DTC bus mows down woman, injures three
New Delhi, August 10 According to the police, the driver had mistakenly accelerated the bus, instead of applying the brakes at the bus stand. The deceased has been identified as Jyoti, a resident of Trilokpuri. Rajesh Kumar (30), Mahender Singh (59) and Halke (24), who were injured in the accident, underwent treatment at Lal Bahadur Shastri Hospital. A police officer said a low-floor DTC bus heading towards Karkari Mor was stopped by DTC ticket-checking staff, when it was hit by another bus from the rear about 8 am. "Jyoti was standing on the footpath and was crushed by the bus. The bus then collided with a Maruti 800 car parked near the footpath and hit an electricity pole. The pole fell upon impact and crashed on the bus, due to which three passengers were injured," said the officer. A traffic police officer called the PCR van. The injured were taken to LBS Hospital, where Jyoti was declared dead. The remaining three were discharged after receiving first-aid. The bus driver was arrested on the spot and a case has been filed at the Shakarpur police station. He has been identified as Joginder (33), who hails from Rohtak district, Haryana. He has been booked for rash driving and causing death by negligence under the Indian Penal Code. |
Tihar inmate found dead under mysterious circumstances
New Delhi, August 10 The jail authorities have informed the police and a local court about Nadeem's death. The reason behind the death is yet to be ascertained. "Nadeem was unresponsive in his cell in jail number two. He was declared dead at Deen Dayal Upadhyay Hospital. Initial investigation has revealed that Nadeem purportedly committed suicide by consuming poison. “However, we are waiting for the post-mortem report to establish the exact cause of death," said a prison officer. His family members have been informed and the body has been preserved for the postmortem. A judicial inquiry has been ordered into the case. The inquiry report would include the post-mortem report by specialists of the forensic lab. The authorities have questioned his fellow inmates. Sources from the jail claimed several injury marks were found on the body. He was bleeding when the guard found him. His family alleges that his fellow inmates murdered him. Nadeem's brother Rizwan said that their parents had met him in jail on Thursday, a day before Eid-ul-fitr. Nadeem allegedly told his parents that inmates had formed several groups in the jail and he was feeling scared. The incident has raised questions over the safety and security of inmates lodged at Tihar Prisons. In May, a robbery convict was killed in a violent clash that broke out between two rival groups. Earlier, in March, the main accused of the December 16 gangrape case, Ram Singh, was found hanging in his cell. Three days after the incident, a 29-year-old woman allegedly committed suicide in a similar manner. |
BJP to reveal 10-point formula to reduce power tariff by 30%
New Delhi, August 10 In addition, the party while challenging Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit to implement its formula declared that it will also implement a special package for the lower income groups and JJ clusters to provide them highly subsidised power with a fixed monthly bill which is permanently affordable. Delhi BJP president Vijay Goel said, "If the Chief Minister does not implement this formula even after it comes in public domain, it would simply imply that she is hand in glove with the private discoms and the DERC, ensuring completely unjustified hike in power tariff." "Our party is committed to bring down power tariff by 30 per cent. Those who are questioning it should know that if you have the right kind of intention and political will, this is not at all difficult. In fact, logically after privatization, had the government allowed more players into power distribution, the power tariffs would have come down due to market competitiveness. But that just did not happen. People of Delhi want to know why?" The party would conduct a review of the decision of the Congress and DERC to approve hike of 300 per cent in coming days and allowing regulatory assets (losses of private discoms to be compensated from common people through tariff hike) worth, at least, Rs 19,500 crore. |
Protest in Delhi over Kishtwar curfew
New Delhi, August 10 As agitated activists of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) and the Bajrang Dal demanded that entire J&K should be handed over to the Army while accusing the state authorities of its slack approach in handling the situation, the protest turned violent. Protesters carrying placards, saffron flags and shouting slogans crossed the barricades and the police have to use water cannons to disperse them. Brij Mohan Sethi, the state vice-president of VHP, said, "The jihadists have calculatingly been allowed a free run. It was unfortunate that all these have happened in the presence of Home Minister Sajjad Ahmad Kichloo in Kistwar. That is why no action was taken by the police there. The administration was seen to be on the same page as the extremists. No arrests have yet been taken place till this time." According to Delhi media chief of the VHP Vinod Bansal anti-national slogans, pro-Pakistani propaganda and anti-Hindu acts are being protected and promoted by the jihadists with the help of local administration and if any body speaks out against it or tries to stop them, they are killed. |
Man held for raping daughter
New Delhi, August 10 The accused has been identified as Ram Avtar, who is a taxi driver. He lives with his wife and two daughters in Karawal Nagar. In her complaint to the police, Avtar's elder daughter alleged that when she was alone at home last night, her father attempted to rape her. She managed to escape and fled outside the house. "When her mother arrived, she narrated her ordeal to her. Avtar's younger daughter, who studies in Class XII at a nearby government school, alleged that he was raping her for the past four years. She was frightened with her father's act and he had threatened her of dire consequences, if she mentioned the incident to anyone. She also accused him of beating her whenever she spurned his advances," said the police. The victims' mother approached the police. A case of rape and attempt to rape has been registered against Avtar at the Karawal Nagar police station. |
Girl’s decomposed body found in house
New Delhi, August 10 The woman, Saira, was living with her husband, Javed, a property dealer from Loni in Ghaziabad. According to the police, she was Javed's second wife and they had a love marriage 10 years ago. The incident came to light after a neighbour called the police about 10.45 pm. "We were informed that a foul smell was emanating from a locked house at Haji Colony in Jamia Nagar," said a police officer. The police broke open the door. They found Saira's decomposed body lying on a bed. The police said that there were no visible external marks on her body. The body was sent for the postmortem to the AIIMS hospital. Investigators said the preliminary autopsy report revealed that Saira died due to strangulation.
