City drainage plan may now see light of the day
Dehradun, October 18
The project had been in limbo as Dehradun Municipal Corporation (DMC), which was supposed to pay the consultant fee, kept delaying it and passed the buck to the state government. Later the government made both MDDA and DMC accountable for the consultant fee. The Delhi-based consultants spent almost a year's time in preparing the master drainage plan for the entire city. The implementation of the plan was stuck due to non-payment of fee. Initially MDDA paid Rs 20 lakh; now the MDDA officials have agreed to pay the remaining amount. They have put a condition that DMC will have to pay the amount as and when the project reaches the stage of implementation. Mayor Vinod Chamoli said:'' It was DMC which took initiative in pushing for the master drainage plan for the city. We will certainly pay for the development of the city. Rather I have asked for a funding of Rs 100 crore from the government so that DMC could pay the consultant fee as well as money to Jal Nigam, working agency, to start execution on the project. Besides, the corporation will also seek monetary assistance for the project under Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Scheme.'' Chamoli said the areas in the city such as GMS Road, Shastri Nagar, ISBT, etc which got submerged under water for being low-lying areas and places like Panditwari which had blocked the natural slopes for the water in the city and thus faced the scourge of flooding water in each monsoon would have a permanent solution of the problems for once and all. He said DMC was interested in supporting the drainage plan as it was the corporation which had to redress the problem of blockage of drains and water entering into residential colonies every year. |
