Teen drivers take traffic norms for a ride
Jammu, July 25 With such carelessness making them over confident, they can be seen doing stunts, which is a clear violation of traffic rules. In a recent tragedy, where Sidhant Gupta, a national-level table tennis player and a class 12 student of Delhi Public School died on July 23 in an accident while he was riding a motorcycle, which skidded. Nakul Choudhary, a resident said, "The authorities should take strict and effective measures against such riders. They should increase the fine, seize vehicles of the violators and should return the vehicles only when their parents contact traffic officials. Traffic awareness workshops should be conducted on in large number for school students and parents must never hand over vehicles to their children. To maintain the discipline on roads, these are some of the ways to control this menace." As per the Section 3 of the Motor Vehicles Act (MVS), 18years of age or above is the legal age to acquire a driving licence. Regional Transport Officer, Arvind Kotwal said, “We are regularly keeping a check on people on the roads and those who are under 18 years are penalised for driving two wheelers with gear and cars. "Under the fear of punishment, the number of applicants who want to get their driving licences is increasing day by day. As many as 2,400 applicants come every month to our office for the same," he added. “Their parents must never give vehicles to their children who are below 18 years," RTO cautioned. |

Month before I-Day, admn puts sports grounds under lock and key
Jammu, July 25 The aim is to
restrict the movement of the public due to "security reasons",
that too, a month before the Independence Day celebrations. The Lower
Terrace of the ground will be the venue of the district-level
Independence Day celebrations. The administration's move to close the
ground for public movement as well as sports activities doesn't go down
well with the civil society and sportsperson who derided the
"justification" of authorities to keep the area out of bounds
for the people for such a long period. "Two days ago, I went to
the area for an evening walk but the policemen, who have erected a tent
in the ground didn't allow me to enter and said they had standing orders
from the authorities to completely seal the grounds in view of
Independence Day," Sachin Sharma, a resident of Pacca Danga said.
He questioned the claims of the state government and the security
agencies that six out of a total 10 districts of the region, including
Jammu were "free of militancy". He said, "While Chief
Minister Omar Abdullah misses no opportunity to raise the demand for the
revocation of the Armed Forces Special Power Act (AFSPA) and withdrawal
of the Army from the state citing improved security scenario, the Parade
ground in the capital city has been locked up even a month before the
celebrations of Independence Day." A football player said,
“Nothing has changed on ground in the state. On the Republic Day, they
stop sports activities for two months at the Maulana Azad stadium and
restrict sports activity and movement of the public for a month at the
Parade grounds. Handball, football and basketball players who visit the
Parade ground on a daily basis are the worst sufferers as lack of
practice here affects their performance." A police officer said
they were directed to stop the public, including sportspersons, from
entering in the grounds. “We are only complying with the directions
from the higher-ups. No doubt, the sports activities are affected due to
restrictions but we cannot compromise with the national and the state
security. People must bear with us,” he added. |

Doda hospital lacks CT scan
Jammu, July 25 Despite the fact that
a new hospital building was constructed in Doda provide better health care facilities to the people of the area, the building
is functioning without any proper machinery. Constructed to get the rush out of the old district hospital building and give people better facilities, the district hospital still lacks basic diagnosis machinery like CT scan, which is hurting the interests of people of the area, who have to move out
to get the test done. As per the 2011 census, the Doda district has population of around 4,09,936 and the basic health care facilities
of these people are dependent upon District Hospital, Doda and three sub-district hospitals of Bhaderwah, Thathrti
and Gundoh. The area is prone to accidents and every now and then, people get killed as they
do not get proper diagnosis after accidents. People with head injuries are in need of proper
diagnosis and the CT scan is the best way to know the status, but all hospitals in Doda districtlack the test. “We have to go to Jammu or Srinagar to get the CT scan done. Doctors in the district hospital do not take risk in any critical case and advise patients to either go to Jammu or Srinagar to get the scan done,” said Ashiq Hussain, (43) a local businessman. Doda is the home district of Union Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad. Still the health care facilities in his home town are not up to the mark. The government had installed machines in some districts but Doda district was not given a machine and was put on hold. Now, the Health Department authorities are saying that within the next few months, the CT scan machine would be installed in Doda and Poonch districts. Dr B R Sharma, director, Health Services, Jammu, said “We have placed an order and the payment has been done. The machine has to be imported
from outside and it is taking time. We hope in couple of months, the CT scan machine should reach Doda”. |

SMVDU INSPIRE-2013
Katra, July 25 Carrying a very relevant theme and presented in a well-designed manner, the play captured the minds of the audience and received much appreciation. The play unveiled a very common, unconscious
and continuous practice of all human beings of chatting with the mind. They create baseless abstract stories at all times, which give rise to thoughts. When nurtured, these thoughts become attitude and eventually shape our behaviour and personality, causing success or failure. The play revolved around a character
Ajeet, who represented the mind model of a contemporary man, whose rejections, anxiety, likes, dislikes, passions, reasons, fears, emotions, fantasies, dreams, etc had a lot to share with the society. The absurd thoughts he developed created humour
but unknowingly, the viewers were laughing at their own habits and shortsightedness while laughing at him. The
three personalities-what we are, what we think we are and what we think we should be are revealed in the
play. Sumeet Sharma as the lead character Ajeet lived his role with professional flair. Gaurav
Jamwal, as his dream, was also very impressive in portraying such a complex character. Others who supported the performance with their noteworthy performance included Mohit Sharma as Boss, Rahul Singh as Kumar, Vineet Sharma as
Simran, Mohd Yaseen, Sushil Raina, Vishal Sharma, Ashwani Bali, Uplaksh Singh
Kotwal, Sajra Qadir, Shekhar Sharma, Sakshi Parkash and Shilpa Chandan. The lights were professionally designed and executed by Suraj Ganjoo and the sound effects were scored by Pawan Verma. |
