ASI to study engravings on walls, pillars of Kedarnath temple
Dehradun, September 29 The inscriptions serve as a primary documentary evidence to establish legal, socio-cultural, literary and archaeological history. “The ASI would be carrying out first-of-its-kind exercise of copying the engravings present on the pillars and walls of the temple. So, along with the draftsman and surveyor, an epigraphist would also be leaving for Kedarnath in a day or two for undertaking stamps of the engravings present on the pillars. The decipherment and interpretation of the inscriptions would help us in reconstructing the history and culture of that period,” said Atul Bhargava, Superintending Archaeologist, Dehradun Circle. The pillars in the sanctum sanctorum of the temple have been cleaned by using a chemical and by the end of October the ASI would be able to possess the complete copy of the inscriptions on the walls of the temple. However, it would take months for deciphering the inscriptions and translating them. The temple dates back to the eighth century AD. It not only survived being under the snow for 400 years but has also undergone expansion and renovation in phases between the 11th century and beyond. “But there is no authentic documentary evidence about the date when the temple was constructed. This exercise would help us in deciphering the date of the temple,” said Bhargava. For the conservation of the Latina-style temple, the central office of ASI has sanctioned Rs 2 crore. “Though in the 18th century a wooden parasol was placed atop the temple to protect it from snow and rain, rain water still managed to enter it through the several openings in the temple,” he said. He added that due to the rusting of iron clamps used to bind the joints, some stones had either expanded or dislodged. For providing strength to the building, water tightening treatment would be carried out. “Further, the mandap that has been sinking on the southern side would also require strengthening and levelling,” Bhargava said. |

Docs take to ayurveda route for treating dengue
Haridwar, September 29 Members of the Haridwar Citizen Council are spreading awareness on dengue and measures that one needs to take to prevent it. Council doctor Dr Vijay Verma said, “When we have ayurvedic and ‘panchkarma’, it is surprising to see that dengue patients are still being referred to district hospitals and medical centres.” Citing seven dengue patients that he has cured, including 25-year-old Meera, resident of Indra Basti, who was instantly shown doors by District Mela Hospital doctors when her platelet count reached 25,000. Due to her poor economic background, Meera, besides many others, were referred to Jolly Grant Hospital or Combined Medical Institute, Dehradun. “We treated these patients in a short span of time with ‘vasti’ medical procedure of ‘panchkarma’ and ayurveda,” he said. “Allopathic prescriptions only enhance medical bills and create doubts among people. The state government should opt for ayurvedic treatment and the Health Department should take measures to ensure that dengue virus does not breed. Massive cleaning-cum-awareness drive, regular fumigation and awareness about ayurvedic therapy for dengue should be propagated,” said Dr Verma. Social activist JP Baduni has also submitted a memorandum to the City Magistrate regarding dirty nullah flowing from the Lalta Rao bridge till the railway station that falls in the area that has been a major breeding ground of dengue virus in the city. Baduni said the choked nullah was responsible for various contagious diseases and both local residents and pilgrims were facing problem due to this. The council members also urged the Municipal Corporation to carry out a cleanliness drive in the city. |
Tiger project's implementation faces human interference
Dehradun, September 29 A study by the Wildlife Institute of India, Dehradun, on “Progress and problems in implementation of M-STrIPES’, has revealed that the major problem encountering in its implementation is that illegal activities are not being reported properly. “Forest guards in all seven tiger reserves are reluctant to record and report this data,” said K Ashok Kumar, a researcher. The Dehradun-based WII had come up with a technology-aided monitoring mechanism for tigers an year ago and identified seven tiger reserves in the country to implement it as a pilot project. Named M-STrIPes (Monitoring system for Tigers Intensive Patrolling and Ecological Status), the software was meant to keep a track on patrolling movements and help identify vulnerable points in the protected area. It was proposed as a programme to amalgamate research, field survey and conservation policies. The implementation of MSTrIPES has four components starting from field training to data collection followed by data entry and storage and finally the analysis and the interpretation of the data to get the results. Interestingly, there has been a question mark on the commitment of the forest authorities across the country to genuinely report illegal activities in the forests. According to K Ashok Kumar, a major change in the attitude and culture of the ground staff is required and this can be achieved by incentive-driven trust building by the senior management of the tiger reserve. The WII has provided training to 727 employees in various reserves regarding the data collection in different parks, besides forest department officials. But any effort on the part of the wildlife authorities in various states, where these reserves are located, have failed to bring about the change in the attitude of their respective ground

BJP workers in Haridwar lambast Cong-led govts
Haridwar, September 29 Local BJP workers led by city legislator Madan Kaushik through pamphlets and posters highlighted the mistakes, scams and poor governance provided by the Congress both at the Centre and in the state. The BJP workers highlighted the failure of Chief Minister Vijay Bahuguna in handling the situation arising out of the natural disaster and the relief and rehabilitation works. They said the state government was spending lakhs of rupees on advertisements to claim successful handling of the situation while bodies were being still recovered in the Kedarnath valley. Kaushik urged the people to think before they vote in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections as the Congress had failed in all fronts of governance both at the Centre and in the state. “The Congress has created a new record in corruption with scams like the Adarsh Housing Society, 2-G, Commonwealth, Augusta Westland VIP helicopter and coal block allotment coming to light. The rising inflation and low economic growth have exposed its failure on the governance front,” he said. “Like the UPA government at the Centre the Congress-led government in the state is catering only to the rich, builders and the quarrying mafia. Even land allocated for the Tehri dam evacuees is being misused due to a nexus between Congress ministers and bureaucrats,” alleged Kaushik, a three-time city legislator. Kaushik also spoke about good governance provided by former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee-led NDA government at the Centre and the BJP government in Uttarakhand led by Chief Ministers BC Khanduri and Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank. He added that in comparison to the BJP governments, the Union government headed by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and the state government headed by Vijay Bahuguna had failed to provide good governance. District BJP unit head Kuldeep Gupta and women unit head Sanjana Sharma said the party activists were carrying the message to the public and hoped that the party would win all five parliamentary seats in Uttarakhand in the next Lok Sabha elections. |
