Zimbabwe buckle under Indian attack AHMEDABAD, Dec 5 (PTI, UNI) — The target set by India proved too daunting for Zimbabwe who could manage only 245 for eight to give the hosts a 61-run victory and a 2-0 lead in the five-match one-day series here today. Captain Saurav Ganguly hit a magnificent 144 — his 16th hundred in limited overs cricket — which helped India to a huge total of 306 for five and Sridharan Sriram led the bowling onslaught claiming three wickets for 47 runs as India carved out a comfortable win. Andy Flower once again led the Zimbabwe fightback but his 51-run contribution was not enough when a real big innings was required from him and captain Heath Streak’s fighting 51 not out was too little and too late. After being set a stiff victory target of 307 at 6.14 runs per over, the Zimbabweans needed a good start. However, both India’s new ball bowlers Venkatesh Prasad and Zaheer Khan denied them the liberty, keeping a good line and length to help the openers Campbell and Marrillier in check. Marrillier, sensing that the asking rate was climbing, made a desperate attempt at Prasad, only in vain. He could manage only two runs. Stuart Carlisle, the next man, just could not get going, pottering around for 25 balls before he played down the wrong line to Zaheer to go down at a poor one. At this juncture, Zimbabwe were tottering at 35 for two, desperately in need of a solid innings by one of its batsmen. Zimbabwe’s main hope Andy Flower then joined Campbell on the crease, as they looked for repairing the early damage. However, with the pitch aiding spinners, Ganguly brought on Sachin as the first change. The latter reposed the faith of his captain by getting the prized wicket of the left-handed Campbell, whose edge at first slip was taken by Dravid who dived to his left to take a good catch. Campbell made 32 off 38 balls with four hits to the fence. Zimbabwe at this stage were three for 55. Soon after this, Grant Flower was consumed by Joshi as the latter tried a sweep shot to give a leading edge, which went directly to Yuvraj Singh in the gully. Grant made eight after facing 31 balls. The biggest blow for Zimbabwe came when Andy Flower, their last hope, gave a tame return catch to S. Sriram after making 51. The Zimbabweans, except for a few lusty blows by captain Heath Streak, who made 51 not out, ended up on 245 for eight to lose the second one-day after they lost at Cuttack. For India, Sriram took three wickets. Earlier, India, propelled by a superb century from skipper Ganguly (144), made a stiff 306 for five in their fifty overs. After the early loss of Tendulkar for just eight runs with the team total on 22, Ganguly and Dravid steadied the innings with some sensible batting. Both of them, without taking undue risks, kept the scoreboard moving with singles and twos. Ganguly was in sublime touch as he started off with a square cut in the first over of the innings off Olonga, which raced to the boundary. He then turned his attention to Streak, who came on as first change bowler, cover driving him for an equisite four and then lofting him over mid-on disdainfully for another boundary. Dravid then got into the act, pulling Streak through midwicket for a boundary to bring up the 5-run partnership between the two. Ganguly soon brought of his individual 50 with six boundaries and off 71 balls. He then broke loose after reaching his 50, clobbering the spinners all over the ground. He started off with a straight six of Murphy and then clobbered viljoen over midwicket for another six. Dravid also reached his 50, which came in 74 balls with three fours. Ganguly then reached his 16th one-day century in 128 balls with six boundaries and three huge sixes. His second 50 came in just 57 balls. Dravid, however, was run out soon after from a direct throw from Streak after Ganguly had sent him back. Dravid made 62 with three boundaries and along with Ganguly put on a mammoth 175-run partnership. After the fall of Dravid, Ganguly took on the bowling, hitting murphy for two huge sixes of consecutive balls and with Sunil Joshi playing cameo innings of 22 runs in 12 balls. India managed a whopping 110 runs in the last 10 overs. SCOREBOARD India: Tendulkar c A. Flower b Friend 8 Ganguly c Marillier b Viljoen 144 Dravid run out 62 Y. Singh c Streak b B. team NEW DELHI, Dec 5 — The apprisal report on the findings of investigation on the country-wide raids conducted at the premises of cricketers and others related to the game by the Income Tax Department is likely to be completed by this month end. “The reports on the findings of the countrywide raids are at the completion stage and is likely to be completed by month end,” Income Tax sources told The Tribune here today. In a countrywide swoop for two days beginning July 20, the Income Tax Department had raided simultaneously the premises of cricketers Kapil Dev, Mohammad Azharuddin, Ajay Jadeja, Manoj Prabhakar, Navjot Singh Sidhu and Ajay Sharma. According to sources, action will be initiated as per the provisions of IT Act after the assessment proceedings to assess undisclosed income covering a period of 10 years, ending with the month in which the search was completed. The IT officials had also conducted raids at the office and residential premises of former ICC President, Jagmohan Dalmia, BCCI treasurer Kishore Rungta, WorldTel chief Mark Mascarenhas and number of bookies including Mukesh Gupta, who was named by sacked South African captain Hansie Cronje, in a statement under oath before the King Commission of South Africa, as the person introduced by Azharuddin during a match in 1996. Meanwhile, Prabhakar and former Delhi captain Ajay Sharma have declined to talk to the visiting officials of the International Cricket Council (ICC) saying that they were not answerable to the international cricket body, sources said. The ICC team, comprising Allan Peacock, Martin Hawkins and Robert, had arrived here yesterday to question Indian cricketers indicted in the CBI match-fixing report as part of the international cricketing body’s efforts to go deep into the involvement of cricketers and its implications on the gentleman’s game. Although the ICC team is scheduled to question Mohammad Azharuddin, Ajay Jadeja, Nayan Mongia and Ali Irani, all implicated in the CBI report, there is a strong doubt on these players cooperating with them. Soon after their arrival in the capital, the ICC team had held meeting with the CBI investigating team led by Joint Director, Mr R.N. Sawani. This was their second meeting with the CBI team in less than a month. Hawkins and Peacock had visited New Delhi in early November and had left in three days after holding preliminary discussions with the CBI and Delhi Police in connection with the scandal.
‘Morarka building castles in air’ NEW DELHI, Dec 5 (PTI) — The CBI today termed as “unfortunate” reported comment of the BCCI Vice-President, Mr Kamal Morarka, that the agency’s report on cricket and match-fixing read like “a prostitute’s diary”.
Asked to comment on the statement, highly-placed CBI sources said: “It was unfortunate and uncalled for”. They said: “We have done our job upto the mark without any bias but it seems that such statements from him are to sheild someone.”
Asked whether the CBI was contemplating suing him for his reported allegation that the agency was the “most corrupt organisation”, they said “so far he has been building castles in air, let him name anyone as corrput...we will drag him to the court of law.” |
Cricket legend Colin Cowdrey dead LONDON, Dec 5 (AFP) — English cricketing great Colin Cowdrey has died after a long illness, the Press Association reported today. Former Kent and England captain Lord Cowdrey of Tonbridge, 67, had suffered a stroke in July. Cowdrey’s son Chris said the legendary batsman died at his home in the early hours, the Press Association reported. Chris Cowdrey, currently in Pakistan covering England’s tour for a radio station, said: “Obviously the whole family is deeply saddened by the news. It came as a great shock as he was recovering well from a recent stroke.” Lord Cowdrey was the fourth highest-scoring England player in Test history, with 7,264 runs from his 114 Tests, starting on the 1954/55 tour of Australia and finishing there 20 years later. He scored 22 Test centuries. He still held the Test record for the highest fourth wicket partnership with Peter May of 411, set against Australia in Sydney in 1946-47, and also finished with 107 first class hundreds to his name and 42,719 runs at an average of 44.82. He was also a reliable slip fielder taking 120 catches, a then Test record for a non-wicketkeeper. Lord Cowdrey had three sons by his first wife, Penny, two of whom played for Kent — Chris, who also played for England, and Graham. After a divorce he married Anne, a daughter of the Duke of Norfolk. |
Delhi crush
Himachal NEW DELHI, Dec 5 — A century on debut by opener Chetan Sharma was the highlight of Delhi’s eight-wicket victory against Himachal Pradesh in the North Zone Ranji Trophy One-Day Tournament at the Ferozeshah Kotla ground here today. Having won all their three league matches so far, Delhi along with Punjab, are in contention for the title. Himachal Pradesh, who won the toss and opted to bat, were shot out for 221 with Delhi captain Rahul Sanghvi claiming four for 34 and Amit Suman, making his debut, claiming two for 47. But for opener Rajeev Nayyar’s solid knock of 72, Himachal would have been in a worse plight. He kept one end going, even as wickets kept falling at the other end. Rahul Panta (20), Virender Sharma (37) and Ajay (36) were the other major contributors for the visitors. With a modest target to chase, the formidable Delhi did not have to encounter much of a problem as Chetan Sharma and Ashu Dani put on a blistering 168-run opening wicket partnership in 38.4 overs to knock the sail out of the Himachal bowling. After the exit of Chetan Sharma for 100 (174m, 130b, 11x4), Ashu Dani and Gautam Bambhir were involved in a fruitful second-wicket partnership of 46 runs that took Delhi to the door step of victory. When Dani was out for 86 (199m, 131b, 7x4), Delhi needed to complete only a formality to register a comfortable victory. Scoreboard Himachal Pradesh: Rahul Panta b Amit Suman 20, Rajeev Nayyar st. Khalifman awaits tie-breaker against Leko NEW DELHI, Dec 5 (UNI) — The men’s world champion Alexander Khalifman of Russia will have to come back for the tie-breaker tomorrow against Peter Leko of Hungary. But the women’s world champion Xie Jun earned herself a well-deserved rest day with a clear verdict over Elena Zayac of Russia on the second day of the third round in fide World Knockout Chess Champonships here today. Khalifman and Leko fought out a long draw in the second game. In what was seen as one of the toughest pairings for the third round, they agreed to a draw after 64 moves from a Sicilian Rossolimo. Leko had white but the tenacious Khalifman was not willing to let go off a crown he had won last year. But in the women’s section, Xie Jun, attempting to win the inaugural world knockout title for women, beat Elena Zayac in a good game. The game was a Spanish opening. The Chinese had another winner in Qin Kanying who moved past K Kachiani-Gersiinska of Germany with a draw in the second game. Qin had won the first game yesterday. But another Chinese player, Xu Yuhua, winner of the World Cup in Shenyang earlier this year, will have to go through the tie-breaker against Natalia Zhukova of Ukraine. They played out their second draw in as many days. Interestingly, Xu had beaten Zhukova in the World Cup final in Shenyang. The Chinese-born Peng Zhaoqin, who now plays under the Dutch flag, registered her second win in her match against Julia Demina of Russia and became the only woman player to score two wins in a match. Meanwhile, Peter Svidler fought back brilliantly to beat Peng Xiaomin in the second game of the third round and take the match into the tie-breaker. Yesterday, the 27-year-old Chinese Grandmaster had stunned the Russian, but today it was a different story. Svidler had white pieces and the game went into the Ruy Lopez and in the end game, the Russian was simply too good. He queened his passed pawn on d-file as Peng, with his knight pinned, watched helplessly. Once that was done, it was all over though the game continued till the 48th move. When the end came, Peng had a rook and two knights to his rivals queen, rook and bishop. Some of the day’s other winners were: Russian Alexy Dreev over the Dutchman Loek Van Wely; Russian Evegeny Bareev over Belarussian Aleksej Aleksandrov; and veteran American Boris Gulko over the higher rated Zurab Azmaiparashvili of Georgia. Dreev drew his second game against Van Wely in just 28 moves, while Bareev emerged as the only player to log two victories in the third round. Gulko (2643) warded off a great fight from the higher rated Azmaiparashvili (2673) in a 48-move game. Vladislav Tkachiev of France and Rustam Kasimdzhanov of Uzbekistan agreed to their second short draw. They played just 13 moves in the Kings Indian today and had played just 10 moves yesterday. Kasimdzhanov had black today. They will go into the tie-breaker. So will Sergei Movsesian of Czech Republic and Jaan Ehlvest of Estonia. After their first game draw, they had another one, this time in just 10 moves from a French defence. Another match to go into the tie-breaker will be Michael Adams and Alex Yermolinsky, who drew in 28 moves from a Sicilian Rossolimo. Rafael Leitao of Brazil put out the giant-killer of second round, Igor Nataf of France with a draw in the second game. They played just 23 moves from a Sicilian. Leitao had won the first game yesterday. Veselin Topalov completed his win over Bulgarian team-mate Kiril Georgiev with a draw in 36 moves from a Kings Indian game. Of the eight women’s matches, only two went into the tie-breaker. Apart from Xie Jun, Peng Zhaoqin and Qin Kanying, the other winners today included Corina Peptan of Romania, who drew the second game against Nana Ioseliani of Georgia to enter the fourth round. Alisa Maric of Yugoslavia beat Viktorija Cmilyte of Lithuania, the gold medallist on the top board in the Istanbul Olympiad in the second game and progressed to the fourth round. Alisa Galliamova of Russia was surprisingly beaten by Almira Skripchenko Lautier of Moldova in a Sicilian. Since Galliamova had won yesterday, the two will play the tie-breaker tomorrow. The only other pairing to come back for the tie-breaker will be Xu Yuhua of China and Natalia Zhukova of Ukraine. They drew both matches. |
AIFF, IPFA resolve differences NEW DELHI, Dec 5 (UNI) — The All-India Football Federation (AIFF) today caved-in to the pressure from the Indian Premier Football Association (IPFA) and hammered out what the AIFF supremo, Mr Priya Ranian Dasmunshi, termed as ‘solution of all
outstanding problems’. Speaking to the newsmen here this evening after a crucial meeting of the National Football League (NFL), a beaming Mr Dasmunshi displaying a victorious smile said “the representatives of both the IPFA and AIFF solved all the problems amicably in the greater interest of football and its admirers. On the agreed terms and conditions, he said the NFL would now commence from December 14 instead of December 10 and the first match would be between Mohun Bagan and JCT Phagwara at the Ambedkar Stadium here. Another resolution was formulating guidelines to determine the strength of each club and categorising its players in terms of professional and amateur from the sixth NFL. Mr Dasmunshi conceded the long standing demand of the clubs that they be accomodated in the marketing of the game and said “henceforth the clubs would be allowed to market the game”. He also conceded another key IPFA demand when he declared that it was agreed by both the parties that any surplus revenue generated in the NFL would be shared between them. Eighty per cent would go to the clubs while the remaining 20 per cent to the NFL. The AIFF supremo said to make the game more TV and spectator friendly, matches from now on would be conducted under floodlit stadiums but lamented that in places where there were no such stadium matches would have to be conducted at the behest of the local teams. He also announced that for quality production of football matches he would sign a package deal with any other TV channel apart from Doordarshan provided they extended a better bid. To induce transparency in the financial functioning of the AIFF, Mr Dasmunshi announced that henceforth a representative of one of the top club would be in the financial committee and would have the authority to sign cheques. This year Shivanand Salganocar of the Salgaocar Sports Club, Goa, will be the member of the committee. |
