Sachin toys with Zimbabwe attack NAGPUR, Nov 26 (PTI) — India buried Zimbabwe under an avalanche of runs and declared their first innings at a mammoth 609 for six with Sachin Tendulkar completing a double century on the second day of the second Test here today. Tendulkar, who scored a magnificent unbeaten 201 — his second double ton in Tests — and Rahul Dravid plundered Zimbabwe attack for more than four and a half hours today as India added 303 runs losing four wickets from just 65.5 overs to their overnight score of 306 for two. Zimbabwe, needing to score 410 to avoid a follow-on, were 59 for one in reply with Guy Whittal on 34 and Stuart Carlisle on four when the day’s play ended four overs short, despite continuing 35 minutes after the scheduled close. Gavin Rennie was run out for 19. Rahul Dravid completed his
eighth hundred in Tests before being dismissed for the first time in the series for 162 runs. His 249-run partnership with Tendulkar was India’s best third wicket stand against Zimbabwe. Opener Shiv Sunder Das had scored his maiden Test hundred yesterday as the batsmen flourished on a perfect batting track at the Vidarbha Cricket Association grounds here. India looked totally in command as they resumed from 306 for two and added 157 runs in the first session. Both Dravid and Tendulkar were in fine nick and sent the hapless Zimbabwe bowlers running for covers. Tendulkar was very severe on left-arm spinners Grant Flower and leg-spinner Brian Murphy pulling, cutting and lofting them at will to all corners of the ground. Dravid, who was seven runs short of his century yesterday, reached the milestone with the help of 15 fours early in the morning after facing 220 balls. He then hit the first six of the innings lofting Grant Flower over the long-off. Dravid was lucky to survive a chance when Guy Whittal grounded him at short mid-wicket off Murphy when on 120. India took lunch at 463 for two with Dravid batting on 153 and Tendulkar on 142. Dravid was out soon after the break when his attempted hook off Streak was caught by wicket-keeper Andy Flower. His 301 ball knock included 20 fours and one six. The departure of Dravid saw India’s scoring rate slow down considerably and only 83 runs could be added from 26 overs in the post-lunch session. Captain Saurav Ganguly, who came at the fall of Dravid, added 59 runs for the fourth wicket with Tendulkar before being caught by Streak off Grant Flower for 30 which included two fours and a six. Ajit Agarkar (12) did not last long but Sunil Joshi (27) gave excellent support to Tendulkar as the batting maestro approached his second double century of his career. The Indian batting maestro reached his double century with a flick to midwicket off skipper Heath Streak and remained unconquered. His 281-ball knock was studded with 27 hits to the fence and lasted 392 minutes. Tendulkar, who has a world record of 26 centuries in the shorter version of the game, became the fifth highest century maker in Test cricket when he scored his 24th Test century, sharing the record with Australia’s Greg Chappell. The little master’s big innings saw him post his 50th international century in an illustrious career spanning just 11 years. After a flurry of runs this morning, the post lunch session which saw the exit of Dravid was a drab affair with just 83 runs coming off 26 overs. But Tendulkar once again broke into a belligerent mood as he hit three
successive fours of Henry Olonga to bring up his 150 and the 500 of the innings. However, the regular flow of wickets at the other end checked his bid to overhaul’s his career-best 217 or India’s highest individual score of 236, scored by Sunil Gavaskar. With Tendulkar reaching his landmark, Ganguly applied the closure. Wicketkeeper Vijay Dahiya was batting on two.

in 1-day team NAGPUR, Nov 26 (PTI) — Delhi off-spinner Nikhil Chopra and Punjab all-rounder Reetinder Singh Sodhi were today selected for the Indian squad for the first three one-day internationals against Zimbabwe keeping in mind new foreign coach John Wright’s preference for youngsters. Chopra and Sodhi will replace all-rounder Robin Singh and southpaw Vinod Kambli from the team that played their last one-day series in Sharjah. Selection committee Chairman Chandu Borde told reporters after the announcement of the team that off-spinner Ashish Kapoor was also considered but Chopra got the nod for his all-round ability. Borde said speedster Javagal Srinath was not considered for the 14-member squad as he had requested to be kept out of the one-day series for personal reasons. Borde said Wright’s preference of young blood in the team was given due importance while selecting the team and that was the reason for the inclusion of many youngsters in the squad. Team: Saurav Ganguly (capt), Shiv Sunder Das, Rahul Dravid, Sachin Tendulkar, Reetinder Singh Sodhi, Yuvraj Singh, Hemang Badani, S. Success due to stint with county: McGrath BRISBANE, Nov 26 (Reuters) — Glenn McGrath has credited a stint with English county team Worcestershire as the key to his amazing 10-wicket haul in Australia’s landslide win over West Indies. The lanky fast bowler was the unanimous choice as Man of the Match after taking figures of 6-17 and 4-10 for a combined return of 10-27 as Australia thrashed the once-mighty West Indies by an innings and 126 runs in under three days. No other bowler in history has ever taken 10 or more wickets for fewer runs in a Test match but McGrath insisted there was nothing special about his latest haul. "I just bowled it in the spot, I just tried to keep it simple," McGrath said. The 30-year-old said his success could be attributed to the fact he spent the off-season playing in England and has started the Australian summer fitter than ever. Australia’s Test players were given a rare chance to play county cricket in England this year after the national team decided not to take a winter tour because of the Sydney Olympics. While some stayed home to watch the Games, other players like McGrath and leg spinner Shane Warne took up the chance to go abroad. Months of bowling on England’s spongier wickets paid off for McGrath when Brisbane’s Gabba pitch turned out to be unusually slow during the first Test because the wicket was prepared much later than usual after the Gabba was used to stage interstate Olympic soccer matches. While West Indies bowlers struggled to find their line and length, McGrath ripped through their batsmen with his unerring accuracy. McGrath is not the world’s fastest bowler and may not move the ball as much as others but he still has plenty of tricks up his sleeve. Before the first Test, McGrath had dismissed West Indian world record holder Brian Lara 10 times, more than any other bowler in Test cricket. By the end, it was 12. McGrath got him for a duck in the first innings then again for four in the second innings. "I think I summed the wicket up pretty early," McGrath said. "I realised there wasn’t too much in it, not too much bounce and movement, so I just tried to keep the ball in the same area and didn’t go away from that." Australian captain Steve Waugh said McGrath had produced an amazing spell on a wicket that had offered virtually no encouragement to the quick men. "Full credit to Glenn for getting 10 wickets on that sort of wicket, it really was a featherbed and it wasn’t easy to bowl on," Waugh said. "I’ve seen him bowl as well as that without getting the wickets but this was his game, no doubt about that. "He got the edges and things went his way but if you keep putting them in the right spot you’re going to get the rewards." McGrath’s haul lifted his career tally to 298 wickets from 63 Tests and within two of joining Shane Warne (366) and Dennis Lillee (355) as the only Australians to reach 300 Test wickets. On current form, he should join their exclusive club next week when the second Test starts in Perth on Friday. Fast bowler Jason Gillespie said today he was happy to take a back-seat role in a fearsome three-man pace attack in the second Test against the West Indies starting in Perth on Friday. Selectors have recalled Gillespie to their 12-man squad. He will replace Western Australian batsman Damien Martyn, the 12th man in the first Test. Gillespie was originally named for the first Test but withdrew with a slight hamstring strain. The aggressive paceman has not played a Test for Australia since breaking his leg in a collision with captain Steve Waugh in Sri Lanka 14 months ago. Since then, Australia have won a world record-equalling 11 consecutive matches including their victory by an innings and 126 runs in the first Test on Saturday in Brisbane. Waugh said there was a “strong chance” Gillespie would play with Queensland paceman Andy Bichel likely to be 12th man. |
Parinder hits unbeaten ton NEW DELHI, Nov 26 (UNI) — Skipper Parinder Sharma scored
unbeaten 103, his second century in the tournament this season, as Haryana’s match against Services in the North Zone Ranji Trophy league ended in an exciting draw here today. Haryana earned five points by virtue of their first innings lead while Services had to content with three points. Haryana had made 392 in the first innings and in reply Services were all out for 327. In the second innings, the visitors declared at 176 for eight and Services were 152 for seven when the match ended. Resuming at their overnight score of 312 for nine. Services added 15 runs to their total before Arun Sharma was bowled by Feroz Ghyas. Ghyas (5/63) Amit Mishra (3/86) and Vineet Jain (2/69) were the wicket-takers. After taking a 65-run lead, Haryana made a poor start in the second innings losing two wickets with only 26 runs on board. However, opener Parinder Sharma and Sanjay Dalal added 50 runs for the third wicket and then the Skipper had another good 63-run partnership for the fourth wicket with Jasvir Singh (25). Parinder closed the innings once he reached his third century in the championship. His 103 included one six and 12 boundaries. The visitors batted for 130 minutes. Services, like in the first innings, were off to a dismal start as they lost both their openers when the score was on 18. Harish Bhaskar 30 (3x4) and Sarabjit Singh 51 (10x4) averted the collapse as the hosts managed to score 152 for seven to draw the match. Scoreboard: Haryana (Ist innings) 392. AIFF to go ahead with National
League NEW DELHI, Nov 26 — The All-India Football Federation (AIFF), after an emergency meeting of the executive committee, the National Football League (NFL) emergency committee and representatives of the participating teams here today, “unanimously” resolved to launch the fifth edition of the NFL from December 10. A resolution passed at the meeting said: “Paticipating state associations are advised to reconfirm the participation of their own endorsed team by 7 pm on December 4, to Chairman, NFL.” The resolution further said the “defaulting teams shall be dealt by the state associations followed by appropriate disciplinary measure of the AIFF. Non-compliance of this resolution by the state associations on the appointed date and hour deemed to have been taken as non-participation of their endorsed teams”. The resolution warns that “if any team finally withdraw from the fifth edition of the NFL, the following stand-by teams shall replace them as per the following priority order:1), BSF, Jalandhar. 2) Dempo Sports Club (Goa). 3) Mohd. Sporting. 4) Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd., Bangalore. 5) Indian Bank, Chennai. The AIFF President, Mr Priya Ranjan Dasmunshi said the basis of including the above five teams is in accordance with the relegated order of the First Division and Second Division of the fourth edition of the NFL. He said, “The AIFF meeting has authorised the Chairman, NFL to release the fixtures on 6-12-2000 after having the meeting of the NFL emergency committee in New Delhi. State associations should immediately be communicated this decision in writing for necessary compliance by the honorary president, honorary secretary and Chairman, NFL”. Without wasting any time, immediately after the meeting, Mr Dasmunshi, AIFF secretary Kedar Nath Mour and Chairman of the NFL, Alberto Colaso, jointly wrote a letter to all the state associations slated to participate in the fifth edition of the NFL, informing them of the AIFF resolve. The five clubs, who have joined hands to form the Vijaya Mallaya-headed Indian Premier Football Association (IPFA), and may not respond to the AIFF’s call to play in the league, are likely to be East Bengal, Mohun Bagan, Mahindra and Mahindra, JCT and FC Cochin. In case they pull out, the stand-by teams named by the AIFF today, will fill in the gap. Though Mr Dasmunshi announced that the AIFF resolution was unanimous, Mr Anjan Mitra of the Indian Football Association (Calcutta) “neither opposed the resolution, nor supported it as he wanted to talk with his friends before appending his signature”. Mr Dasmunshi said except for treasurer A.R. Khaleel (who is nursing an injured leg) and Vice-President Praful Patel, all other members of the 18-strong executive were present, while the league committee was represented by Mr Ranjit Gupta of IFA, Mr P.P. Laxman of Kerala, Mr Joaquim Alemano of Goa, Mr G.S. Virk of Punjab, Mr Vali Mohammed of Western India Football Association and Mr Mohan Raj of Karnataka, which included representatives of Churchill Brothers and Mohun Bagan. The AIFF was apparently forced to convene the meeting as nine top clubs have come under the umbrella of the IPFA with Mallaya at the head, in a bid to run the National League in a professional and profitable manner. Mr Dasmunshi, however, claimed that “ending all the controversy, the AIFF family is fully united for the launch of the National League, and will wait only till the evening of December 4 for the 12 teams listed in the league to respond, and on December 5, the league schedule will be finalised”. Mr Dasmunshi said due to the improper coverage of the league on television, the federation had to incur losses as it has so far spent something to the tune of Rs 15 crore for the National League, though the AIFF got only Rs 75 lakh from the lead sponsor and Rs 30 lakh from the sub-sponsor in the inaugural year while the ratio for the subsequent three editions were Rs 1 crore-Rs 30 lakh, Rs 1 crore-Rs 20 lakh and Rs 1.8 crore-Rs 25 lakh. He said though the teams were paid only Rs 5 lakh each as appearance money, plus free travel, boarding, lodging, dearness allowance etc in the first edition, the money went up substantially in the subsequent editions, though in the fourth edition, the AIFF could meet only 50 per cent of the expenses due to sponsorship hassles, and the rest had to be pitched in by the associations. The AIFF president said he had two rounds of discussions with Mr Vijaya Mallaya but could not agree on one point — that of the AIFF conceding the television and sponsorship rights to the IPFA in lieu of proper compensation to the federation, “as we have entered into some contracts, from which we cannot get out at this stage, though we can
examine it from the sixth edition”. The IPFA also wanted recognition from the AIFF, for which it got a “firm no” from Mr Dasmunshi as he wanted to get the consent of the general house, before making any commitment in this regard. |
Record 17th Federation Cup title for USA LAS VEGAS, Nov 26 (AFP) — No Venus. No Serena. No Problem. Even without the Williams sisters and with second-ranked Lindsay Davenport nursing a sore right calf, the defending champion USA completed a 5-0 sweep of Spain here to win a record 17th Fed Cup women’s tennis title. Australian Open champion Davenport defeated fifth-ranked Conchita Martinez 6-2, 6-1, in a matchup of injured stars to clinch the best-of-five final after she and No. 4 Monica Seles had won Friday. “Especially without the Williamses, we were unsure a couple weeks ago,” said Davenport. “It made it a little harder without them so to win like that was nice.” US Open and Wimbledon winner Venus Williams, whose 35-match win streak was halted by Davenport last month, and sister Serena, who joined Venus for Olympic doubles gold, played in last year’s final, a 4-1 victory over Russia. Both cited injuries but US captain Billie Jean King was preparing players to do without them in early October. Seles and Davenport dominated anyway and the US won a third Cup in five years and avenged a 1998 semi-final loss to Spain. “It’s great to beat them again,” Seles said. “It can’t replace our loss in ’98 but we won and we will have many more chances to win.” Jennifer Capriati won 6-1, 1-0 when Spain’s Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario retired after 26 minutes due to illness and joined Lisa Raymond to beat Magui Serna and Virginia Ruano-Pascual 4-6, 6-4, 6-2 in doubles to complete the sweep. US Open and Wimbledon runner-up Davenport won the first set in 20 minutes over Martinez who was bothered by a sore right elbow and struggled in vain to serve effectively. “The way I was serving, there was pretty much no chance,” Martinez said. “When you don’t have a serve against Lindsay it’s a problem. It’s a handicap. I couldn’t even throw the ball up. It was difficult.” Spanish captain Miguel Marrgets said he never considered substituting Serna for Martinez, saying: “She had some pain but it was not something where she couldn’t play.” “Don’t make it a big deal,” Martinez said. “I usually play if it’s something like this. But it’s not the best. You’re not 100 per cent. It’s not good. You have to tough it out. You might win. You have to give it a chance.” French Open runner-up Martinez managed only 10 points in the first set but matched that total in the first game of the second set, a marathon 10-deuce encounter during which Davenport’s calf worsened. “Warming up, I felt it a little worse than the last few days and thought it could present a little bit of a problem,” she said. “The first set went fine. Luckily I was able to hold on.” Wimbledon and US Open runner-up Davenport traded break with Martinez before breaking her again in five points in the sixth and eighth games, smacking a forehand down-the-line winner to end the match after 57 minutes. “Even when she was hurt, I couldn’t return her serve,” Martinez said. “All I could do was try to keep it in and fight for every point. But she was hitting winners. I knew I had to move her. But how do you move Lindsay. She was hitting bombs.” Davenport swatted six aces and went 6-for-6 on break points in rising to 21-2 in Cup singles with her 15th consecutive Cup victory. But she was aided by Martinez’s own struggles. “She wasn’t doing much with the ball,” Davenport said. “It was just sitting there. She wasn’t forcing anything so that helped me a lot. Her serve wasn’t going that hard. I was able to hit a very offensive shot or a winner off that.” Martinez, 28, fell to 8-6 against Davenport, 24, and last for the fifth time in their past six meetings, including a Philadelphia semi-final two weeks ago. She was 1-of-11 on second-serve points and just 12-of-28 on first-serve points. |
Railways struggle to beat Bihar HYDERABAD, Nov 26 (UNI) — Former champions Indian Railways struggled to beat a travel-wary Bihar 2-1, while Hyderabad and Indo-Tibetan Border Police recorded an identical 2-0 wins, in the Group ‘A’ league matches of the 60th Senior National Hockey Championship here today. Railways despite undergoing a 40-day training camp at Amritsar looked rusty. Added to this they looked they were yet to recover from the shocking death of their former captain Anmol two weeks ago. Bihar, who reached here only this morning from Patna, began well and scored the opener in the 7th minute when centre forward Arvind Kumar put Bihar in the lead. Bracing themselves up Railways levelled in the 15th minute when inside right M. Ekka shot home the equaliser. The two teams were locked 1-1 at the lime break. Right back Anoop Tirkey scored the match winner converting a penalty corner with a rasping drive. In a fast paced match debutant ITBP registered a 2-0 victory over Andhra in the group ‘A’ league match of the 60th senior national hockey championship played at police hockey stadium, begumpet here today. ITBP who lost to Hyderabad 3-4 yesterday in their opening league match, played a different game as they called the shots and increased the pace of the match which Andhra lads could not cope with as they lacked stamina. In the 22nd minute of the first half Raghuveer Singh pushed the ball toward the Andhra’s goal which was going out but Praveen Tiru lunged forward and deflected the raising ball into the rival goal and put ITBP in 1-0 lead. Leading by a solitary first half goal the policemen came back with renewed vigour and raided the rival citadal but it was on in the 61st minute Praveen Tiru dribbled past a couple of Andhra defenders and shot at the goal which was cleared by goalie K. Ravi Chandra Prasad and the hawk eyed Kulwinder Singh made no mistake and scored the second goal. There after Andhra lads tried their best but their forward failed to hit the target. Scoring once in each session hosts Hyderabad scored a 2-0 victory over Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) in group ‘A’. Hyderabad, who earlier beat the ITBP 4-3, posted their second win in the six-team group today. The Hyderabad forward line combined well and played like a cohesive unit and they managed to score two goals once in each session. |
