Cyclists’ safety goes off track
Chandigarh, October 5
A cycle track that caved in at Sector 33 Potholed and unlit cycle tracks are keeping the peddlers away from using these stretches. The tracks that were laid to ensure safety of cyclists have turned into dumping sites and parking lots. “The purpose of laying the tracks has been defeated. Accidents involving cyclists are on the rise in the city,” said a traffic police officer.

Youth arrested for stealing NRI’s bag
Mohali, October 5
The police has nabbed a youth accused of stealing a bag of and NRI from an auto-rickshaw at Zirakpur. The accused has been identified as Gaurav Verma, a resident of Amritsar. The victim, brother of former hockey player Avtar Singh Sohal, who represented Kenya in Olympics, lost his bag containing his passport and other documents when the accused took lift in the auto.

Traders deck up facade in Sec 17
Chandigarh, October 5
Following notices issued by the UT Estate Office, shopkeepers in Sector 17 have started restoring the facade of their properties by way of silicon treatment or by other means. Keeping in view the heritage status of Sector 17, the estate office has been issuing notices to the traders. Keeping in mind the architecture control, the traders had been asked to strictly comply with the norms.

UNESCO heritage status still a dream for UT admn

While the UT Administration has started celebrating the birthday of Le Corbusier, it has failed to achieve the prestigious UNESCO heritage status for the City Beautiful for the past many years.

Cops show scant regard to duty, shrine

Bansal shoots off letter to UT
Chandigarh, October 5
The local Member of Parliament, Pawan Kumar Bansal, has shot off a letter to the UT Administration seeking the minutes of the previous meeting held with the UT officials besides asking for another meeting to be held soon.

Generator sets sealed at city post offices
Chandigarh, October 5
The UT Estate Office today sealed over 11 unauthorised diesel-based generator sets at various post offices, including at the Sector 17 General Post Office (GPO). Other post offices include those at Sectors 18, 19, 20, 21, 26, 27, 30, 47, Mani Majra and the Industrial Area Phase 1. The action was initiated on the directions of the National Green Tribunal.

Get plots regularised by tomorrow or face legal action, says DC
Fatehgarh Sahib, October 5
In order to receive applications for the regularisation of illegal colonies and of the plot holders, Municipal Councils in the district will remain open on Sunday as well. The last date for the submission of application is October 7. Besides revenue officials have been directed to identify the illegal colonies in their respective areas and set up camp to create awareness.

Lok Adalat: 10 inmates set free
Ambala, October 5
As many as 10 inmates lodged in Ambala Central Jail, for past six to eight months for committing petty crimes, were acquitted by the Lok Adalat conducted today. Chief Judicial Magistrates (CJM) of Ambala AK Jain and Hemraj Mittal listened to as many as 41 cases and ordered to acquit 10 inmates on the spot.

12 taken ill after consuming adulterated flour in Ambala
Ambala, October 5
As many as 12 persons fell ill after consuming buckwheat flour (kuttu ka atta) in Ambala City. According to information, Sanjay Sharma and his wife Usha, both residents of Ambala City, were rushed to Trauma Center after they complained of diarrohea and vomiting. Sanjay said he had purchased the flour from a kariyana shop at Prem Nagar.

25 students get jobs

A campus placement and recruitment drive was held on the campus of Sri Sukhmani Institute of Engineering and Technology, Dera Bassi. Unit Nexus, having branch offices in Zirakpur, Chandigarh, and Gurgaon, visited the campus for placements and recruitment of candidates. HC lawyer gets into trouble

A designated senior lawyer of the Punjab and Haryana High Court has landed himself in the contempt loop. Taking note of his alleged "misbehaviour", the High Court today issued a show-cause notice, asking him as to why contempt of court proceedings be not issued against him.

Thieves decamp with cash, jewellery
Chandigarh, October 5
Mani Karan, a resident of Sector 22, reported that someone has stolen Rs 4,000, four gold rings and one gold chain from his house on October 4. A case has been registered at the Sector 17 police station.

Four rounded up in kidnapping case
Mohali, October 5
The police has rounded up four persons in connection with a case of kidnapping here on October 3. Sources said the suspects were being questioned but had not yet been formally arrested. Evidence was being collected in the case.

Three stabbed, robbed of cash
Chandigarh, October 5
Three pedestrians were stabbed and robbed of their mobile phones and cash by unknown assailants near the railway bridge at the Industrial Area Phase-II yesterday night. Satbir Singh, a resident of Raipur Khurd, said around four persons attacked him, besides Parkash and Naresh Kumar, while they were going to Raipur Khurd.
