put out handsome prize money of $ 1,50,000 for the winners, $ 1,00,000 for the first runners-up, $ 50,000 for the second runners-up and $ 25,000 for the fairplay award. |
Anand to play
Israeli today NEW DELHI, Nov 29 — Grand Master Vishwanathan Anand will play his first match in the World Chess Championship 2000 against Hannes Stefansson of Israel here tomorrow. Anand, the world No 2 and the brand Ambassador of NITT, is overwhelming favourite to win the match, which starts at 1.30 p
m. Drawing a parallel between NIIT and chess, Grand Master Anand said: “Chess is more than just a game. It teaches you to concentrate, to think before making a new move, to weigh options, to recognise opportunity and make the best of it, but most importantly, chess teaches you to win”. |

Former national champions Indian Railways outplayed Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) 5-3 in the penultimate group ‘A’ league match. While M. National shooting
meet concludes PHILLAUR (Ludhiana), Nov 29 — The 44th National Shooting Championship came to a noisy close with the bursting of crackers and blazing fireworks at the closing ceremony at the PPA grounds here
today. Shooter T.S. Dhillon mesmerised the stadium crowd with his perfect shooting and reverse shooting to start the proceedings. Then followed the dare-devil bosy on motorbikes who were lustily cheered for their balancing acts with so many of them perched on the same
bike. A flutter was created when a horse became adamant and took the rider off the mark and out of the field during the tent-pegging show. All eyes curiously followed the errant horse fearing injury to the rider. The animal was tamed soon
after. Mr Sarabjit Singh, DGP, Punjab Police, gave away the prizes while Mr A.A. Siddiqui, as chairman of the organising committee, thanked the
participants. Mr Sarabjit Singh while declaring the championship closed announced that the next national shooting championship would be held at Indore. |

Ranji Trophy: Haryana fail to clear first
hurdle CHANDIGARH, Nov 29 — The league phase of the North Zone Ranji Trophy matches, completed recently, saw certain stupendous feats as well as certain unexpected results. There were a string of superlative performances—individual as well as collective. Punjab looked a completely transformed and dominant side recording five straight outright victories—four of them innings wins collecting 40 points—to enter the pre-quarterfinal stage along with Delhi (29 points) and Jammu and Kashmir (24 points). Himachal and Services, as has been the case, continued to wallow in mediocrity. The most startling of them all was the elimination of Haryana in the league phase itself and qualification by Jammu and Kashmir at their expense for the first time in the championship.
Haryana, in fact, gave the impression of being a jaded outfit having brittle batting, ordinary bowling and none-too-impressive fielding. During the league campaign in which they played five matches the team failed to force even a single victory. They came a cropper against strong teams like Punjab and Delhi, while against teams like Himachal and Services, virtually perennial punching bags in the zone they failed to raise the level of their performance and had to settle for draws. They finished their campaign with just 13 points in their
kitty. Haryana started their campaign disastrously against lowly Jammu and Kashmir. After having been bundled out for a paltry 174 runs the hosts batsmen feasted on their seemingly ineffective bowling attack. Former India captain Ajay Jadeja, who shifted to Jammu and Kashmir this season, turned a tormentor for them. The dashing middle order batsman scored a fine century in the very first match he played for the state. Helped by medium pacer Abdul Qayuum, who bowled well for his five-wicket haul in the second innings, the team recorded a nine-wicket win giving Haryana a taste of things to come.
In the next match versus Delhi, Haryana, at one stage, were in a position to take vital first innings lead when they needed just 11 runs with three wickets in hand. But apparent lack of nerves saw them lose the wickets of Ishan Ganda, Feroze Ghyas and Deepak Kaushik in quick succession as the team fell short by 10 runs to be bundled out for
339. Against Punjab they largely had a forgettable outing. Munish Sharma, who got the opportunity to play the match as regular opening batsman Ravneet Ricky was selected to play for Board President’s XI at Faridabad, scored a scintillating century, while off-spinner Harbhajan Singh and Bharat Bhushan, No 11 batsmen, combined to rub salt on their wounds recording a big last-wicket partnership as Harbhajan notched up his career-best knock highlighting the inadequacies in their bowling. In the match against Himachal at Mandi skipper Parinder Sharma boosted the sagging morale of the side scoring a double(century unbeaten 207). He continued his good run scoring a century in the next math as well as the team took drew both the
matches. Parinder who scored impressive 503 runs at a staggering 83.83 runs per match and young leg-spinner Amit Mishra, who had a rich haul of 22 wickets, including two five-wicket hauls, performed admirably. But for their contributions the campaign of the 991 edition champions would have been in total disarray. Ishan Ganda, one down batsman, amassed 287 runs with the help of a century and two half centuries emerged their next most successful batsman, while medium pacers Vineet Jain and Feroze Ghyas and off-spinner Pankaj Thakur were the next most successful bowlers all capturing 11 wickets
each. Haryana pace attack largely revolved around seasoned Vineet Jain, who toiled manfully but with limited success. Nitin Aggarwal, who shared the new ball along with Vineet against Punjab at Amritsar, though showed good temperament proved too young and raw and to expect him to deliver would certainly have been premature. For a long time their spin attack was in the safe hands of left-arm spinner Pardeep Jain and Pankaj Thakur, who invariably always emerged the leading wicket-takers from the North Zone. Jain, besides being a dependable bowler was a doughty batsman capable of holding on to one end for quite some time and rescued the team several time on the basis of batting alone. Luckily for Haryana, Mishra, blooded into the squad in his place, fared admirably with the ball.
Haryana, in fact, have a lot of youngsters like Ishan Ganda, Sanjay Dalal, Ajay Ratra, Nitin Aggarwal, Amit Mishra and Sonu Sharma in their ranks who need exposure, time as well as proper guidance before they are able to serve the state. Earlier the team looked up to former skipper Amarjeet Kaypee and mercurial India one-day captain Ajay Jadeja, who besides having a sobering influence on the team came up with impressive contributions more often than not. While Kaypee—one of the most successful batsmen in domestic cricket—announced his retirement recently, the fate of the latter hangs in the balance owing to his alleged involvement in match-fixing. The presence of these two motivated even others to give off their best. Any team which loses performers of such calibre is bound to face rough weather at least for some
time. The team, in the meantime, would certainly be better off if players like Rajesh Puri, Jitender Singh and Ajay Ratra perform to their potential along with others and chip in with weighty contributions when it matters. Otherwise, the journey ahead looks weary and cumbersome for them. |
