Chamunda Devi devotees forced to cancel pilgrimage
Tribune News Service

Haridwar, October 5
Devotees trying to offer obeisance at the revered temple of Mata Chamunda Devi were forced to cancel their pilgrimage due to heavy deployment of police and forest-park officers near Bilkeshwar Maha Dev Temple. They were stopped by the police who told them not to move further as the area fell in the protected Rajaji National Park.

Under aegis of Mata Chamunda Devi Bachao Samiti, saints and local devotees took out a religious kalash procession towards the hill terrain of Mata Chamunda Devi.

Range officer DPUniyal told devotees that at the said site of the temple, there is no temple but only a few statues which were put up there a few years back.

Citing strict national park rules, Uniyal urged devotees not to break the law and cooperate with the park authorities.

They added that unless they had legal permission from the Supreme Court in this regard, they could not be allowed to enter the park to pay obeisance at the shrine which forest officials termed as an open space.

“There were remains of a small temple only which were removed in 1983, when this forest cover came under Rajaji National Park protected periphery,'' said a forest official.

Aggrieved devotees reasoned that since the last several years they were being stopped at the very same place by park and police officials, but they just wanted to offer obeisance at the shrine place.

Saint Mahamandaleshwar Laxman Das argued that prior to 2005 they had been going on regular pilgrimages to the shrine and since the area came under Rajaji National Park, they had been forcibly stopped in the name of national park prohibition laws.

Mahant Shyam Giri of Mata Chamunda Devi Samiti said that at least on the occasion of the pious Navratri they should be allowed to visit the shrine site.

But due to heavy deployment of police force and regular talks by police-park officials, the devotees decided to hold the ritual at the stoppage point itself and distributed ‘prasad’ to the people and police personnel, too.

Inspector MS Negi said that some people try to mislead the common devotees about the shrine existence and mythological connection, which leads to this pilgrimage yatra on Navratras.

Some senior citizens stated that a decade back, statues and idols of deities were present at the said site in Bilb mountain and they used to go on a regular basis to offer prayers.

They also said that robber Sultana Daku, being Mata Chamunda Devi devotee, used to offer obeisance at the said place.

Host of TV serials, films being shot in Haridwar, Rishikesh

Haridwar, October 5
Despite the natural calamity of flash floods affecting normal life and tourism in Uttarkhand, the film-television fraternity seems to be putting the hill state again on the screen, giving the message to the world that normalcy is slowly returning to the region.

A host of television serial shootings and big Bollywood commercial budget shootings are currently going on in the state, particularly in the twin pilgrim cities of Haridwar-Rishikesh.

Recently an international reality show based on Italian production house had carried shooting out in Haridwar, and now a major television channel of Shri Adhikari Brothers , popularly known as SAB TV, is carrying out shootings of its various shows in Haridwar.

Currently, popular show in television ''Chidiya Ghar'' is being shot at various locales in Haridwar and Rishikesh.

Producers and actors of the show are quite in awe of the natural, spiritual and religious surroundings of the pilgrim city.

Shooting of the future episodes of this comedy show was done at Har-ki-Pauri, drawing attention of the pilgrims and local people in large numbers.

Enchanted by the atmosphere of the sanctum sanctorum, where Maha Kumbh fair is held every 12 years, the shooting crew said that they felt spiritually inclined while being in the city.

Noted film and TV artist Rajendra Gupta, who has to his credit films like Oscar nominee ''Lagaan,'' ''Raja ko rani se pyar ho gaya,'' ''Paan Singh Tomar'' and most famously in serial ''Nukkad'' as well as Pundit Jaganath in magnum opus ''Chandrakanta,'' feels Uttarakhand has been showered by nature with diverse beauty, and it is high time film TV producers explore this in the silver screen canvas.

Theatre artiste Jeetu Shiv Khare, who essays role of Gadha Prasad in the serial, says that he has been a regular visitor to Haridwar and feels blessed to be in the holy river Ganga city.

Khare also points that in upper reaches of Garhwal and Kumaon hills there are many unexplored locations and natural scenic spots that will bring refreshing colour to any Hindi movie.

On the obscene, vulgar and irrelevant shows being aired on small screen in name of reality, both Gupta and Khare feel that only healthy entertainment should be provided to the Indian viewers, as the entire family watches them together.

“Look at our comedy and light hearted shows, they are high on TRPs and drew audience in large numbers. The argument of these reality show makers that we only show what people want is totally rubbish.

See, we are showing good, healthy, humour comedy and people are taking it up with both hands. Viewers didn’t ask for such light hearted shows. But it is we only who showed them and they are liking it,'' said Khare.
