Relief eludes Doda quake victims
Jammu, July 21 On May 1, the erstwhile district of Doda was hit by an earthquake of 5.8 magnitude, which had caused widespread damage to structures in the area. As per official data, more than 80 per cent houses were completely, severely or partially damaged. After the quake, ministers, politicians, survey groups and others visited the area and assured people relief packages. The state cabinet even sent a proposal of Rs 607.7 crore relief package for the quake-hit areas but it has since been rejected by the Centre. “People think that Chenab Valley, dominated by a particular community area has been ignored and sidelined by the Centre government. The government still believes that state is a disputed area, which it is not, and that is why people have been denied the right for relief,” said Zaheer Abbas Hashmi, a resident of Ghat village of Doda. His house had developed cracks in the quake. Hashmi said whosoever visited the area, from Delhi or the state, only saw the damaged structures from outside and not the spots where the damage was maximum. “Politicians didn't go inside the victims's houses. Structures are intact but cracks have made them unsafe for living. Living in these structures is risky and dangerous,” he added. Some victims whose houses were completely damaged in the quake do not know where to go and demand relief. “No one is thinking about us. Those who visited the area only deceived us," alleged Sandeep Singh of Bhaderwah, whose house was completely damaged in the quake. He didn't receive any money from the government to rebuild his house. “We have suffered loss worth lakhs and at least 50 per cent compensation should have come from the government. The rejection of relief package has shattered our plans,” Singh said. “Now, I have started to rebuild my house with the money I had saved for the weddings of my daughters.” |

Translation of ‘Samay Matrika’ into Kashmiri released
Jammu, July 21 “Nagrad, a literary organisation, devoted to the cause of preservation of Kashmiri literature, culture and ethos, released the translated work of the highly acclaimed book. It will go a long way in adding to Kashmiri literature on which no such work has so far been undertaken. The Nagrad also released its annual issue based on noted Kashmiri and Urdu intellectual, writer and scholar of international repute, Brij Premi. The translated work refers to a period in Kashmir's history when cultural and religious landscape of Kashmir was beginning to change. Lidhoo said Ksemendra's Sanskrit work was a warning to alert the elite of the society to put the nation above everything else and to care about the fast dwindling standards of morality in society. "Ksemendra had wished he could write Samay Matrika in Kashmiri, but the rulers of those times had disallowed him," Lidhoo claimed. It was proverbial dream come true for this legendary Sanskrit writer that Lidhoo translated Ksemendra's work into Kashmiri for the benefit of the masses. Review papers and commentaries about the translation were read by President Nagrad, AK Naaz, Dr Rattan Lal Shaant and Makhan Lal Kanwal also, who both praised Lidhoo for this masterpiece. “In a way the present translation can offer insight in respect of what was to follow in Kashmir post Hindu period," Shaant and Naaz said. A lively interaction and exchange of ideas between the author and those present was the highlight of the function. History revisited
