Gurdaspur, May 8
With the Congress castigating the district administration for turning a blind eye to liquor being distributed in rural areas just ahead of the Zila Parishad and Block Samiti elections, the Gurdaspur SSP, Sukhwant Singh Gill, held a press conference to rubbish the charges.

Gill claimed that his force had tightened the noose against liquor smuggling in all seven Assembly seats of the district ahead of the Panchayati Raj Institution (PRI) elections.

Gurdaspur District Congress president and Dera Baba Nanak MLA Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa had all long been claiming that the SAD-BJP leaders were openly distributing liquor amongst the rural masses.

Gill, who joined as the new district police chief last week after SK Kalia was divested of additional charge, held a press conference today where he claimed that special nakas had been set up at strategic points across the district where policemen were checking vehicles carrying liquor.

He said the policemen would conduct raids on chemist shops selling psychotropic substances. "Vigil is being maintained before the Zila Parishad elections to ensure that drugs do not infiltrate into villages. Special teams have been established to check the nefarious activity," he added.

They have been contacting various political, social, religious, educational and trade organisations and getting the resolution passed from village panchayats.

A memorandum has also been submitted to Railway Minister Pawan Kumar Bansal in this regard.

"The direct rail service from Nawanshahr to Amritsar would not only facilitate devotees to pay obeisance at the Golden Temple and Durgiana Mandir, but also boost trade," said Bhatti, adding that they had also been mobilising public opinion to help raise the issue of extension of rail links, including Rahon - Machhiwara- Ludhiana and Garhshanker - Anandpur Sahib-Ropar- Chandigarh to give a fillip to the trade and industrial growth of the district.
