Rain pains Bandhan celebrators
New Delhi, August 20 Vehicles moved at a snail's pace in north and south Delhi due to clogged drains that resulted in roads getting waterlogged. Lighting and thunder were reported from some parts of north Delhi. Traffic was badly affected on the Ring Road stretch from Moolchand (south Delhi) to Dhaula Kuan (around 10 km) due to the downpour, said a traffic police officer. Commuters who were rushing to their destinations to celebrate the festival were left high and dry due to the showers. "Traffic jams are the same story every year. It is better to send 'rakhis' by post or online," said Neerja of south Delhi. "It is just a 15-minute ride from the Metro station to my home, but I have been stuck in the traffic for over an hour. The worst is the waterlogged roads which created mess on the roads and the traffic came to standstill throughout the city," said Naresh Kumar of Outram Lines in north Delhi. Since the arrival of monsoon, the Capital has received 650 mm of rainfall, 44 per cent above the average. Yesterday, the maximum temperature was recorded a notch below average at 32.6° C while the minimum temperature was 26.3° C, average for this time of the year. |
BJP protests food scheme
New Delhi, August 20 Protesting against the Food Security Scheme at Talkatora Stadium, Delhi unit chief of the BJP Vijay Goel said with this scheme, the entitlement of the foodgrain has been reduced as a matter of fact. The party demanded that there should be adequate increase in the entitlement under the scheme so that the poor and lower income groups are not adversely affected. The protestors carried placards and raised slogans about the skyrocketing prices and inflation under the Congress rule. On the occasion, former state president Vijender Gupta, MLAs Jagdish Mukhi, Ramesh Bidhuri, general secretaries Shikha Rai and Jai Prakash were also present. Goel said, "The prices of onion have skyrocketed and they continue to soar notwithstanding the claims of the Congress. Instead of criticizing the BJP for providing onion at affordable prices to the common people, the Chief Minister should sack her Food and Civil Supplies Minister for his performance which has cost the common man dearly. The Chief Minister should stop making hollow claims and do something to bring down the prices of onion." "Why is there no crackdown on hoarders? Why the Congress-led UPA government is continuing with the export of onion?" he asked. |
Metro services hit on Line 3 due to insulator snag
New Delhi, August 20 "The services were disrupted from 12.40 pm to 2 pm due to a problem in an insulator located on the overhead electrification poles near the RK Ashram Metro station," said Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) Corporate Communications executive director Anuj Dayal. It is the second time in five days since August 16 that an insulator has failed on Line 3. "Prima facie, it is a design defect in these insulators," Dayal added. Thousands of commuters were left stranded on the station due to the unprecedented delay. Passengers travelling on the route are also frustrated about frequent recurrence of the snag. To rectify the problem, the DMRC has decided to provide sealant at all the existing insulators as a short-term measure and plans to replace insulators as a permanent solution. "There are about 2,776 insulators falling between the RK Ashram and Dwarka Metro stations which are being attended during the night hours after the closure of the train services," Dayal said. However, the DMRC will be able to replace only 25 insulators per night as the time available to work on such activities is about three to four hours, he said. In urban Mass Rapid Metro operations, overhead electric supply poles are located at a distance of 40 m with two insulators on each overhead electrification mast. Thus, the Metro electrical engineers will have to locate the faulty insulator after checking all the insulators in that particular section. The insulators used in Line 3 are made up of Ethyl Venyl Acetate, which was the prevalent technology when these insulators were installed. However, for the recent Metro corridors, insulators with silicon rubbers have been used, which are much advanced over the earlier technology and the likelihood of such faults occurring on this type of insulators is less. |
