Four killed in road accidents
Hoshiarpur, April 29 According to the police, an 35-year-old unidentified man was killed when an unknown vehicle hit him near Milk Plant, Kang Mai. The Hariana police, after taking his body in its custody, sent it to the Civil Hospital, Hoshiarpur, for postmortem. Piari, wife of Bakshi Ram of Mal Mazara, succumbed to her injuries on way to hospital while her son Ram Rattan and his wife Sita Devi were wounded when a Maruti car hit their motorcycle while they were going to their village. The Chabbewal police has booked the car driver Harjit Singh. In another accident, Sham Lal of local Mohalla Purhiran died on the spot when an unknown vehicle hit him near a marriage palace. Sham, along with his son Sanjiv Kumar, had gone to the marriage palace to attend a marriage. In another accident, Sarbati Kumari (5), daughter of Gautam Chopal of local Sunder Nagar, died on the spot when a tractor-trailer hit her near local Mahavir Spinning Mills. The Model Town police booked the tractor-trailer driver Danesh Kumar, of local Vijay Nagar, under relevant sections of the IPC. |

Heroin worth Rs 12 cr seized
Phillaur, April 29 Superintendent of Police (Detective) Rajinder Singh said the accused, Surjit Lal of Chuheki village, was arrested on April 25 in the rape case registered against him a year ago in Noormahal. The police officer claimed the recovery was made after the accused revealed he was a drug smuggler. The contraband was hidden in his car. Cash amounting to Rs 24 lakh was also seized. In another case, the police has arrested a woman, Kulwinder Kaur, after recovering a kg of opium from her possession in nearby Ramgarh village. The police claimed Kulwinder had been peddling drugs along with her husband Kuljit Singh, who is at large. |

Security tightened for New Delhi-Lahore bus service
Amritsar, April 29 Amritsar Senior Superintendent of Police (Rural) Manmohan Singh said an additional vehicle would escort the bus. Station House Officers of the areas through which the bus passed had been asked told to make similar arrangements. There were reports that some organisations planned to stop the bus on the Amritsar-Attari route today. But nothing of the sort happened. — TNS |
