A 29-year-old woman was killed allegedly by three unknown assailants who strangled her with a wire and then kidnapped her three-year-old son in east Delhi’s Mayur Vihar area this afternoon. The deceased has been identified as Mahee. According to the police, the incident took place in her house in Mayur Vihar. The police were informed about the incident at about 12 pm. Investigators suspect her family members to be involved as she had a love marriage and her brother was against it.

On Saturday afternoon, Mahee was in her house with her son, Ishu and her maid, Veena, according to the police.

Three persons arrived on a motorcycle outside her residence. Two of them entered the house, while the third one was waiting for them outside. Veena opened the door and they held her hostage at gunpoint.

“The accused had an argument with the deceased. They strangled her with a wire. They fled away on the motorcycle with her son,” said a police officer.

Veena shouted for help and neighbours gathered at the spot. Police were informed of the incident and a team was sent to the house.

The officer said the assailants robbed jewellery from the house before fleeing.  “Her husband Iman, who runs a shop of readymade garments in the area, was not at home when the incident occurred. Iman got married to Mahee around four years ago and since then they had been living in the area.” said the police officer.

According to him, her husband earlier ran a mobile accessories shop in the area. “We have recorded Veena’s statement and lodged an FIR of murder, robbery and kidnapping,” said the police officer.

The police said they have identified the main accused as Vishal, alias Vishu, and the three others are juveniles. The police said they have apprehended a juvenile in connection with the case. “Vishal proposed a girl of Bankner village several times and she always spurned his advances. Vishal became aware that the girl was having an affair with Pradeep. Vishal decided to kill him. He roped in his three juvenile friends. They called Pradeep at an isolated place in the village and stabbed him to death,” said a police officer.

In the second incident, a 22-year-old youth was stoned to death allegedly by four people in east Delhi’s Mayur Vihar area. The police have caught the four accused, including three juveniles. The main accused has been identified as Deepak, alias Raj.

The deceased was identified as Ravi Kumar, alias Chhotu, a resident of the area. He worked with a private firm.

“Ravi was having an affair with the Deepak’s sister. He decided to teach Ravi a lesson. On Friday night, Deepak with his three juvenile friends called Ravi to discuss the issue. They had an argument following which Deepak and his three friends thrashed Ravi. They then stoned him to death and fled the area,” said another police officer.

The police became aware of the incident when a passerby saw a body near a mall in Mayur Vihar Phase-one. A police team was sent to the spot and the body was sent for a postmortem.

More collaboration needed in education sector: Raju

New Delhi, August 24
On the occasion of the Twelfth Darbari Seth Memorial Lecture hosted by the Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) here, HRD Minister M.M. Pallam Raju and Advisor to the Prime Minister S. Ramadorai stressed the need to leverage emerging technologies to broad base education and especially the areas that have a long-term impact on sustainable development.

Towards this end, the Government of India has ensured that the basic elements of sustainable development be included in school syllabi and at higher education level, the government in collaboration with UNESCO has established the first ‘category one’ institute in all of Asia named “Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Education for Peace and Sustainable Development”, said the minister while presiding over the event.

“The government accords high priority to education for sustainable development and in this direction, the institute has been set up recently, and he would like to see more collaboration between all such institutions world-wide,” he stated.

“The state of environment is a reminder of what we as humans are actually inflicting on nature. At the same time, it also gives us the opportunity at hand to reverse the process of environmental decline and work for the present and a future built on the principles of environmental justice, equity and human development. In this regard, the role of education is critical as it is the cornerstone of a modern society,” said the minister.

Reducing child mortality rate stressed
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, August 24
While addressing a conference on ‘Combating Child Malnutrition: Sharing of Best Practices’, Deputy Commissioner (Child Health), Ministry of Health, Dr. Sila Deb said the Ministry of Health is focusing on capacity building for healthcare providers. For severely malnourished children, the government has set up nutrition centres, she said.

Though the child mortality rate in India has been declining over the last few years, there is a growing concern that the decline is not fast enough to achieve Millennium Development Goals, Deb said.

Emphasising the importance of breast feeding, she said, “Mother’s milk is the best food for a child who is below six months. It has all the essential nutrients that a child needs at the tender age and it significantly strengthens the child’s immune system as well.”

And as undernourishment stands as the major cause for high infant mortality rate (IMR), resulting in growth retardation and impaired development in the country, the government has allocated budget to all the states and UTs to fight child malnutrition and provide nutritious food to children and women, Dr Deb noted.

“Child mortality is a critical indicator of a country’s socio-economic development. So, reducing IMR is an area of concern and is reflected in the government’s policy and programmes.,” she added.

DSGMC chief meets Bassi, seeks probe into Tilak Nagar clash

New Delhi, August 24
In the matter of two groups—Sikhs and residents of Harijan Colony—clashing at Tilak Nagar on August 15, the Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee president Manjit Singh GK today met the Delhi Police Commissioner BS Bassi urging him for an early probe into the incident and stringent action against the erring police officials.

It is amply clear that the incident was a pre-planned conspiracy against the Sikh community, Manjit said while demanding that the SHO be suspended.

Amid several versions of what triggered the violence in which 27 people, including five policemen, were injured, according to Manjit, the local police failed to initiate timely action and instead resorted to firing and use of teargas shells.

“The attitude of the SHO of the police station was against the members of the Sikh community and many members of the community were hurt in the clash due to direct firing by the cops even as the police claims that it fired in the air to control the mob,” he wrote in a letter addressed to the commissioner.
