Street vendors want 2011 policy implemented
Haridwar, September 25 Association members staged a protest at the Municipal Corporation office, prior to handing out a memorandum to Vipra Trivedi. District chief of the Laghu Vyapar Association Mahendra Saini said that the Municipal Corporation should take on priority basis the state street vendors' policy, as without this policy coming into effect, the interests and rights of the traders were getting affected. Divisional chief of the association Sanjay Chopra said that with this policy coming into effect, the Municipal Corporation will issue licences and identification cards to the vendors at separate vending zones ,which will provide them a legal identity. Citing 15 vending zones that have been conceptualised by the Municipal Corporation, Bhoopendra Rajput, treasurer of the Vendors' Association, said that almost two years have passed since the policy was drafted but delay in its implementation has only worsened the lives and trade of thousands of street vendors in the state. “Due to corruption prevalent in the MC and laxity shown by the previous civic body representatives, the policy is getting delayed. There are 5000 small-scale traders in Haridwar, whose interest needs to be protected at any cost,” said Chopra. Mukhay Nagar Adhikari Vipra Trivedi assured the small-scale traders' delegates of taking the issue and making sure the civic body looks after the interests of the vendors and hawkers. Special Pragya Puran camp begins in Haridwar
Haridwar, September 25 This was stated by Vedic experts, who have assembled at Gayatri Teerth Shantikunj, Haridwar, to attend the 10-day Pragya Puran camp, a special learning camp. At the inaugural session today, Akhil Vishwa Gayatri Parivar head Pranav Pandya said that Pragya Puran caters to all segments of society in very easy and refined language. “Though Pragya Puran comprises Vedic mantras, too, the practical, simple and interesting instances are depicted in such a way that they give directions to the common man and society. The need of the hour is to make sure in each family cultural and moral values remain imbibed, which Vedic literature easily does. So, more and more people should learn Vedic literature, particularly Pragya Puran in today’s time,'' said Pandya. Veteran Gayatri family member Kesari Kapil said that via such Vedic literature society as a whole is educated and guided. So holding such camps only adds to the reach and knowledge of the people. Vedic expert Namo Narayan Pandey urged sermon orators to focus on the need of adhering to Vedic guidelines by imbibing the traits in their personal life, rather than orating in the
sermon style only. Namo Narayan said it was more important for Vedic experts to give message via their morality, humanity, character and following the literature guidelines as people would themselves realise the significance of adhering to Vedic knowledge then. Coordinators of the Pragya Puran training camp said that on daily basis a total of six sessions would be held, which is being attended by Vedic experts, scholars and Gayatri family members from across the country. Religious sermon
experts Veereshwar Upadhyaya along with Gauri Shankar Sharma, OP Sharma,Shyam Bihari Dubey and Gayatri Kishore Trivedi among others will be lecturing in various sessions. |
Will the new DGP be Bhagat or Sidhu?
Dehradun, September 25 After the DPC, SK Bhagat, ADG, presently posted as Director of Vigilance in police headquarters will become Director General rank officer and will become eligible to be considered for the post of DGP of the state. According to the sources, he will be promoted to DG with effect from October 1. He will be second DG rank officer posted in the state after BS Sidhu, who is also a contender for the DGP's post, and presently holding the charge of Director General, Rules and Manuals/Prosecution, at police headquarters. It is to be noted that the present Director General of Police (DGP) Satyavrat Bansal is scheduled to retire on September 30. Interestingly, the DPC of SK Bhagat, 1982 batch officer, was scheduled to take place on September 27, as the present DGP was on leave, but today in an unprecedented move, the Home Department decided to go ahead with the DPC without the presence of DGP in the departmental promotion committee. Sources in the Police Department told The Tribune that the Home Department decided to prepone the DPC from September 27, considering that the present DGP might be out of town on that date as well and went ahead with the process
without him. Meanwhile, according to unconfirmed sources, BS Sidhu, a 1979 batch officer, is the front-runner for the coveted post and his name could be announced any time in the next couple of days as the new DGP of
the state. |

Delegates visit areas where greenery has been restored
Mussoorie, September 25 Major SS Negi informed the delegates that the Eco Task Force was raised under the aegis of Ministry of Environment and Forests and Ministry of Defence in conjunction with states on priority tasks for challenging assignments in the ecologically fragile and sensitive areas, such as Kyarkuli village in Mussoorie. The 127 Battalion, Dehradun, was set up on December 1, 1982, with the aim to control the process of ecological degradation of Shivalik hills and area around Mussoorie where continuous mining over the years had wreaked havoc on the flora and fauna of the region. The efforts of the Eco Task Force have paid rich dividends and the greenery has been restored in the area and the task force was still continuing the good work under the guidance of Col SS Jaggi in other areas of the state, added SS Negi. The DFO, Mussoorie, also highlighted the projects being undertaken in the area such as Shatra Dhara. He also said that it was important to preserve the area around Mussoorie as many perennial rivers catering to drinking needs of Dehradun flowed from the region. He said that after the restoration of the greenery in the area, the water level had risen to satisfactory level but much was to be done in the near future. Pandey also aired his concern on the erratic road construction and the dumping of mud debris in the rivers around Mussoorie, which could lead in depletion of the natural resources, thus leading to shortage of drinking water here. SR Reddy, Deputy Conservator, Forests, informed the media that the delegates were here to discuss forest influence on precipitation and micro-climate and forests as a source
of water. Eminent scholars, Sampurno Braynzeel from Amsterdam, AK Rana and Zhou Guang Yi commended the efforts of the Eco Task Force in restoring the area. |
Expert: India should focus more on experimental hydrology
Mussoorie, September 25 Two thoughts had emerged in the discussion. One section was of the view that if one planted more trees, it would result in loss of water as plants and trees will absorb the water for their growth, while the other section was of the view that if more trees are planted, it would result in more rainfall. Hence, more water will infiltrate in the soil and he believed that answer was somewhere in between and a balance was needed so that no harm comes to the stream flows and the environment. Speaking on the recent disaster, he said that a
system should be developed of better monitoring and better warning system and staying from building houses from near river banks. He also said that in Himalayas one required better forest management and one should avoid littering the mountains. Sampurno, being critical of India’s focus on hydrology, said that in comparison to Europe India was lagging far behind in experimental and observational hydrology since 1980s and there is lack of field observation and focus should be not on sitting behind the computer and looking at satellites. It could be misleading. “More filed study should be done and many centres to study hydrology should be developed,'' added
Sampurno. |
