Maur incident acquires political overtones
Bathinda, November 5 Accompanied by residents of the town, local BJP leaders today raised slogans against the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) during the visit of a senior SAD leader and Punjab Irrigation Minister Janmeja Singh Sekhon at the Max Hospital where Singla is undergoing treatment. Sekhon is the elected representative from Maur Mandi. BJP leaders lamented that had they been treated equally in the government, the SHO along with a police party would have surely prevented the attack on the BJP leader by the goons who were allegedly patronised by a senior political leader. The protesters termed the incident as an act of terrorism. However, Sekhon assured that he would extend all possible help to restore people's faith in the government and the police. "The party workers are certainly hurt with an assault on their district president in front of the SHO. Maur Mandi is a small town and both the attackers and the victim were known to the SHO who failed to act as the attackers were patronised by a politician," said Parminder Goyal, the district president of BJP (Urban). Goyal said the SHO's suspension and registration of a case were of no use until favouritism was routed out from the entire system. He said the BJP Yuva Morcha leader was beaten up with iron rods in the presence of the SHO, as he had objected to eve-teasing and hooliganism by the same boys even 10 days ago. Though Goyal initially expressed solidarity with Akali leaders, a section of local BJP leaders, pleading anonymity, admitted there was resentment among the BJP leaders for not getting equal respect in the police and the district administration circles on the behest of some Akali leaders. A case of attempt to murder, endangering life or personal safety of others, assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty, singing obscene song at public place, inflicting injuries using firearms and others was registered under Sections 307, 382, 336, 354, 294, 324, 323, 148 and 149 of the IPC and Sections 25, 27, 54 and 59 of the Arms Act at Maur police station. Those booked were Pawandeep Singh, Gursewak Singh, Rachhpal Singh, Kulwinder Singh, Happy Singh, Sukhi Singh, Kartar, Surjipal Singh, Gurpreet Singh, Harjeet Singh and four to five unidentified persons SHO Kulwinder Singh was booked for the similar offences at the police station of which he was the in-charge. Meanwhile, Sunil Singla BJP state media in-charge expressed displeasure over the lax attitude of the police and demanded stringent action against those who carried out the attack on Singla. Edu Min, MP meet victim
It is learnt that in the evening Education Minister Sikandar Singh Maluka too paid a visit at the Max Hospital to enquire about the well-being of the injured BJP leader. Bathinda MP Harsimrat Badal also met Singla at the hospital. Expressing solidarity with the BJP leaders, the MP rang up the SSP and demanded that the accused boys be arrested before 5 pm tomorrow. The BJP leaders expressed their anguish before the MP alleging that they were not getting due respect from the officials in the district administration and the police. |

Bathinda, November 5 The patient underwent surgery for the removal of the swollen glands at the Adesh Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (AIMSR). Assistant professor, Department of ENT, Dr Grace Budhiraja and Dr Vivek Mittal from the Department of Anaesthesia said the swelling in the neck is very common in north India due to the low consumption of iodine as well as hereditary causes. "But the swelling was big and the possibility of its being cancerous had to be examined. The patient reported to us with a huge swelling on October 25. He was having difficulty and pain while swallowing food and had a slight change in voice for the past one month. The swelling had been gradually increasing in size. It was firm and painless with no other signs of infection or pressure symptoms in the neck," she said. The patient was successfully operated upon wherein his voice nerve was preserved. Normally, in this part of the state, doctors seldom undertake a surgical procedure to remove such a huge gland swelling.
