SA survive early onslaught
Pretoria, August 24 After they had been reduced to 11/3 and then 97/6, the home side were propped up by an unbeaten partnership of 134 for the seventh wicket between Wayne Parnell and Simon Harme. Parnell was unbeaten on 64 and Harme on 68 when the stumps were drawn for the day, having batted together for 47.3 overs today. Earlier, India A all-rounder Parvez Rasool and Ishwar Pandey took two wickets each as the visiting bowlers ripped through the South Africa A top order. At tea, the home was 128 for six. South Africa A's decision to bat first backfired as the Indian pacers used the conditions well and bowled a stifling line and length to tie down the opposition batsmen. The home side were at a precarious 51 for four when lunch was taken after 19.4 overs. Jammu and Kashmir lad Rasool then grabbed two wickets in the space of four balls in the 34th over to reduce South Africa A to 97 for six midway in the second session. He first removed wicketkeeper Thami Tsolekile (13) with a short-pitched delivery and then dismissed Temba Bavuma (42) LBW in the last ball of the over. At tea, taken after 51 overs, Wayne Parnell (19) and Simon Harmer (12) were battling hard to rescue their side, having stitched 31 runs together. South Africa A got off to a disastrous start as openers Dean Elgar (0) and Reeza Hendricks (2) were dismissed off successive deliveries. Elgar was removed by youngster Siddharth Kaul off the last ball of the fourth over when the left hander mistimed a short delivery and was safely caught by Shahbaz Nadeem at short mid-wicket. Hendricks too played a loose shot and fell prey to Pandey off the first ball of the very next over, to peg South Africa A at two runs for two wickets in the fifth over. The 24-year-old Pandey dealt another blow to South Africa A when he sent Rilee Rossouw (3) to the pavilion in his next over. The hosts were 11 for three in the seventh over with Rossouw adding just three runs to the team's total. Skipper Justin Ontong then joined Temba Bavuma at the crease and fought hard to get their team out of the initial shock. The duo cautiously played the Indian seamers, adding 40 runs for the fourth wicket before left-arm spinner Shahbaz Nadeem got the scalp of Ontong (28) with Murali Vijay taking the catch. Bavuma then forged another partnership with Thami Tsolekile (13) to take South Africa A close to the three figure mark. Just as when the duo looked set, having added 46 runs, Rasool delivered twin blows to the hosts in his second over.

I am not even 32 and can play all formats: Yuvi
Greater Noida, August 24 "I am going to be 32 and I believe that I can still play in all the formats. I have had a good training during off-season and eagerly waiting for the domestic season to start. I have been training very hard and would now like to play a few local tournament before the first-class season begins. I am really confident of making a comeback," Yuvraj said. Yuvraj seemed happy that a lot of youngsters have been getting chance to play for India of late. “It`s a great thing that youngsters are getting a lot of chances and they should utilize that too the fullest." With India having a busy schedule with assignments to play all three formats, Yuvraj feels that pacers like Umesh Yadav, Ishant Sharma should be rotated so that they remain free from injuries. “We have some good pace bowlers in Umesh Yadav, Ishant Sharma. Varun Aaron is also a good prospect. I believe that since we are playing in all three formats, these bowlers should be rotated and given enough rest." The stylish left-hander stressed on the importance of having state-of-the-art academy for the budding cricketers.

India-Pakistan emerging teams locked in title clash
Singapore, August 24 All eyes will be on the immensely talented Unmukt Chand to fire on all cylinders during the summit clash. The Delhi lad has an uncanny ability to score runs when it matters the most — like century against Australia in the U-19 World Cup final, a ton against Assam in National One Day Championship final to name a few. If Indian team is keen to dominate the proceedings, then Unmukt will be expected to make amends for his poor show in the semifinal. Karnataka opener Lokesh Rahul and Gujarat's Manpreet Juneja have also chipped in with useful runs but both being longer format specialists have failed to push the scoring rate. The failure of skipper Yadav has affected India's chances as his only substantial score (65) in the tournament came against Nepal but the match was not an official List A game. The Kallang Cricket Ground where the final will be played has seen some low scoring affairs with India barely managing to get past 200 against minnows United Arab Emirates in the semi-final. However left-arm spinner Akshar Patel (four wickets) bowled well to ensure a comfortable win for India by 46 runs. Pakistan were also engaged in a tight finish when they pipped Sri Lanka U-23 by one wicket in the other semi-final. For Pakistan, left-arm spinner Raza Hassan, who has represented the senior national side, will be the leader of the attack. Former leg-spinner Abdul Qadir's younger son Usman, who bowls leg-breaks like his illustrious father, is also expected to perform well. — PTI |
Haryana dominate on Day 1
Chennai, August 24 Then, Rahul Dalal (57), Ajay Jadeja (45 not out) and Amit Mishra (30) contributed for Haryana.Kerala were 12 without loss in three overs. In another match, Arun Karthick's (162) scored a magnificent century as TNCA President XI posted a mammoth 396 for 9 against Hyderabad. The highlight of the four quarterfinal matches was a super 162-run effort by TNCA opener Karthick and a massive stand of 201 runs for the third wicket with allrounder Babu Indrajith (95) who yet again missed a deserving century.TNCA posted a huge total of 396 for nine in their allotted 100 overs. Among the bowlers, Uttar Pradesh left arm spinner Kuldeep Yadav hogged the honours claiming 5 for 114 against Karnataka. Karnataka aggregated 230 in 74 overs after electing to bat. UP in reply were 118 for two in 36 overs when stumps were drawn. In the match between TNCA and Andhra, the former were dismissed for 261 with captain Ravichandran Ashwin chipping in with a valuable 60 off 71 balls and then claimed two wickets to end Andhra's day at 20 for 2. Brief scores: TNCA President XI 396/9 (Karthick 162, Mukund 60, Baba 95, Vijay 52, Milind 2/51, Amol 2/108) vs Hyderabad; Haryana 352 for 9 in 100 overs (Abhimanyu 89, Sunny 65, Rahul 57, Ajay Jadeja 45 no, Mishra 30, Prasanth Prarameshwaran 3/52 and Prasanth 2/55) and Kerala 12/0 in 3 overs. — PTI |
Rain washes out Oz hope of consolation
London, August 24 Conditions worsened throughout the day and, with rain pelting down under increasingly dark skies, the umpires finally abandoned play for the day with only a handful of hardy spectators, some sheltering under umbrellas, still in the ground. The bad weather was especially frustrating for Australia, who were seeking a first win in nine Tests and trying to avoid their first Ashes series without a Test victory since 1977. England, who at 3-0 up had already won the five-match series and retained the Ashes, were 246 for four at stumps on the third day in reply to Australia's first innings 492 for nine declared, That left England 245 runs behind and still requiring a further 46 runs to avoid the follow-on. Ian Bell, who came into this match having scored exactly 500 runs in the series with three hundreds, was 29 not out and Test debutant Chris Woakes unbeaten on 15. The way England batted on Friday, scoring at barely two runs per an over, suggested they were in no mood to give arch-rivals Australia a sniff of victory. Australia now face the improbable task of having to take 16 wickets for victory on Sunday's final day — if the weather allows. England did take nine wickets in under a session.

Mithapur’s Mandeep leaves Oman bitter
IPOH, August 24 The Indian team indulged in goal fest as they scored four apiece on either side of the break. For the winners, Mithapur player Mandeep (4th minute, 40th, 44th) struck thrice, while Ramandeep (17th), V R Raghunath (28th), Rupinderpal Singh (34th), Malak Singh (47th) and S K Uthappa (69th) sounded the board once. The Indians controlled the proceedings as the play was mostly centered around the Oman half. After starting on a rather casual note, the Indians soon tightened up their grip over Oman and mounted continuous raids. In the opening half, India's build ups came from the right flank with Ramandeep Singh and Malak combining well. The Indians earned their first penalty corner as early as in the third minute but Rupinderpal's flick was saved by Oman goalkeeper Al Noufali Fahad Khamis Salmeen. But an opportunistic Mandeep scored from the resultant rebound to give a 1-0 lead. India doubled their lead in the 17th minute through an unmarked Ramandeep who scored after receiving a Malak assist from the right flank. India earned a penalty in the 28th minute when N Thimmaiah was brought down inside the circle and V R Raghunath made it 3-0. India could have scored another in the next minute but Rupinder's reverse hit from inside the 'D' was saved by the Oman custodian.Just a minute from the breather, India increased their lead through Rupinder who converted the team's fifth penalty corner with a high flick that crashed on to the top right of the Oman goal. It was no different after the change of ends as India continued their domination. It took India just five minutes into the second half to find the back of the net, 18- year-old Mandeep scored his second goal of the day with a perfect reverse flick after being fed by a cross from Chinglensana Singh. Mandeep was again at the thick of things as four minutes later. — PTI ‘India was a bit sloppy in the second half’
It was a regular win. We played very well in the first half, but in the second half we were a bit sloppy. But it happens because it is difficult to give your 100 % concentration, especially when you are 7-0, 8-0 up. The heat took a toll on us (in the second half)

Hamilton seizes 4th pole in a row
Spa-Francorchamps (Belgium), August 24 The 2008 world champion, the last man across the line on a drying track after running the gamut of Spa’s fickle weather, will be joined on the front row by Red Bull’s championship leader Sebastian Vettel. Australian Mark Webber, preparing for the final Belgian Grand Prix of his career, qualified third for Red Bull with Mercedes’ Nico Rosberg fourth. Ferrari’s title contender Fernando Alonso could qualify only ninth. Force India driver Paul di Resta ended up a creditable fifth ahead of compatriot Jenson Button in the McLaren and the Lotus pairing of Romain Grosjean and Kimi Raikkonen. Force India’s Adrian Sutil finished 12th. Vettel is 38 points clear of Lotus’s Kimi Raikkonen at the top of the standings with nine races remaining but Hamilton, a further 10 adrift, showed why many believe he is the German’s biggest rival. — Reuters |
IOA to resist IOC arm-twisting
NEW DELHI, August 24 A majority of the members were of the opinion that the IOA should not meekly acquiesce to the diktats of the IOC, as the amendments to the IOA constitution, as suggested by the IOC, should be in consonance with the law of the land, and not on the basis of the conditions imposed by the IOC. The IOC had suggested to the IOA to amend its constitution incorporating the provisions to bar corruption-tainted persons from contesting the IOA elections. |
