The incidents of harassment for dowry have also witnessed a significant increase over the years. "Till May 2013, the women cell of the police, Jammu, has received 379 complaints, out of which 191 cases have been disposed off, while at least 16 FIRs have been lodged and 173 cases are still pending," official sources said. I am a housewife and want to get out of this violent marriage," said a victim on condition of anonymity. Aarti Thakur, SHO, Women Cell, Jammu, said, “Some women find the courage to speak up, but there are many others who do not speak up for themselves. We are leaving no stone unturned to settle the disputes between the families." It may be mentioned here that the Domestic Violence Act was implemented across the country in 2005 but it came into force in the state on July 12, 2011, but has not been fully implemented to curb crimes against women. The Act covers physical, psychological and sexual violence committed against women adding physical injuries, verbal abuse, and harassment and threats. A police official said, "Our priority is to settle these disputes between two families peacefully rather than punishing the people as we don't want that families should break. We want families to get together and people are being made aware especially the women through counselling about the legal aspects that can guard or safeguard them.” The Domestic Violence Act was implemented across the country in 2005 but it came into force in the state on July 12, 2011. Professional blood donors thrive on patients’ misery at govt hospitals
Jammu, July 11 The Government Medical College authorities, however, refute allegations that people sell blood in city hospitals. “Our employees are well aware of such people and don’t let them to come inside the blood banks to donate blood. We identity them through various means which include a number of pricks on their arms and other body parts,” said Dr Vijay Sahni, blood bank in charge at the Government Medical College, Jammu. There are two hospitals of medical education department, Government Medical College and Shri Maharaja Gulab Singh (SMGS) Hospital where these people have developed a network and demand money for blood from patients. Sahni claimed the Government Medical College authorities never entertain such people and there are guidelines of the Supreme Court, which prohibits selling blood. Sources said despite the strict procedure, these blood donors deceive people and take advantage of their urgency. “People who pay money to such persons are taken in confidence before they donate blood so that they don’t disclose that money has been taken for the purpose,” sources add. There is no shortage of blood in blood bank in GMC, Jammu, but it is not being delivered till people get donors and those who don’t have people with them and require blood urgently fall into the trap of these people. These people keep a regular check on local news channels where notices about blood required are flashed with contact information. Meanwhile, a senior doctor in Government Medical College, Jammu, said these people have developed habit of earning money by donating blood and hospital authorities have no control over
them. |

Jammu, July 11 Every cricketer dreams to represent the country at a higher level and I am glad that I have make it,” says Shubam Khajuria, who has created history by becoming first cricketer from the state to get selected in the national U-19 squad. Son of Pardeep Khajuria, a government teacher, Shubam had great passion for cricket since childhood. His father egged him on to continue with it. “Whatever I have achieved is all because of hard work and support of my family,” said the elated cricketer. Shubam Khajuria’s cricketing journey started in 2007-08 when he represented the state in the U-16 tournament in Delhi. Before that, his father had sent him to the NICS Academy in Patiala for two months to hone his skills. “I played consistently for my team and everyone appreciated my performance but still I was not satisfied and keep trying my best to attain more perfection in my batting,” said Shubam. Shubam has also represented the state in Ranji Trophy twice. The turning point in his career came in the U-19 Cooch Behar Trophy where he slammed three centuries and scored 707 runs to become the highest scorer. Not only that his stunning batting performance also helped his team to qualify for the main stages of the tournament for the first time. “JKCA president, Dr Farooq Abdullah called me last night and congratulated me on my selection. He told me that he will come back from Mangolia within few days and will definitely meet me. Apart from him, all the office-bearers of the state cricket body have complimented me,” Shubam said. “There is no dearth of talent in the state but the boys are not ready to work hard. They want success through short route which is not possible. Inverter batteries in demand
Jammu, July 11 People are not getting good performance from their batteries and rushing to dealers to get them replaced. So, the sellers are cashing in on the situation and are selling it at higher prices. Narender Singh of Kochhar Battries in Jammu said, “During summers, the demand for batteries rises and the raw material becomes costlier, so we have to raise the price.” “The long power cuts decrease the life of the battery and old batteries go dead in this season, as these are overburdened,” he added. A local battery of 150 Ampere, which costs the customers between Rs 7,000 to Rs 7,500, is now costing around Rs 9,500 to 10,000. Battery producers say the raw material, which they buy from Delhi, is not available there these days due to heavy demand and the suppliers have raised the rate by 20 to 25 per cent. Subash Sharma, a government employee, said “I bought a battery in 2011 for Rs 6,500, which got damaged due to the long power cuts. When I went to buy a new one, it cost me Rs 9,800. We are being hit on both the sides, PDD is damaging our batteries and sellers are raising the prices,” he added. The Jammu city is facing long power cuts, of 5-10 hours per day in the scorching heat and people are fully dependent on inverters, which are over burdened due to less charging and over usage. |

Anil Sharma, sarpanch, Jandrah village panchayat, said “The people have been living under constant fear for the past one week. They are unable to take proper sleep as they remain atop their roofs in the nights to maintain a tight vigil following rumours of presence of thieves in the area.
The police should look into the veracity of these reports to restore normalcy in the area.” Sharma said the village panchayat had decided to constitute night squads of local youth, who would keep a constant vigil on any suspicious movement in their areas. “We do not know whether they are Army jawans, who have been sent for training or somebody else. We have also sought the help of local police in restoring confidence among the panicky villagers,” he said. State accountable for Central funds, says BJP
Jammu, July 11 In a statement issued here, Singh said the common people were often unable to read between the lines that although the approved plan size per se for Jammu & Kashmir was Rs 7,300 crore for 2013-14,there was in addition, for example Rs 3,500 crore, expected to flow from the Centre to the border state through various Centrally-sponsored schemes, Rs 710 crore available from the Central plan for Prime Minister Gram Sadak Yojana projects and Rs 600 crore that would be considered for PMRP (state sector) ventures. Hence, overall, the total plan assistance from the Centre to the state was expected to be about Rs 12,110 crore during the current fiscal, he said. Singh said the National Conference (NC) led coalition government owed it to the people of the state an explanation as to where this huge amount obtained from the Government of India was going every year, even as the current inflation rate in J&K stood at 8.64 per cent which was higher than all India rate of 8.33 per cent. During the first seven months of 2012-2013, J&K recorded an inflation of 11.63 per cent, compared to all India figure of 9.9 per cent for the same period, he elaborated. Singh also pointed out that the Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP) growth rate of the state during the 11th Five Year Plan was only 6 per cent, which was lower than the national average of 8 per cent. Singh said there was a popular perception that Central funds were being callously swindled or misused on the pretext of militancy, which had, ironically according to the Chief Minister, declined. He demanded that the government must come out with precise details to prove its claim that the Central funds are allocated equitably among the three regions of J&K and Ladakh. |
