BJP sells onion at Rs 25 kg at Town Hall
Party to stage demonstrations to tell people the ‘real’ reason for rising prices
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, August 18
Eyeing an early general election in 2014, the Delhi BJP has resorted to a novel idea of protest against increase in onion prices. In contrast to the onion rate of Rs 50 per kg that the Congress is selling at various outlets across the city, the BJP today sold onion at Rs 25 per kg at Town Hall, Chandni Chowk. The party accused the Congress of blackmarketing onion, thus ripping into the pockets of common man.

The BJP has decided to stage demonstrations to reach out to the people and tell them the real reason behind the rising onion prices. The BJP has alleged that prices of onion in khudra market are very low and that the prices have been multiplied using illegitimate means.

Accusing the Delhi Government of "inaction" in controlling the price of the vegetable, Delhi BJP president Vijay Goel demanded immediate removal of Food and Civil Supplies Minister Harun Yusuf for his "complete failure to regulate the wholesale vegetable markets and take action against hoarders.

Taking a swipe at the Chief Minister, Sheila Dikshit, BJP leaders have alleged that the UPA-led government had not done enough to control the price rise. The BJP in a bid to gain visibility among the people in the state has decided to put forth the issue of onion prices in the forthcoming Delhi Assembly election.

"It is appalling the way the Delhi Government first mismanaged the onion crisis and now expressing its helplessness to control prices. This is typical of this government which has been expressing helplessness on every front be it price rise, hike in power tariffs, collapse of water supply, lack of development in unauthorised colonies and JJ clusters, growing crime against women," said Vijay Goel, Delhi BJP president.

Incidentally, the BJP was voted out of power in 1998 in Delhi following spiralling onion prices. The assembly polls in Delhi are slated for November.

New Delhi, August 18
In view of high ridership observed on the eve of Raksha Bandhan and the day itself for the past few years, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has decided to run around 300 extra train trips on August 19 and 20.

Additional security personnel will also be deployed to cater to the rush of commuters expected on these two days, a DMRC spokesperson said.

"Trains will be run at peak-hour frequency from 8 am to 8.30 pm on August 19 and 20 and trains which are normally withdrawn from lines during off peak hours (ie 11.30 am to 4.30 pm) will be kept in service to perform around 300 extra trips, making a total of about 2,900 trips on that day," the spokesperson added.

The DMRC will also deploy additional security guards and customer facilitation agents at major Metro stations to help and guide commuters on these two days.

The prominent stations to have extra deployment are Dilshad Garden, Shahdara, Welcome, Seelampur, Shastri Park, Pitampura, Rohini East, Rohini West, Rithala, Jahangir Puri, Adarsh Nagar, GTB Nagar, Yamuna Bank, Uttam Nagar East, Nawada, Noida City Centre, Botanical Garden, Noida Sector 18, MG Road, HUDA City Centre, Sarita Vihar, Lajpat Nagr, Badarpur, Peeragarhi, Nangloi and Mundka.

"In addition, extra personnel will be deployed to handle the increased load on the ticketing system and the Metro ticketing staff in 75 stations will do 123 additional shifts," the official said.

The Delhi Metro normally witnesses greater rush of commuters on the eve of Raksha Bandhan. In 2012, over 22 lakh passengers travelled on a day before Raksha Bandhan by Metros whereas close to 20 lakh travelled on the day of Raksha Bandhan.

At present, the Metro ridership has already increased substantially as the Metro carried over 25 lakh passengers for the first time ever on August 8.

Free ride for women on DTC buses

The Delhi Government today said that the Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) will provide free ride to women in its buses on Raksha Bandhan.

"The decision has been taken to provide safe, comfortable and convenient ride to women," said a senior government official.

The lady passengers will be allowed free travelling in DTC non-AC buses and cluster buses which are operating within Delhi or destined to towns within the National Capital Region (NCR) between 8 am and 5 pm on August 20. This facility will not be available in AC and inter-state buses which are destined to the towns beyond NCR.

Keeping in view the expected heavy rush of commuters on this day, the DTC has also decided to deploy its all buses and cluster buses on roads for the convenience of passengers.

Lifestyle, work pressure causing brain hemorrhage among youth

New Delhi, August 18
Lifestyle, mounting work pressure and over-ambition are leading to increasing cases of brain hemorrhage among the 20-30 age group, doctors say. According to Dr K B Shankar, assistant professor of neurosurgery at Safdarjung Hospital, brain strokes were earlier noticed in the elderly age group with high blood pressure and diabetes being the main causes.

"But recently there have been increasing cases of patients with brain hemorrhages at an early age primarily because of the lifestyle that we follow," Shankar said.

He says incidents of strokes annually in India is 100-150 per 1,00,000 people, according to an epidemiological survey. This amounts to 1-1.5 million new cases of strokes, of which 15-20 per cent occur in patients aged less than 30 years.

Shankar lists high level stress, work pressure, irregular work patterns, competitive environment, lack of good sleep, unhealthy and untimely eating habits, lack of exercise and genetic factors as causes of brain strokes.

"All these ultimately lead to hypertension and diabetes at an early age that causes brain strokes," he says.

Backing Shankar's view, Dr Vikas Dikhav, a senior research officer in the department of neurology at Ram Manohar Lohiya Hospital, says hypertension is the main cause of bleeding in the brain.

Narrating a recent case, he says a 22-year-old man, preparing for a top competitive entrance exam, was admitted to the hospital with severe grade hypertension and headache in the occipital area in a semi-conscious state.

"CT scan showed a large bleeding spot in basal ganglia area (a region at the base of the brain responsible for involuntary movements such as tremors, athetosis, and chorea). He had to be conservatively managed for weeks, then only his blood pressure could be stabilised. Patient still has weakness on one side of the body," Dikhav says. — PTI

Is somebody hearing? City's homeless women are crying!

New Delhi, August 18
Poverty translates into neglect, vulnerability and exploitation of all kinds and considering Delhi where at least 1.5 lakh homeless people, a conservative official estimate with 10 per cent being women alone, battle each day for survival, the government has enough on its plate.

The situation worsens in case of homeless children or single destitute women, a majority of whom having escaped the violence or torture in parents' or in-laws' house and currently living on the city's unfriendly streets only to face routine abuse, both verbal and sexual.

In her struggle for existence on the platforms at New Delhi Railway Station and Old Delhi Railway Station near Kashmiri Gate, Sharda Sharma (42), who escaped an abusive marriage to reach Delhi with her three-month-old daughter around 22 years ago, witnessed all this and more.

Starting from being cheated by a jeweller whom she sold her gold necklace (the only possession she carried) to look after her baby, listening to lewd remarks by passersby and contractor to being victimised by the policemen who allegedly demanded sexual favours in return for allowing her to stay there, she now has no strength to resent but relent.

"Living on the platform with a baby was not easy. I have been abused and harassed by the police who would not let me sit or sleep anywhere. They allowed me to stay back but on one condition of making them happy and for the sake of my child, I had to give in to their demands," she said.

Sharda's case is not an isolated one as hundreds of such homeless women many of whose heartrending testimonies came to the fore during a recent public hearing organised by Shahri Adhikar Manch Begharon ke Saath, have been battling it day in and out just to earn a living.

Like 50 homeless women residing in the park opposite Nizamuddin Dargah, Kulsum, who moved to Delhi more than 15 years ago with her four little children from Assam, has no other option than to ask for alms outside the mosque and thus lives in fear of harassment by the police.

The same is the case with Poonam (30), the sole earning member of a family of seven members in the Kalkaji Mandir area. "I sell corn on the streets and the police come and ask for bribe. I don't have money so they regularly dismantle the shop," she said.

With very little to hope, most of these hapless women are left to fend for themselves living in deplorable conditions, with hardly any access to healthcare, sanitation and drinking water. The lack of public toilets adds to their problems, forcing them to have a bath and defecate in the open.

"In Delhi, the callous administration doesn't take care of its poor and even there are a few shelters, they are far from habitable. Homeless women have to invariably pay to use the toilets every time and at night, the caretaker shuts them. Despite being under court monitoring, there is no proper system to ensure coordination. Whose interests is the government serving with women unable to access to even the basic facilities?" asked Director of Business and Community Foundation and legal activist Amita V Joseph.

In Delhi, there are five shelters for homeless women, two temporary and three permanent, that house nearly 200 and most of these are located on the outskirts of the city.
