Cong MLA Champion surrenders in firing incident case
Dehradun, September 21 There were not much options left for Champion, after being named by the Speaker of the assembly, Govind Singh Kunjwal, who was also present in the party, for the firing incident in which two Congress leaders were injured. Champion surrendered before the cantonment police after three days of hiding and was given on-the-spot bail. Reportedly, the police registered a case against unknown persons, as everyone present in the party refrained from naming the person who had fired the shots, except Kunjwal, who blamed Kunwar on Friday afternoon. By surrendering before the police, Champion has accepted the crime but there is not much doubt left that the police did everything to weaken the case and save him. “He got the bail because the case has been filed against unknown persons as the injured persons have not named anybody”, SP City, Jagdish Chandra, told The Tribune. On being asked whether the police would take the statement of Kunjwal, who had named Champion, the SP said, “we will go to the Speaker if the need arises but now Kunwar Pranav Singh has already surrendered.”? He added that the accused MLA would be called for questioning in the coming days to ascertain his role in the firing incident. The police has failed to recover important evidences like bullet shells and the weapon, which can prove to be most important to nail the culprit. |

British era food habits revealed in rare copy of 1946 Landour Cook Book
Mussoorie, September 21 The poetic description of the mince pie recipe in the rare copy the Landour Community Centre Cook Book published in 1946 which is still in tact with the local historian Gopal Bhardwaj reveals several facts about the food habits prevalent during the British era in Mussoorie and acted as inspiration for the food connoisseurs here. The rare copy of Landour Community Centre Cook Book, 1946 edition, was presented to eminent astrologer the late RGR Bhardwaj by a British lady Winifred Bibbra Broucke, the widow of William Whiffen, when she left for England in 1946. Later, the book was passed down to local historian Gopal Bhardwaj who happens to be the son of RGR Bhardwaj. Gopal Bhardwaj, describing about the history of the Landour Community Centre Cook Book, said that it is a food connoisseur’s delight with contributions for the recipes coming from American missionaries, staff of Woodstock School, namely Allen and Irene Parker. He further said that more is known about the history of the cook book from the blog written by Katherine (Kittu) Parker Riddle, the daughter of Allen and Irene Parker who attended Language School in Kellogg Church in 1919. In the blog written by Katherine Parker Riddle titled “The Landour Community Centre Cook books: From the 1920s to the 1960s,” she highlights that that her mother Irene joined with Mrs. Lucas, wife of Dr. Lucas, the Pastor, to form a reading club. This group urged her father, who became Principal of Woodstock School (1922-1939), to build a Community Centre. The Reading Club of Landour Community Centre held weekly meetings there and created a cook book, sharing favourite recipes and also giving guidance on substitutions for foods and flavors not available in Landour, and for cooking at high altitudes. In the 1930s, the Landour Community Centre became part of Woodstock School and it was during these days that the Landour Community Cook Book, an important reminder of Landour’s American connection, was first brought out through the impetus of Mrs RC Newton in 1930. Mrs Pitman was credited for typing MSS Landour 1930 on the first page of the book. It was emphasised as the book which belonged to the community. Bhardwaj further adds that the book was in such demand that the publishers, the Mussoorie Book Society, reprinted it in 1938. The third edition came out in 1946. The third edition in 1946 was revised by Mrs. Ruth E. Merian Beckdahl. The copy of this edition is still in tact with Gopal Bhardwaj although in somewhat tattered condition. Some of the contributors of this edition were Midge Aldrich with a recipe of apple pudding in page number 204. Marge Bales contributed with her recipe of papaya pickles in page number 130 and Esther Bonham contributed with the recipe for chicken spaghetti on page 77, chocolate dessert waffles page 210 and Christmas pudding page 198 to name a few. A revised edition of the Landour Community Centre Cook Book was brought out in 1964 by Katherine Kittu Parker and it was titled “The Landour Book of International Recipes” in which the illustrations were done by Magie Wilson. Since then several more editions of the book were published in 1969,1978,1985,1993 and 1996 of which some failed to give credit to the original version. Ganesh Saili and Ruskin Bond inspired by the earlier editions also came out with “Icing on the Landour Cake: ‘Old World Cake Recipes'' and ''The Landour Cook Book: Over Hundred Years of Hillside Cooking” in 2000 and 2001. |
