Aussies record 12th win

PERTH, Dec 3 (AFP) — Steve Waugh’s Australian side set a new world record 12 successive Test wins here today when they thrashed the West Indies by an innings and 27 runs on the third day of the second Test at Perth’s WACA Ground.

It is the greatest winning sequence in the sport since Test cricket began 123 years ago, beating the 11 victories on the trot by Clive Lloyd’s champion Caribbean team of the mid-1980s.

The West Indies, ousted for 196 in the first innings, were skittled for 173 in the second after Australia hammered 396 in their knock.

The end came in front of a ecstatic crowd of 11,057 when express bowler Brett Lee trapped veteran tailender Courtney Walsh leg before wicket 19 minutes after tea.

Earlier in a dramatic final over, Lee snared Nixon McLean (11) and Marlon Black (0) to finish the innings with 5-61.

Immediately Walsh was dismissed, Australian players formed in a huddle on the field, congratulating each other.

Stumps were souvenired and players walked round the ground waving to the crowd.

The massive win, following a victory by an innings and 126 runs in the first Test in Brisbane eight days earlier, gives Australia a 2-0 lead and an apparent stranglehold on the five-match series.

Australia’s remarkable winning sequence under skipper Steve Waugh began in Zimbabwe where they won a one-off match in Harare 14 months ago.

This was followed by 3-0 clean sweeps over Pakistan and India in Australia last summer and a 3-0 whitewash of New Zealand there shortly after.

Australia equalled the old record in Brisbane and surpassed it with another irrepressible performance here which underlines the side’s claims as by far the best in current Test ranks.

There was early promise today of a stern fight by the West Indies as they resumed with 16 for two. Opening batsman Daren Ganga and left-hander Wavell Hinds kept out the Hungry Australian attack for 44 minutes.

Ganga fell to speedster Jason Gillespie for 20 when third slip Matthew Hayden pouched a superb diving catch.

But the crucial dismissal of the morning was that of champion batsman Brian Lara, bowled by leg-spinner Stuart MacGill for 17 as he attempted a pull through mid-wicket.

Lara fell to the rash shot after courageously surviving a ferocious assault by the Australian pace attack, led by Glenn McGrath, the man who dismissed him in his three previous Test failures on this tour. Lara made 0 and 4 in Brisbane and 0 in the first innings.

It was a memorable wicket for MacGill, the third in a line of first-class cricketers from his family to have snared a prize wicket in Perth.

His late grandfather, Charlie MacGill, dismissed Donald Bradman - regarded as the greatest batsman of all time - in a game for Western Australia in Perth before World War II, and his schoolteacher father, Terry MacGill, captured West Indies great Garfield Sobers in a match against a World Eleven at the WACA 29 years ago.

It was also MacGill who rattled Hinds’ stumps on the stroke of lunch to make the tourists a hopeless 95 for five.

Hinds, who hit a half century in the first innings, made 41 in almost two hours, with six thunderous boundaries.

The procession continued after lunch as fast bowler Brett Lee sent back the luckless Ramnaresh Sarwan (1), who now has three runs from four innings in the series.

Skipper Jimmy Adams, who finished with an unbeaten 40, and Ridley Jacobs (24) offered stern resistance in a 54-run stand before Jacobs was run out. However, the lower tail succumbed meekly once more.

Australia can get better: Waugh

PERTH, Dec 3 (AFP) — Australian cricket captain Steve Waugh today predicted his side, which set a new world record of 12 successive Test wins by beating the West Indies at the WACA Ground, can still improve.

“I think this is still the beginning and we can get better,” Waugh said after Australia had crushed the Windies by an innings and 27 runs shortly after tea today to take a 2-0 lead in the five-match series.

The 12 wins in a row is the greatest winning sequence in the sport since Test cricket began 123 years ago, beating the 11 victories on the trot by Clive Lloyd’s champion Caribbean team of the mid-1980s.

“We don’t want to take our foot off the accelerator now,” Waugh said. “We want to keep improving.

“You get the feeling among the side that it is a special team and we can really go places,” he said, adding the team get so much joy out of playing well and winning “that we don’t want to lose that feeling.”

He said the team had never set out to win 12 Tests in a row.

“We simply set a target to win the next Test we play, now that won’t change,” he said. “Now we have the opposition 2-0 down, we must fancy our chances of winning the next three.

“This was a really good professional win,” he said. “We are doing the job and doing the little things right and following our plans really well.”

“When that last West Indies wicket fell we felt something very special. Walking around the ground we sang out team song - and that is something we will take with us for the rest of our lives.”

Australia’s win was made all the sweeter because it was the first time the home country had beaten the West Indies here in six Test tussles between the sides.

It was the West Indies’ 15th loss in their past 17 away tests.

West Indies’ captain Jimmy Adams said he was sad Australian had beaten his side’s record.

Asked if Australia were the best team he had played against, Adams said: “They are playing a pretty high standard of cricket at the moment. You have to give them that. They are playing real pressure cricket, which is what it is all about.”

Adams admitted everyone in the West Indies’ camp was desperate for an away win.

“There are no two ways about it, but at the end of the day it comes down to making plans as you see them, getting everybody to follow them and trying to put it together in the pressure of Test match cricket.”

Anand held; Gelfand wins

NEW DELHI Dec 3 (UNI) — Viswanathan Anand was held to a draw with some solid play by Armenian grandmaster Smbat Lputian in the first game of the third round at the FIDE World Knock-out Chess Championships here today.

The Indian had black pieces and the game ended in just over two and half hours and only 19 moves were played. Clearly, the Indian was content to follow his plan of the previous round. He had taken a quick draw with black pieces against Viktor Bologan of Moldova and then crushed him in the second game with white pieces.

Tomorrow Anand will have white pieces and he would be the odds-on favourite to take the match. As the early results trickled in, Boris Gelfand of Israel beat Jeroen Piket, while Evgeny Bareev of Russia beat Belarussian Aleksej Aleksandrov. Both Gelfand and Bareev had white pieces.

They only need a draw to enter the fourth round. The women's world champion, Xie Jun also played out a draw in the first game.

BSF lift football title
From Amardeep Bhattal
Tribune News Service

KURALI, Dec 3-- Border Security Force, Jalandhar, overcame a spirited Punjab State Electricity Board challenge to emerge deserving winners in the 13th Master Mehar Singh Memorial Football Tournament which concluded at the Khalsa Senior Secondary School grounds here today. The two teams were level 1-1 at half-time.

After a cautious start, Border Security Force started dictating terms and took the lead midway through the first half when star striker Dharminder Singh's power-packed shot from inside the box gave PSEB custodian Jatinder Singh absolutely no chance. However, PSEB hit back through Sukhvir Singh shortly before the interval with the equaliser after medio Parminder Singh centred following a combined move on the left flank. The match winner came late in the second half through new recruit Sukhbir Singh's fine effort from the top of the box following a square pass from the left.

Border Security Force seem to have found their touch after a lacklustre showing in the previous season. Lack of quality strikers proved to be their bane in the National Football League last year. In the 22 matches that the team played in the NFL, they could score only nine goals before Indian Telephone Industries elbowed them out of the high-profile league. But in new recruit Dharminder Singh, BSF seem to have found their trump card. His lightning speed coupled with aggressiveness upfront makes him stand out from the rest. Along with Sukbir, also a new recruit from Mahilpur, Dharminder proved to be a constant threat to the rival teams here over the past few days.

Like yesterday, the promising striker was at his devastating best today, tearing down the flanks in rapid succession. PSEB, relying on experienced players like Manpreet Singh and Sandeep Saini did put up stiff resistance but the sturdy BSF defence, which also proved its mettle in the NFL last year, withstood the test with fortitude. In fact the midfield and defence have never been a problem with the security men.

The first goal for BSF which came in the 17th minute was partly due to a defensive lapse and the agile Dharminder after gaining control of the ball inside the box unleashed a powerful kick to bulge the net, giving the PSEB goalie little time to react.

PSEB launched a counter attack soon after but striker Sandeep Saini only managed to shoot straight at the BSF custodian Bibhas Saha. This was followed by a strong BSF offensive. After Dharminder failed to connect, the ball came to Harbinder but he only managed to despatch a feeble kick into the hands of Jatinder under the PSEB bar.

PSEB's sustained efforts eventually bore fruit in the 38th minute when midfielder Parminder centred and Sukhvir provided the finishing touches (1-1).

After the lemon break, BSF went all out to gain the upper hand. However ,they had to wait for a some time before new recruit Sukhbir Singh, finding himself in an enviable position at the top of the box following a square pass, unleashed a powerful kick with confidence to which the PSEB custodian had no answer.

PSEB did try to come back into the game with some quick attacks but the BSF defence proved impregnable.

Mr Ravi Inder Singh, MLA, and former Speaker in the Punjab Assembly, who was the chief guest, gave away the prizes. Among those present on the occasion were Sukhwinder Singh, national coach who is also coach of JCT Phagwara, and former international Parminder Singh.
