Tribune News Service

Bathinda, November 13
The rift between the policemen and lawyers over alleged misbehaviour by Civil Lines SHO Sikandar Singh is widening with the policemen seeking more time to solve the issue and lawyers planning to take up the issue with Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal.

Senior advocates JR Khattar, Gurwinder Mann, Rajan Garg, Guriqbal Chahal, Ashok Gupta and Bar Association president Mohinder Singh have condemned the SHO's behaviour and demanded to shift him to the Police Lines for using unpleasant language against advocates.

The SHO is also accused of releasing the arrested who were booked on a complaint of senior advocate Ved Parkash Singh Khurmi. Khurmi had got a case registered against tenants of his shop after they allegedly modified the shop, entered into a heated arguments with him and threatened of dire consequences. Khurmi said no initiative was taken by the police to sort out the differences so far.

The lawyers on Tuesday thronged the SSP office to protest against the SHO and demanded his suspension. They had demanded to arrest the accused for harassing and threatening Khurmi.

Khurmi is into a legal battle over the shop situated on the GT Road, which was rented out to the present tenants by his late father around 35 years ago. Khurmi claimed that the tenants paid a paltry sum of Rs 500 as rent.

The advocate said though some people contacted District Bar Association President Mohinder Sidhu over the issue and assured to help him in evicting the tenants and assured of apology by the SHO, the same could not be materialised. Khurmi said a meeting of the Bar Association was held today, wherein the issue was discussed and a meeting in this regard would take place held tomorrow. Khurmi said the members are now contemplating to meet the Chief Minister over the issue.

SP (Detective) Naveen Singla said the cases were being investigated by him. "We have sought more time from the lawyers for reconciliation and till then a report in connection with the modifications done on the footpath outside the shop had been sought from the Municipal Corporation. The ramp on which the construction has been done is under the jurisdiction of the MC and we are awaiting their reply," the SP said. Meanwhile, Khurmi expressed satisfaction as the police wrote to the MC and demanded the arrest of the accused.

City sees spurt in theft cases

Bathinda, November 13
With the policemen busy in providing security to VIPs visiting the city, the number of thefts in the city have increased manifolds. The deployment of recently recruited policemen and providing them 25 police PCR bikes at permanent points with increased patrolling hardly deter the thieves.

The residents who lost their vehicles blame the police that failed to nab the thieves.

However, the policemen in the city curse the existing system that helps thieves in getting bail within a few days after committing th crime.

Most of the vehicle-lifting cases have been reported at the Kotwali police station followed by the Civil Line, cantt, canal and thermal police stations.

The policemen at these police stations say two to three incidents of theft are reported every day.

Though SSP Ravcharan Brar claims to have nabbed six thieves, along with stolen motorbikes, jewellery and electronic gadgets recently, the lower-rung policemen regretted that all the arrested were now out on bail and were involved in heinous activities.

“We arrested a thief involved in more than a dozen cases. I was surprised to see the same thief roaming free in the Dhobi Market area, frowning and grimacing at me," said an SHO deployed in a city police station.

Gurtej Singh, investigating officer (IO) at the City Rampura police station, while investigating a case in which Rs 30,000 were stolen from a house in Bhunder Wali Gali in Rampura Mandi, said the police had got the finger prints from the house.

Harish Kumar, complainant in the case, said he had gone to Patiala along with his wife and the thieves stole the money after breaking the locks of their house.

On a question that how safe finger prints are, Gurtej Singh said, “ Finger prints are quite useful as these are sent to a police laboratory in Phillaur at Jalandhar where these are matched with the finger prints of thieves”.

He, however, added that though no finger prints matched in Bathinda so far, the efforts are always on to collect the finger prints and send the same to the laboratoryat Phillaur.

Ajaib Singh, another investigating officer at the Cantt police station, while investigating a case in which a laptop and a mobile phone worth Rs 25,000 was stolen from a house in Model Town, Phase I, said the thieves took away the material from the house while the house owner were asleep.

When asked how the police would nab the accused, he replied “Since the thieves took away the table along with the material lying on it, there is no point of taking finger prints of culprits.

Now, we will try to interrogate the accused to know if they have involvement in the crime."

SSP Ravcharan Brar said the policemen in the district were doing their best to nab thieves and numerous cases of theft had been solved in the past months.

Bathinda, November 13
Due to their determination, diet and treatment, these diabetics have won over the diabetes, a debilitating multi-factorial ailment. We talked to a number of people who are living a healthily life even after suffering from the disease with diabetes and have inspiring tales to tell. All of them are undergoing treatment at a private hospital. "My parents, teachers, friends know my diabetic status, 14-years-old student Simran Kataria from Gidderbaha says.

For her the life turned upside down when she was diagnosed with diabetes two years ago. "She was constantly losing weight. We got different tests conducted and she was diagnosed with diabetes type II," says her father Rakesh Kataria. Three months ago she was admitted to the ICU of Max Hospital in a serious condition and now walks her way to the hospital.

Simran is now on insulin injections that her father helps in taking daily. An intelligent student of Class IX, Simran says, "Insulin doses are fixed and I take care of my diet. I have now learned to live with it and even my teachers and classmates know about it."

Similarly, a Sub-Inspector with Punjab police, Narinder Singh from Barnala, was brought to diabetic consultant Dr Sushil Kotru on a stretcher. Gangrene had spread to his bone marrow and his right leg was require to be amputated. "Dr Kotru gave me 72 hours of time. Had my body not responded to treatment over 72 hours, my leg would have been amputated. I had lost all the hope and all major hospitals in Punjab refused to save my leg," she adds.

Narinder's right leg is now in bandages while his left feet has deep cuts, which may turn into ulcers in the absence of proper care. Narinder's case is one of the classic examples patient lose his or her limbs after developing gangrene. He remained on leave for around 18 months only to join four months ago. "Now, I take care for my feet more than my face," he says.

For 63-year-old Kiran Thakur, dealing with diabetes is akin to breathing. Every moment is being spent in taking correct measures, having proper diet and taking insulin injections on time. She was diagnosed with diabetes after having met with a major accident 12 years ago. "While undergoing treatment after mt accident, I was declared diabetic. Doctors told me that to survive proper diet, exercise and medicine was required. Due to the injuries, I could not exercise so I had to take medicine on time and took care of diet," she says.

It was her husband Sudarshan Thakur who assisted her for everything. From administering insulin doses to giving medicines, Sudarshan oversees all. "He makes me see the bright side of the life, I am alive because of his support," says Kiran.

in another case, 41-year-old Sukhdeep Kaur from Sangria, Hanumangarh, Haryana, has successfully controlled her blood sugar level with the help of insulin,. Earlier, she was scared of it. I was very sceptic of using insulin injections. People around me pitied that I have reached such a stage where insulin was needed. However, this turned out to be a myth. Today I take insulin and my blood sugar level is in check. I stress on wearing proper footwear so that I could not end up with gangrene or any other complication," she says. Whenever Sukhdeep visits her relatives, she carries the injection in an ice-box.

Having undergone bypass, 50-year-old Jaswinder Kaur from Jaito in Faridkot is now learning the trades of managing diabetes. She? has been a diabetic for the past one decade. She did not take any medicine but controlled her diet and refused sweets. "It was not enough, which we learned later. A year ago, I underwent a bypass surgery. But the rising blood sugar level threatened my well-being. I was told to insulin injections, but I did not know how to administer it," she says. Three weeks ago she learnt the right way and her sugar level have improved. "Though I still have a long way to go, the journey has at least begun," she says.

Having lost his parents to diabetes, it was wake up call for 37-year-old Muktsar resident Shyam Sunder. He was diagnosed with diabetes seven years ago. Suffering from type II diabetes, Shyam Sunder now understands the ramifications of it.

"I know that if I fail to manage the situation successfully, it would cost me dear. I may require repeated hospitalisations, if sugar level goes on increasing. Having a productive life ahead, I am now learning to manage with the disease," he says.

Bathinda, November 13
The National Green Tribunal (NGT) will provide a draft proposal to the Punjab Government for setting up of municipal solid waste treatment plants in the state. The NGT declared this while hearing the case of municipal solid waste treatment plants today.

Having clubbed five cases of treatment plants from the state, including that of Bathinda, the NGT was to discuss the proposal submitted by the Secretary (Local Bodies), Punjab. However, the secretary, being out of country, could not appear before the tribunal.

Kamal Kishore Yadav, Deputy Commissioner, Bathinda , who appeared before the NGT, said, “Since the competitive authority (Secretary) was not present for arguments, the bench stated that it would not discuss any issue. The next date for the hearing has been fixed for December 11.” said Yadav. The state government had submitted a detailed draft for operating the proposed five solid waste plants in the state.

Municipal Corporation, Bathinda (MCB), officials said the NGT’s proposal would largely consist of the proposal the government had submitted. The government will then have to respond to the ways in which the NGT’s proposal could be implemented.

Captain Mal Singh, a residents of Bhai Mati Dass Nagar, had filed an appeal in the NGT in 2012 requesting for not allowing the MCB to construct the garbage treatment plant at the proposed site on Mansa road where the city’s garbage is being dumped for the past three decades. The resident had opposed the plant that will collect garbage of 18 local bodies under the Bathinda cluster.

After several hearings, the NGT asked the Bathinda district administration to look for an alternative site for the plant.

However, the administration could not find a suitable site.

In the meantime, residents of four other cities in the state also moved to the NGT. Consequently, NGT clubbed all the five cases.
