New Delhi, May 1
Delhi University four-year undergraduate programme now has the official support of the Delhi government with the Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit today announcing her support to the Vice-Chancellor’s ambitious education reforms.

“Changes are welcome and with this Delhi University is bound to take forward the vision of modernised and fulfilling India,” said Sheila Dikshit while addressing a packed Convention Hall at DU’s VC office on the occasion of the university’s 91st Foundation Day today.

This comes a day after the Human Resource and Development Ministry rejected requests for the Centre’s intervention into the controversial matter that has triggered a debate about the rationality behind the hurried implementation of the new course.

Sheila also congratulated the VC on the latest innovations and assured complete support for the “College on Wheels”, a dedicated train—Gyanodaya Express—that the university is planning to run on a daily basis for students, especially girl students. Currently, the “Dawn of the Knowledge Express”, an educational journey, runs twice a year.

“The University of Delhi is second to none in the world be it its academics, extra-curricular activities, theater etc. DU is the best in the country and what this university is doing today other universities will follow tomorrow. The innovations are going to stay and for the Gyananodaya Express that the university wants to run, the Delhi government will extend full help,” she said.

While hailing the innovations, she called for focus on skill development and management through academics.

“The skill development is the essence of the four-year course in the form of the application courses,” said Dean of Colleges Professor S Pachauri while promising to ready 50,000 students in skills.

“This is a lucky day for many reasons and more so as the university was instituted on the Labour Day. We want to make the Gynanodaya Express train a “College of Wheels” and purchase it from the Railways. We’ll regularise it as many girl students face a lot of problems coming from distant places,” VC Prof Dinesh Singh said.

The BJP asked the Delhi Police Commissioner to cancel the permission granted to Kashmiri separatist leader Yasin Malik for sitting on a dharna at Jantar Mantar on Friday and Saturday.

In a letter written to the Commissioner, BJP vice-president R.P. Singh said that Yasin Malik has 23 criminal cases pending against him, including murder, attempt to murder and kidnapping apart from various hawala cases.

He had also shared stage in Pakistan with the mastermind of 26/11, Hafiz Saeed, who has a red corner notice from Interpol and is the most wanted terrorist in India and America, the letter said.

The letter said that it would be a mockery of the values that this nation abided by to allow a man like Yasin Malik to protest in a multicultural society. It would also be an insult to the memory of all those people who are victims of Pakistan-sponsored terrorism in India.
