Hoshiarpur, June 27 The Punjab government has decided to make Hoshiarpur, Muktsar, Kapurthala and Bathinda districts as tobacco and smoke free, said Dr Surjit Singh, Civil Surgeon, Hoshiarpur. He said 2,323 smokers were challaned in the district between April 1, 2012 and May 31, 2013 and a fine of Rs 50,880 was collected from them.

Stranded pilgrim returns home
Phagwara, June 27 He was going to Uttarkashi after visiting Gangotri Dham on June 15 and was stranded in a long traffic jam. Narrating his tale, Manjit said he stayed in a guesthouse for five nights due to landslide and flood. He said more than 2,000 pilgrims were stranded there. He along with others walked for more than 35 hours to reach Harsil, from where he was brought to Dehradun in a helicopter. He was provided free bus service and Rs 2,000 to reach home. |

Sisters arrested for fraud
Phagwara, June 27 Phagwara Superintendent of Police HPS Khakh said Jasbir, whose husband is settled in the USA, struck a deal of Rs 7 lakh with Darshan Kaur to send her abroad. Jasbir gave Rs 1 lakh as advance to Darshan on August 10 last year, but neither the latter sent her to the USA nor she returned her passport and money. — OC

Two booked for robbery
Hoshiarpur, June 27 The police said, the duo allegedly stopped Sohan Lal while he along with his wife Usha Rani was going on a scooter near Bassi Dauad. After injuring them they snatched Rs 17,000 and fled. The police has registered a case under section 392 and 34 of the

Four more districts to be tobacco free
Hoshiarpur, June 27 The state government has already declared 10 other districts in the state as tobacco and smoke free. Heads of all the government departments have been empowered to penalise smokers while violating ban on smoking at public places. A team of PGI Chandigarh will visit the district in the month of July to ascertain the implementation of Prohibition of Advertisement and Regulation of Trade and Commerce, Production, Supply and Distribution Act 2003. Doctors at district, sub-division and block level will be appointed to check smoking at public places. |
