MC to act against violators
Ludhiana, November 5
An illegal hoarding on a road in Ludhiana. The Ludhiana Municipal Corporation has decided to act against political, social and religious organisations installing illegal advertising boards in the city, The MC has convened a meeting of all district chiefs of political parties, social and religious organisations tomorrow to warn them against the illegal practice. Ever since the contract of advertising companies expired in June, the unipoles are blatantly being used by political parties.

Two die of dengue at CMCH 
Ludhiana, November 5
Two persons died of dengue at Christian Medical College and Hospital, Ludhiana. District epidemiologist Dr Anil Verma said: “The patients were admitted to Christian Medical College and Hospital. They died before Diwali, but we received the confirmation report from the hospital today.”

Gambling joint raided, 40 held
Ludhiana, November 5
The city police busted a gambling racket operating from a godown at the Vivek Nagar area of the city with the arrest of 40 persons. The arrested include Surinder Kumar, organiser of the gambling joint, and his relatives — Mohinder Pal, Harinder Kumar, Gulshan Kumar and Partik Kumar. The police said the accused claimed that they had a licence to run a casino.

Two arrested for raping minors 
Ludhiana, November 5
The police has booked Suraj Kumar, a resident of Gobindpura in the Division Number 7 area of the city, for allegedly raping his 14-year-old foster daughter.

SDO held for graft 
Ludhiana, November 5
Kuldeep Singh, sub-divisional officer (SDO) at the Punjab Pollution Control Board, was nabbed red-handed while accepting a bribe of Rs 40,000.

Factory was located in residential area, says MC
Ludhiana, November 5
The factory that was gutted in the Sekhewal area of the city is in the residential area, reveals the town planning scheme of the Ludhiana Municipal Corporation. The MC has ordered an inquiry as the factory was running illegally from the residential area.

Teenager goes on a rampage, damages vehicles
Ludhiana, November 5
A teenager went on a vehicle smashing spree on Sat Paul Mittal Road near the Sarabha Nagar market this evening. The police, however, did not register any case against him.

Farm varsity to commercialise technologies
Ludhiana, November 5
Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) has inked MoUs with AB Engineers, Ludhiana, and GlaxoSmithKline Consumer Healthcare Ltd (GSKCH), R and D Centre, Gurgaon, for the licensing of a fruit and vegetable washing machine and a honey heating-cum-filtration machine. Dr Baldev Singh Dhillon, PAU Vice-Chancellor, lauded the efforts of the PAU scientists in the development of innovative farm technologies.

Civic body jacks up revenue
Ludhiana, November 5
The Ludhiana Municipal Corporation has managed to generate a revenue of more than Rs 32 crore as regularisation and composition fee from the regularisation of plots, houses and buildings falling in unapproved or illegal colonies located within the municipal limits. On October 25, the last date for getting properties regularised was extended till November 5 and since then the MC has managed to generate only Rs 2 crore. Today being the last date, the MC generated a revenue of Rs 1.13 crore.

Training in dairy farming
Ludhiana, November 5
The department of veterinary and animal husbandry extension education, Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (GADVASU), Ludhiana, organised a week-long specialised training programmes on dairy farming in collaboration with the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD). Eighteen farmers attended the programme. RK Sharma, DGM State Bank of Patiala, Punjab, was the chief guest.

16 hone skills in radiology at vet varsity

The department of surgery and radiology in collaboration with the department of veterinary and animal husbandry extension education, Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (GADVASU), organised a week-long in-service training programme on 'Hands on Training in Radiology' for surgical specialists of the animal husbandry department, Punjab.

Parasailing becomes a hit at NCC camp

Parasailing was the latest addition to a slew of training activities already underway at the Air Squadron NCC Camp being held at JNV, Dhanansu. Selected cadets were on cloud nine when they were informed that they would be undertaking parasailing launch later in the day. The cadets had reasons to be very excited.

Government cooks rue giving of contract to private counterparts
Ludhiana, November 5
Cooks working under the Mid-Day Meal Scheme have expressed anguish over the state government's decision to give the contract of cooking of mid-day meals to their private counterparts at schools in Bathinda district from October1. Perturbed over the decision taken by the government, the cooks here said that the contractual system had already brought disrepute to the mid-day meal scheme as "sub-standard" food was provided to the students in government schools.

Murder case registered against 20 persons
Ludhiana, November 5
A day after two migrants were electrocuted at Chaudhary Colony near Sua Road, the police registered a case against 20 persons for murdering the youths by throwing them on live wires. The case has been registered on the complaint of Shatrugan, who owns the migrant quarters at Chaudhary Colony.The accused have been identified as Guddu, Ashish, Jay Chand, Vinod Kumar, Ravi Sharma and his 15 unidentified accomplices.The police has booked them for murder and house trespassing and started the investigation.
