Gang of snatchers busted, 6 held
Ludhiana, August 18
With the arrest of six persons, the CIA staff of the city police have claimed to have busted a gang of criminals, who were behind a spate of snatching incidents and vehicle thefts. The police has recovered 21 stolen motorcycles, 45 mobile phones and four gold chains from their possession.

Villager killed in clash over cremation
Sahnewal, August 18
A middle aged man of Pawa Khagat village was allegedly killed during a brawl among two groups over the issue of cremation of a former sarpanch's mother here today. The body of former sarpanch Ram Murthy's mother was taken to the cremation ground but the other group resisted them from performing her last rites at the place, claiming that the land was not meant for cremation.

2 years on, major posts lying vacant in Health Dept

While the season of water and vector-born diseases is in full swing, posts of Integrated Diseases Surveillance Project (IDSP) Officer, Ludhiana, and District Epidemiologist, Ludhiana, have been lying vacant for more than two years. Additional charge of both these posts lies with a medical officer of the district.

Riya Sen wants to be part of Punjabi cinema

"I was sceptical before coming here, but people here turned out to be very decent," says actor Riya Sen who was in the city for the launch of a new collection of dress material. "My mother especially sent a bodyguard along with me, but it has been a good experience," she said. For a second time in the city after nine years, she said it was a good experience. The last time I was here for a show.

GLADA to bail out cash strapped Ishmeet Academy
Ludhiana, August 18
Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal has asked GLADA to immediately release funds worth Rs 45 lakh for Ishmeet Academy here. A meeting chaired by the chairman of the academy, Parkash Singh Badal, was held in Chandigarh yesterday in which other members of the governing body also took part.


Importing finished jewellery economical
Ludhiana, August 18
Importing finished jewellery has become cheaper than importing gold after the recent hike in customs duty. Jewellers have now started importing finished jewellery instead of gold. "Importing finished jewellery is cheaper than manufacturing ornaments locally with imported gold. Importing finished jewellery is economical and we are selling it in retail stores instead of importing gold," said Jatin Bhasin, a jeweller from Sarafan Bazar.

Observing the change in human behaviour in this era of technology, a common villager has recorded the tales of his ancestors listened from his elders in a book. Mal Singh Rampuri, who has penned down a history book about his village and clan, stated in the era of new media technology, no one had time to sit on "satths" (a common place in a village) and listen tales from elders.

Doraha-Neelon stretch awaits 4 laning
Doraha, August 18
As per the commuters commuting along the Doraha-Neelon stretch, the work of four-lane project of the route seems to have stopped all together, thus leaving them in lurch. It was in August when Deputy Chief Minister laid the foundation stone of the project which was otherwise supposed to take 18 months for its completion after meeting clearance from the forest department.

Rise in demand for traditional ornaments among NRIs

Having remained imperceptible for more than three decades traditional ornaments, including kaintha, saggi phul, singhi and nath have started emerging as a choice among NRI youths and landlords. Only a few jewellers are engaged in craftsmanship of these rare ornaments. Higher investment, lower turnover and disappearing traditional tools needed for shaping these ornaments were cited as the major reasons behind the tendency.

400 parcels seized at railway station
Ludhiana, August 18
In a big catch, the Excise and Taxation Department here has seized about 400 parcels from the railway station during a raid conducted under the supervision of District Excise and Taxation Commissioner (DETC) Rishipal Singh. These parcels were without proper documents and department officials have taken the parcels into their custody.

Teachers to hold protest march on August 22
Sahnewal, August 18
The studies of students of around 175 private colleges of Punjab and Chandigarh are bound to suffer as teachers of all these colleges are proceeding on a mass casual leave on August 22 to hold a protest march in front of the DPI Colleges at Mohali. Earlier, on August 7 and August 13, the teachers observed two-period stay-in strike.

Union Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting Manish Tewari today asked the ruling Shiromani Akali Dal in Punjab to clarify its stand on the Punjabi farmers in Gujarat, who were being targeted just because they belonged to a particular community.

Book on Indo-European legal system released

A book titled – ‘Indo-European Legal System – A Comparative Study’ authored by Ludhiana's practicing criminal lawyer Harpreet Sandhu was released by Justice AP Lavande, a senior judge of the Bombay High Court in Goa, in the presence of other honourable judges, Justice RC Chavan, Justice FM Reis, Justice UV Bakre and BP Deshpande, registrar of High Court of Goa.

An NGO, CAPE-India, has saved a mongoose that was entangled in waste threads. On late Saturday evening, the NGO got an information from Harish Sharma that the leg of a mongoose had been entangled in waste threads and it attacked whoever tries to save it.

Two shops raided
Ludhiana: The police raided two shops at the scooter market in the Gill Road and recovered duplicate parts of a renowned company on Saturday evening. Surinder Kumar, a resident of New Delhi, who is also a legal adviser with the company, told the police that shopkeepers at the market were selling duplicate parts of his company.
