New Delhi, May 8 As the deliberations picked up on day one—with ordinances on admission, attendance, internal assessment being the tailenders in agenda, the papers for M. Tech. in Computer Science, then Mathematics, DC II of Operational Research, Statistics, DC III of African studies, DC II of East Asian studies, Economics, Geography, Social Work, Commerce, Management Studies, Music apart from Political Science got a green signal for the Four-Year Undergraduate Programme (FYUP). A resolution too was passed during the meeting today against dissenters after the Dean, Faculty of Social Science expressed anguish over the way some teachers treated her in faculty meeting. “While all the courses were discussed thoroughly, two-three teachers came to her and asked her ‘Do you understand the language of dissent?’ in an attempt to hijack the meeting,” she said. “The house took a serious view of it and passed a resolution, condemning the incident,” said Prof Rajesh Kumar Jha, an AC member. While the Political Science course was being debated, the whole house welcomed it even as a handful raised a note of dissent, he added. In fact the Political Science department will offer some powerful insights into history and women empowerment. The HoD of the Political Science department, Prof Ujjawal Singh said, “The syllabus of Political Science got a huge applaud, especially the three new courses—Understanding Ambdekar, Gandhi and the Contemporary World and Woman, Power and Politics .” |
Delhi ranks tenth in GSDP: Report
New Delhi, May 8 Delhi has the highest per capital income in comparison with the neighbouring states. The per capita income in Haryana comes to Rs 1.24 lakh, said the report. The per capita income in Delhi is expected to touch Rs 2,01,083 for the year 2012-13 against Rs 1,73,686 during 2011-12. The per capita income in Delhi is about three times higher than the national average of Rs 68,747 for 2012-13. The report revealed dominance of service sector in the GSDP of Delhi which is around 81.54 per cent. “This is in tune with the industrial policy of the city government. The policy envisages promotion to non-polluting units, especially service sector,” said Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit. Dikshit stated that the rank-wise position of Delhi as per the estimates of GSDP is much better than many other states. As regards the state income and Net State Domestic Product (NSDP) of Delhi at current prices, it is estimated to touch a level of Rs 29,4,242 crore in 2011-12 and Rs 34,7,192 crore in 2012-13 as compared to Rs 9,4,717 crore during 2004-05, registering an annual compound growth rate of 17.63 per cent (2004-05 to 2012-13). The annual growth for the year 2011-12 and 2012-13 comes to 19.12 per cent and 18.00 per cent over the previous year as compared to all India growth of 15.00 per cent and 13.30 per cent respectively. “Delhi continues to be an attraction due to its ample employment opportunities. The youth from different parts of the country prefer Delhi instead of all other metro cities. This reflects the relevance of the sound economic policies of the city government,” said Dikshit. The share of manufacturing sector is about 4.50 per cent, construction sector 9.97 per cent, trade hotels and restaurant 18.24 per cent and the maximum share of 40.23 per cent is from financial, insurance, real estate and business services. |
Five-year-old raped by neighbour
New Delhi, May 8 The victim has identified the accused, who attempted to flee Delhi from a railway station. He has been apprehended. He works as a food delivery boy at a restaurant in the Chirag Delhi area. A case under Indian Penal Code section of rape and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act has been registered at the Malviya Nagar police station. The accused allegedly told the police that he sexually assaulted the girl after luring her to his room on the pretext of giving her a chocolate. The girl’s parents and her brother, who are daily wage labourers were out of their house when the incident happened. “The girl called the accused her uncle. Vijay had locked the room from inside and raped the girl. He also attempted unnatural sex with her and gagged her mouth when she tried to scream for help,” said a police officer. Vijay fled from the room after allegedly leaving her there bleeding. Hearing her screams, some women from the neighbourhood rushed to help her and made a call to the police. A Police Control Room vehicle rushed the victim to the AIIMS Trauma Centre. The girl’s family members were informed about the incident and they reached the hospital. |
Six Lankan men held for fake Indian currency
New Delhi, May 8 “They arrived at the Terminal 1D of the IGIA to travel to Mumbai by an Indigo Airlines flight at 1150 am,” said Deputy Commandant Hemendra Singh, the Central Industrial Security Force’s (CISF). According to the CISF, Fake Indian Currency Notes (FICN) to the tune of Rs 28,000 was seized from the six Sri Lankans. The accused were handed over to the police. “On Monday, two out of the six accused, had bought tickets worth Rs 36,000 from a counter at IGIA. On Tuesday, they had travelled to Dubai and come back to Delhi,” said a police officer, close to the investigation of the case. Investigators are trying to ascertain if the six accused are operating a FICN racket. The CISF, which is responsible for IGIA’s security, was tipped off that six Sri Lankan nationals, who were going to travel to Mumbai, would be possessing Fake Indian Currency Notes (FICN). A CISF team caught two Sri Lankan nationals at the Akbar Travels ticketing counter, outside terminal 1D of the IGIA. The Deputy Commandant said, “They were asked to show the Indian currency they were carrying. They took out two notes of Rs 1,000, which were verified to be fake.” The two Sri Lankans told the CISF that they were part of a group of six Sri Lankans. Four of them had already entered the terminal 1 D, after purchasing tickets from Akbar Travels. The Akbar Travels staff informed the CISF that after verification of the money the four Sri Lankans had paid, there were 26 notes of Rs 1,000 denomination, which were fake. The four Sri Lankans who had entered the terminal were identified. “They said they are in the business of textile products in Dubai and frequently visited Delhi and Mumbai,” said Hemendra. In a separate incident, at about 11.30 am today, the CISF at the Shastri Nagar Metro station had noticed an unattended bag. A CISF officer brought the bag and checked it in the X-ray machine. “The bag contained two kgs of silver worth Rs 90,000 and some clothes. It was deposited at the station control room. At about 1145 am, a passenger, Jagdish, verified the bag, which was handed over to him,” said Hemendra. |
Man killed over loan repayment
New Delhi, May 8 The victim has been identified as Ishtakhar, who belonged to Uttar Pradesh’s Jaunpur area, according to the police. The injured are named Ishtakhar’s father-in-law, Jamil (60), and brother-in-law, Umed Alam (30). The incident took place at about 9 am today. Four people from the same family arrived outside the victims’ house and attacked them with butcher knives and iron rods after an argument. The police were informed about the attack. They rushed to the site of the incident. The victims were taken to the Deen Dayal Upadhyay Hospital in Hari Nagar, where Ishtakhar succumbed to his injuries. He had sustained injuries on his abdomen. The other two victims are being kept under observation. The police learnt that a few months ago, Jamil had lent Rs 70,000 to his neighbour, Moin (45), who is a butcher. Jamal had been regularly asking Moin to return his money. On Wednesday, the two families again started arguing as Moin said that he would repay the money. Moin with his elder son, Monish, and two juvenile sons, all allegedly armed with knives and iron rods attacked Jamil. Jamil’s son, Umed, and Ishtakhar intervened and were also beaten. |

New Delhi, May 8 The Leader of the House in SDMC, Subhash Arya, opposed this decision taken by the High-Powered Committee of the DDA under the chairmanship of the Urban Development Minister. Earlier, these farm houses were under the jurisdiction of the corporation. Arya said that the Mayor, the Chairman Standing
Committee, the Leader of the House and the Leader of the Opposition had met the Lieutenant-Governor and opposed the DDA move. |
