Nervous & happy, many start college days
Jammu, July 16 Exploring their new world, most of the new enthusiastic students could be seen searching for their classrooms and interacting with their classmates. Saisha Gupta, a first year commerce student at the Government College for Women (GCW), Gandhi Nagar, said, “I am very excited about my first day. The college management has introduced the commerce stream for the first time but we are yet to get our roll numbers.” She said she had studied in a co-education environment and it would altogether be a new experience for her to study at the women's college. Shahida Choudhary, another student of the Department of Arts said, “I am enjoying my first day and we had classes in the morning in which we were briefed about the subjects. I am happy that I have made good friends on my first day.” At the prestigious Government Gandhi Memorial Science College, the mood was different as no girls were in attendance on the first day. Not much hustle and bustle was witnessed in the college and the students who had come to attend the college sat on the benches in the college premises. Tahir Abbas, a student of geography of the GGM College said, “In the morning, I was excited to come to college. The mood was quite different in the college as a limited number of students turned up in the college on the first day. I have collected my roll number and classes will start tomorrow." Professor RS Jamwal, convener and in charge of admission process at GGM Science College said, “Normal class work will start tomorrow. A small number of students have collected their roll numbers today because the delay in conducting Jammu and Kashmir Common Entrance Test which is scheduled to be held on July 27 and 28. The overall attendance at the college may increase from Thursday.” At GCW, Parade, the total number of seats available in the college was yet to be filled and the students were turning up to the college to get admission. Dr Rakesh Sharma, Professor of English Department, GCW, Parade, said, “No class work was given today but the students were briefed about the subjects. As compared to last year, the response is low due to ongoing admissions of the students.” Shashi Kaul, head, Department of Home Science, GCW, Parade said, "As ours is a leading college, we don't take students scoring below 45 per cent. The delay in JKCET examination has affected the admission process. So far, only 1,855 students have turned up for admission to the college this year while it was 2,400 last year." |

I-T raids at two business houses for tax evasion
Jammu, July 16 Sources said the hardware shop of Kulvinder Singh was raided and records pertaining to the accounts were seized by the officials. “The second I-T team raided the shop of Gupta & Sons at Talab Tillo where they seized some important documents,” they said. Both the businessmen were allegedly evading tax despite several notices from the department. The department would scrutinise the records of the two shops before taking further action. |

‘Power’less Akhnoor residents block highway for 3 hours
Jammu, July 16 The movement of traffic was suspended from 11 am to 2 pm during the protest against the Power Development Department (PDD) and Chief Minister Omar Abdullah. Villagers alleged that the power department employees ignored their pleas to repair transformers or power lines. They also demanded immediate repair of old transformer and replacement of the damaged ones. "Few weeks back, residents had also held a series of protests against the PDD department and had also met the officials, who had told them that their case was being looked into, but to no avail," said Desh Raj, a protester. Residents also complained that they get electricity supply for four to five hours only. “The PDD officials misbehaved with us. There is lot of resentment against them,” said Kuldeep Singh, sarpanch of Desgal village. However, a PDD official posted in the area blamed the illegal connections and used of heavy electrical appliances for the lack of power supply. “The transformers installed in the areas can take limited amount of load, but many people are using illegal methods to draw electricity,” a PDD official alleged. |

Man sent in police remand for rape, murder of 9-yr-old
Bhaderwah, July 16 Tirath Singh is a resident of Nalthi village of Bhaderwah and had allegedly kidnapped the victim on July 4. The body of the victim was recovered from a nearby cave on bank of a stream on Sunday. The accused has confessed to the crime, the police said. "Parents are scared of sending their daughters to schools and colleges, as crime against women is on the rise. The police and civil administration is responsible for the present state of affairs in the area," said Khairat Farash, president of Anjuman-e-Islamia Bhaderwah. |

Renovation of lone Olympic-size pool hangs fire
Jammu, July 16 The swimming pool, which has diving facility started in 1993. The authorities are, however, mum on the issue. Due to the casual approach of the authorities swimmers are forced to join private clubs, which are more expensive. "I had joined a private club to practice, as this swimming pool is closed for the last three years but it is very expensive to continue with the private club for practice," said Arun Balotra, a swimmer. “The pools of the private clubs are not of that size which is required for practice to participate at the regional level swimming championships. I had missed my regional level participation in 2011, due to non-functional swimming pool," he added. "All the explanations of the authorities are nothing more than an eye wash, they do not touch the swimming pool throughout the year, and start renovating it in summers," said Abhinav Gupta, a swimmer. "I was waiting for the stadium to open it this year, but like every, they started renovation work in May," he added. M Baba, Chief Sports Officer, refused to comment on the issue. Taj Mohi-ud-din, Minister for Youth Services and Sports said, "I cannot comment on the work done earlier but after taking charge, I have speedup the work and the swimming pool will be competed very soon." In 2010, when the work started, the pool needed to be renovated and the process included cleanliness of the filtration plant and tankers, modification of a pool, which didn't require more than six months. |

Rs 50 lakh for Rs 6 cr project irks traders
Jammu, July 16 Traders in the market said they were surprised over the silence of the local MLAs who failed to take up the issue in the meeting which will push the beautification project ahead, thus escalating the cost. The project was estimated to cost Rs 6.67 crore, out of which the already released Rs 3 crore, which is yet to be used by the departments concerned. RBBA president Baldev Khullar said, "For want of release of the balance amount of 3.67 crore, the completion of the project is held up, which is totally unjustified on part of the government. It should be completed by the time the train reaches Katra, so that the likely loss to traders is offset to some extent, with more pilgrims and tourists visiting the city." Under the project initiated in 2008, the 400 meters of bazaar, one of the oldest business area in the temple city established in 1856, was to be upgraded by improving power distribution network, shifting of cables, paving of entire road passing through the bazaar heavy duty red tiles interlocking blocks, installation of fire hydrants and providing benches. The bazaar is renowned for its age-old dry fruit shops. It is a busy market wherein one can get designer boutiques and the shops showcases the very modern in fashion and accessories. "We hope that funds are released for the project under special scheme so that beautification project is completed as it will become a major tourist attraction for pilgrims and tourists who visit Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine,” said Association general secretary Sanjay Sethi. |

Rajouri bus stand turns into stinking port
Rajouri, July 16 A drainage system inside the bus stand Rajouri is not functioning and with no cleaning, the bus stand remains dirty, stinking and slippery for most of the time in a day. A local storekeeper said there were a number of urinals at the bus stand, but without any cleaning and maintenance work, many of these had been rendered unfit for use. Stray animals rummaging through garbage heaps inside the bus stand, rotting solid waste and passengers entering the terminus with their nose covered are common sight at the bus stand. “Even a small downpour inundates the entire bus stand and conditions of the roads affect the vehicular and pedestrian movement due to the absence of proper black topping on them,” a local resident said. Rajouri Vyapar Mandal president Vijay Gupta said overflowing sewage and heaps of garbage could be easily seen at various places in the city in the rainy season. He said they had repeatedly informed the authorities about the bad condition of the bus stand, but nothing has been done so far. Rajouri Municipal Corporation Executive Officer Parveez Mirza said, “The entire project of repairing nullahs and drainage system is under the department of sewerage and they have to look into the matter. We have the duty to maintain them. A few months ago, we used JCB machines to clean the dirt. He assured that once again they will try to clear to blockage of the drainage system to streamline it. |

JMC employees threaten to resume stir
Jammu, July 16 A joint meeting of all unions of the corporation, including the Civic Safai Karamchari Union headed by Rinku Gill, the Driver and Cleaners Union headed by Mohd Younis Bhatt and the Clerical Union headed by Rohit George, was held today to review the progress made by the administration with regard to their memorandum submitted on June 4. They said the administration was warned during suspension of their earlier strike that if they failed to consider the demands within a month the employees would resume their strike. “The deadline to fulfil our demands is ending on July18. Now, the employees have no other option but to resume the strike.” they said. Employees of the civic body had been demanding re-organisation of the JMC, DPC of all cadres, an increase in wages of 200 casual-basis safai karamcharis and NGO safai karmcharis, regularisation of contractual drivers, computer operators and architects, time-bound promotions and relieving of field staff from clerical posts. |

Coalition is for govt formation: MP
Kenthi, Ramban, July 16 He said the coalition with either the PDP or NC did not mean the agreement with their policies or agenda, but the coalition was made earlier with the PDP and now with the NC only to run the government. He said the agenda of the Congress was to implement the democratic ideals from Kashmir to Kanyakumari. He criticised the PDP and its former Forest Minister Quazi Afzal for first sanctioning the forest land for the Amarnath Shrine and then blaming Azad for it in 2007 and also the BJP for exploiting the public of Jammu against the GN Azad-led government thereby making it to fall prematurely. He said Union Health Minister GN Azad had sanctioned 600 medical sub-centres for the state, including 20 for Ramban district . He explained the recent decision of the Union Government about the food security ordinance under which the poor will be given the food grains at Rs 2 or 3 per kg. He said because of his and GN Azad's efforts, the people of J&K had been given the compensation of their lands acquired for roads under the PMGSY for which the Union Government had recently sanctioned Rs 710 crore. During his speech, Ramban MLA Ashok Kumar approved the construction of a community hall at Kenthi under the Backward Region Grant Fund and a Public Health Centre for the time being till a hospital is constructed as promised by Union Health Minister GN Azad. |

Jammu, July 16 In a function held at the office of the club, members led by president Sumant Singh Jamwal and vice-president Seema Kharyal welcomed the decision of the government to induct Ram Khajuria, who is general secretary of theMountaineering Association of J&K and secretary of the Indian Mountaineering Foundation North Zone Committee, as a member of the council. Sumant Singh Jamwal said Ram Khajuria had devoted his life to the promotion of adventure games, especially trekking and sport climbing, in the state. Ram was the brain behind the phenomenal success of the Himalayan Trekking Programme organised by the club for school students for the past 22 years wherein more than 10,000 children had participated so far. Jamwal said it was under Ram Khajuria’s leadership the state had bagged a decent haul of medals in sport climbing at the national level and also produced international sport climbers. Prominent among others present on the occasion included Virender Magotra, Rahul Sharma, Shawetica Khajuria, Amit Khajuria, Narinder Singh, Navneet Gupta, Rakesh Goswami and Mrigank Kaushal. |

BJP pays tributes to Uttarakhand victims
Rajouri, July 16 Senior BJP leader Vibodh Gupta said patchy relief and rescue operations had proved that both the state and central authorities had failed to implement the recommendations of the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA). “The Congress government could have saved more lives, if they remained alert. Delay in the rescue operation has put more damage than the natural fury,” he claimed. “The BJP has provided support to the Uttarakhand government and it is time for all of us to join hands to help in the relief and rehabilitation of lakhs of people who have lost everything in this tragedy,” he said. Batote, July 16 These langars, as many as 21 this year, established by the religious trusts, societies and other organisations mostly from Punjab and Haryana are dotted along the NH-44 are a big attraction for the national and international tourists since they could get free breakfast, lunch, dinner and other facilities. “I have intentionally chosen this period to visit the Valley as during the yatra period one can enjoy free and hygienic food in langars. Moreover during this period, one feels safe and secure due to the tight security arrangements all along the highway and in the Valley,” said Kalimudin Jaffri of Akola, Maharashtra. Jammu, July 16 Earlier, elected to bat first the Baru Club set the target of 95 runs for the loss of two wickets in the stipulated 12 overs. In reply, Dewan Mandir could manage only 62 runs. Ankush played a fine knock of 58 runs for Baru Club. For Dewan Mandir, Jagu took both the wickets. Nitin remained highest scorer with 21 runs while Jagu contributed 12. Jammu, July 16 Mayank Sharma, Abhishekh Chib, Amit Chib and Poorvak Suri have been selected for the sabre boys’ event while Naman Bakshi, Vansh Sharma, Aryan Chandel and Mridual Marwaha were selected for the foil boys’ event. Aryan Manotra, Barth Sangral, Anurag Kesar and Tanish Mahajan were selected in the epee boys’ team whereas Ananya Mahajan, Shreya Gupta and Vanshika Dogra have been selected for the foil girls’ event.
