Will get tough with violators of traffic rules, says new DGP Sidhu
Gaurav Talwar
Tribune News Service

Dehradun, October 2
Establishing a traffic system in the state in which no traffic violator can get away after violating traffic norms is one of my top and immediate priorities,'' said BS Sidhu, the newly appointed DGP of the state, while speaking exclusively to The Tribune.

''Presently, we do not have a system of following or chasing down a traffic violator after he jumps traffic light, overspeeds or violates some other traffic rule. We will try to establish such a traffic system in Uttarakhand which will work as a deterrent for the rule breakers,'' BS Sidhu told The Tribune.

Use of technology in streamlining the vehicular traffic and regulating the whole traffic system will be emphasised, said DGP BS Sidhu.

Speaking about the rise in criminal incidents in the state and especially in Dehradun, Sidhu promised swift action against perpetrators of crimes.

Making Government Railway Police (GRP) as independent unit is also in his mind, which according to him, comes at the last position in the district police priorities at present.

When asked about the increasing vacancies in the Police Department, he said that his focus would be on recruiting more sub-inspectors instead of constables, as the department has a sufficient number of constables and there is a severe shortage of sub-inspectors.

''We have already sent a number of officers we need to the public service commission,'' claimed Sidhu.

Talking about the his strategy to deal with the heinous nature of crimes, the 1979 batch IPS officer said: ''I have a plan of setting up homicide squad in the state, which will only deal with the heinous nature of crimes and will investigate crime in the most scientific manner. We will also upgrade our Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL),'' says new DGP BS Sidhu.

On the question of bringing revenue police areas under the jurisdiction of regular police, the DGP said that he is in favor of extending the regular police jurisdiction over the revenue police areas in the state, as the nature of crime has changed and there was a need to ensure effective police across the state.

On the illegal land-deal controversy in which Sidhu's name also figured and made headlines a few months ago, Sidhu said; ''I got a stay from the High Court in the matter and I have filed a complaint against those persons who tried to frame me in that case wrongly and I have done no wrong.''

It has been found that there is a problem of traffic congestion at some places, especially on Sundays, and we are chalking out a plan to deal with it.”

Purushottam said, “Gandhi facilitated freedom by walking the rigorous path of truth and non-violence. The history will always remember the will power and determination with which he spear-headed the non-cooperation movement. The way he united Indians with the Dandi March, only a great personality like him can achieve that.”

He said Gandhi was a man of truth and simplicity. He would exemplify his words by acting upon them himself first. Purushottam was of the view that the true tribute to Gandhi would be if everybody executed their responsibilities with dedication and honesty.

He suggested people to read Gandhi’s autobiography and contribute to society by following his ideals.

He also threw light on the life of Lal Bahudur Shastri and said he shook the nation with his famous slogan of “Jai Jawan, Jai Kisan”. Shastri was of the opinion that if our soldiers were strong, the borders of the nation would be strong. Similarly, if farmers were strong, the economy of the country would be strong, he added.

Joint Magistrate Ranjana Verma, ADM (Administration) Harak Singh Rawat, ADM (Finance) Jharna Kamthan, SDM Narayan Singh Dangi, City Magistrate Girish Chander Gunwant and other officials and employees of the collectorate were also present on the occasion.

Admn avoids unfurling Tricolour

Mussoorie: The birth anniversaries of Mahatma Gandhi and Lal Bahadur Shastri were celebrated with fervour in Mussoorie today. Ganesh Joshi, MLA, Mussoorie, along with municipal council president Manmohan Singh Mall and former Mussoorie MLA Jot Singh Gunsola paid homage to the Mahatma and former PM Shastri by garlanding their statues and offering floral tributes to the leaders near Gandhi Chowk today.

Students from a Hindi-medium school recited bhajans such as "Vaishnav Jan Ko" and "Raghupati Raghav Raja Ram" to mark the occasion. However, the municipal council and the local administration stayed away from the practice of unfurling the national flag at a public ceremony at Gandhi Chowk, fearing the repeat of the shameful August 15 incident where Mussoorie MLA Ganesh Joshi and MC president Manmohan Singh Mall had entered into a brawl over the hoisting of the national flag.

When contacted, Sonika, SDM, Mussoorie, said the function was organised by the municipal council she was unaware of the details of the function. Municipal council executive officer PS Rawat was seen hiding behind the fact that they had received clear instructions from the government to unfurl the Tricolour only at government installations and not at a public ceremony.

When questioned on the justification of unfurling the national flag at the same place in the past, PS Rawat said it was a wrong precedence that had been corrected this year.

Meanwhile, the two leaders renewed their pledge to stay away from violence and abstain from practising untouchability in accordance with the dreams of Mahatma Gandhi.

The ceremony ended without the singing of the National Anthem, much to the dejection of the schoolchildren who were assigned the job.

Meanwhile, students of Oak Grove, Ghananand Inter-College, Sanatan Dharam, Saraswati Shishu Mandir and other schools remembered the revered personalities by taking out a processions amid the chants of “Gandhiji, Shastriji amar rahen”. Mussoorie MLA Ganesh Joshi, former Mussoorie MLA Jot Singh Gunsola and MC President Manmohan Singh Mall remembering the two stalwarts, appealed to the gathering to follow the path shown by these leaders.
