Cop, 5 protesters hurt in clash
Jammu, October 3 The police allegedly used force to disperse the agitators, following which the protesters resorted to stone-throwing. Sarwal police post in charge Sachinder Pal Singh and five protesters, including two women, received injuries during the incident. Meanwhile, the traffic was suspended for an hour due to the road blockade. On August 11, the body of Rajinder Kumar was found in a drain at Mana Basti near Tali Morh, Janipura. The police had initiated inquest proceedings into the incident and registered a case under Section 174 of the CrPC. The incident had sparked off a protest in the locality with the deceased's family members and others demanding a proper investigation and registering of a murder case. On the assurance of the administration, they had called off their protest. These people assembled on the road this morning to protest against the failure of the police to book the "culprits". Senior police officers rushed to the spot and asked the
protesters to lift their dharna so that the vehicular movement could be restored, triggering
a clash. Family members of the deceased alleged that the police had used unnecessary force against people who were protesting peacefully. "Police personnel lifted us forcibly and used abusive language against women. They are trying to shield the accused," alleged a family member of the deceased. However SHO, Bakshi Nagar, Dalip Singh said, "While we were trying to pacify them, suddenly someone from the protesters hurled a stone, which hit Sarwal police post in charge Sachinder Singh on his face, leaving him in pool of blood." "We have almost completed the investigation. These people should not have taken the path of violence. Justice would be ensured in the case," he said. |

SPCB fails to equip its labs with requisite equipment
Jammu, October 3 For reliable tests, the samples are still being sent to other laboratories. This has raised a question mark over the seriousness of the state government's policy to check the rising level of pollution, particularly in urban areas. The SPCB sends most of the samples to the Central Pollution Control Board, New Delhi, and the Jammu unit of the Indian Institute of Integrative Medicine, which delays the process of analysis. Pesticide units, recycling units of metals, battery units, pharmaceutical factories, paper and pulp factories, steel rolling mills, paint factories, ink factories, chemical factories, oil factories, petroleum factories form the main source of pollution of water bodies in the state. SPCB chairman Arun Tikku said, “We have started implementing a plan to modernise our laboratories. New equipment is being procured. We have some deficiencies but they are being rectified with the help of the government.” Sources said the SPCB had constituted by the state government in 1986 as per the provisions of the Water (Prevention & Control of Pollution) Act-1974 and the Air (Prevention & Control of Pollution) Act-1981. However, it was a matter of concern that it still did not have the required equipment at its disposal, he said. He said as far as air pollution was concerned, new stations had been set at Khrew Khonmoh, Lasjan and Rajbagh in Kashmir and at Narwal, Jewel Chowk, Bari Brahmana, Kathua and the Samba industrial estate in the Jammu region. |
