Passport cases of 2,365 deportees cleared
Varinder Singh Tribune News Service
Jalandhar, May 31 Most of the deportees who participated in the mega lok adalat were the ones who were awaiting their Indian passports as these could not be granted to them for want of issuance of no-obection certificates (NOCs) by the Indian Missions based in the countries from where they were deported during the past eight years. Punjabi deportees were deported from countries like the USA, UK, Canada, Germany and Italy during the past eight years. To expedite such cases, Regional Passport Officer Harmanbir Singh Gill had invited all such deportees to the Regional Passport Office so that their problems and issues could be resolved at a fast pace. He had also initiated a day-to-day move to get NOCs from respective Indian Missions in respect of Punjabi deportees. “We have already received a large number of NOCs from Indian Missions and Consulates regarding deportees. Our motive is to close files of those, who are not facing any serious charges abroad and to grant them Indian passports so as to give them another opportunity to travel abroad,” said Harmanbir Singh Gill. He said the cases of 2,365 deportees were cleared in one go today. Their cases would be sent to the Passport Sewa Kendras, which would grant them passports shortly after completing requisite formalities. “They will get Indian passports in a month or so and won’t need to wait for years. The complex cases would be dealt separately,” said Harmanbir Singh Gill. |
Education Department makes students brave heat for making Aadhar
cards
Jalandhar, May 31 Parents of SC/BC students made a beeline to schools to get Aadhar cards made (May 31 being the deadline). With vacations in government schools starting tomorrow, SC/BC students - entitled for stipends under various Centre-sponsored schemes for SCs/BCs - were told by the administration merely five days ago (on May 25), that they will not get benefits of scholarship if they do not have an Aadhar card (ie their EID number registered with the government schools’ SC/BC student database). Both parents and teachers complained about the hurried manner in which the directions were issued as well as about there being too few centres (merely 31) for the purpose in the district. Some of the applicants said they had been allocated centres which were 10 to 20 km away from their respective schools (eg Raipur Rasoolpur). At the Government Primary School, Bhargo Camp, centre, parents and children were seen sitting on the warm verandah floors braving the scorching heat, waiting for their turn, even as the centre staff closed the door of the room (where Aadhar cards were being made) from the inside. Most parents said they had been visiting the centre for the past three-four days. Raj Kumar from Malko village said he had been coming for the past three days to get a card made for his son Sagar, but the “madams” never let his turn come. Mukarram Ali said, “I have not been opening my shop for the past three days to get cards made for my children Mausin and Muskaan (students at a government school in Basti Sheikh). Their teachers told them that they would not be allowed to enter school if their cards were not made. But all we do is stand in the sun without water or even a fan in the verandah and return next day for the same routine to be repeated.” Other regular occupants (for the past few days) of the crowded verandah of the school included Rajni (from Wadala Chowk), Gyan Kaur, Savita (from Basti Danishmandan), Aarti from Basti Sheikh, Rekha (from Ghah Mandi), Reshma Kumari from Abadpura, among others. Some of them alleged that their forms had been hurled back at them, while teachers from government schools had been getting the cards of their students made. The staff at the centre denied that they were calling people out of turn, “These people have made work difficult. Every morning there is an avalanche of people. While we can make 70 to 80 cards in a day, here we are making only 50.” The DEO (Secondary), Neelam Kumari, said, “While the initial deadline had been set for today, seeing the rush and cases left, the Deputy Commissioner has extended the deadline to a couple of more days.” “While the target is to include 36,208 EID numbers of students across the district, the target of about 26,000 has been achieved. The remaining will be managed in the coming two days,” she added. When asked why the centres were started four days before summer vacations when there were so many students, the DC said, “We work as per the instructions we get. However, the target will be completed soon.” Notably, while the DEO had categorically stated that as many as 70,000 district students’ EID numbers had to be included in the government database (out of which the bank account of 56,000 students had been made), she cited the target to be only 36,208 students today. (While the 36,208 number includes just government schoolchildren, the DEO refrained from commenting whether aided schoolchildren are included under the scheme ambit or not). One and a half months ago, schools were issued instructions about getting Aadhar cards made, but while the administration kept quiet for about a month on the issue, on May 25th, the administration suddenly woke from its slumber and ordered the making of Aadhar cards for students. |
Crime rate seems to be on the rise in dist
Jalandhar, May 31 Though cases of snatching have seen a dip, a few such cases of snatching of cash bags have been reported from a bank near Shastri Chowk three weeks back and at Nakodar tehsil complex a few days ago. The incidents of forgeries, too, have shot up, especially those related to the administration with the use of forged stamps, fake documents and fake IDs. While earlier the Land Acquisition Collector had got a case registered against persons who faked IDs for getting Rs 1 crore compensation, then Additional District Magistrate had lodged a complaint against his own clerks for forging his signatures for getting arms licence. The matter related to forgery by a retired pharmacist using fake stamps of the Civil Surgeon had also come to light. Similarly, there have been forgeries committed with persons on the assurance of getting jobs. While last month, one person was arrested from Kartarpur for duping youths on the false promise of getting them job with the police, there has been a similar case wherein CIA staff had held four persons for duping youths by assuring them jobs in the Indian Railways. The owners of seven immigration companies were held recently for allegedly sending students abroad on the basis of forged degrees and bank guarantees. The number of NDPS cases with the rural police have also gone up with huge quantities of poppy husk and heroin recovered in the recent past. Over 250 persons have already been booked in the past two months on the charges of drug trafficking. The ADCP-I, Naresh Dogra, disagrees that there has been increase in lawlessness. “If a man stabs his paramour on road, we cannot control it for we do not know the psychology of a man. The incidents of snatching have decreased for which we need to be given due credit,” he said. The ADCP (Headquarters), Navjot Mahal, said he, too, felt that crime was under control. “We have been able to crack most of the cases, which rather indicates our success rate,” he claimed. |

He emphasised that youth must realise their role in making the country a technology leader in the world with their knowledge, training and passion. Sangma, who has been a lawyer, journalist and lecturer before he joined politics, said: “Visiting growing private institutes always makes me happy. I have a teaching background, hence I enjoy meeting students.” Deepak Vohra, Adviser to South Sudan, who was the guest of honour, in his speech said: “Time has come when we have to address the global mega trends, which are critical to sustain the success and growth in the country. Students having skill and technical degrees must give back to the country while serving in their respective professions.” Chairman of St Soldier Group of Institutions Anil Chopra said “It is a great honour for us that our students have got degrees from personalities who are self-made and known for their contribution to the motherland.” He reiterated the commitment and services of the St Soldier Group of Institutions for providing affordable higher education and technical education without discrimination to urban and rural students. The dignitaries were felicitated with souvenirs by vice-chairperson Sangeeta Chopra. Managing director Prof Manhar Arora, principal St Soldier Law College Subhash Sharma, Principal of St Soldier Management and Technical Institute RK Pushkarna were among others present. Serious issues can’t be solved with guns: Sangma
Jalandhar, May 31 Condemning the recent naxal attacks at Jagdalpur in Chattisgarh, he said: “It was extremely sad and unfortunate. It is strange that in this satellite age, the UPA government can’t locate a mere 200 plus Maoists, who are killing innocent people.” Sangma, who was supposed to travel down the same road on the very next days of the attack, while voicing his disagreement with the Naxal movement, said: “Come to my home, you will find everything but not a gun. I do not believe serious issues can be solved with guns.” Speaking about the issues that are likely to be on the centrestage during the LS poll in 2014, he said: “Corruption will be the main election issue. The UPA is steeped in corruption at all levels. The CBI Chief Investigative Officer in the Coalgate scam himself was found involved in bribery.” “Other than corruption, the price rise, worsening law and order situation across the country and non-functioning of the Parliament, are the key issues that should rule the elections,” Sangma added. Sangma, who found the National People’s Party this year in Chattisgarh, also plans to field a third front in the 2014 elections in the state to counter the Congress and the BJP governments in the state, which he believes tribals are not happy with. |
