According to the police, the victim and the three accused stay at Yamuna Khadar where they grow vegetables for a living.

The victim alleges that the three accused grabbed her and took her behind her jhuggi (hut) a little after midnight. The police were informed about the incident at about 2 am.

The accused were arrested this morning. “They have denied the rape charges, but the woman is asserting that they raped her. Her clothes were torn and muddied,” said a police officer, close to the investigation of the case.

The police have registered a gangrape case at the Timarpur police station. “The case was registered on the basis of the victim’s statement,” said the officer.

CHRI seeks action against police chief
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, April 23
The Commonwealth Human Rights Initiative (CHRI) today demanded action against the Delhi Police chief and the errant police officials who had not registered the missing complaint of the five-year-old girl at Gandhi Nagar in East Delhi.

When the victim’s parents went to file a complaint of their missing daughter within a few hours of her not returning home, the police were bound to file the complaint, a CHRI statement said.

Once the victim was found, the police were allegedly unwilling to register a complaint of rape. They just attempted to dissuade the parents from going to the media by offering money, the statement further said.

CHRI Director Maja Daruwala asks the Delhi Police and the government to punish both acts of omission and commission to the fullest extent of the law, without seeking to shield the officers or minimize the gravity of dereliction of duty.

He also said that the changes in law brought about after the December 16 rape incident have little meaning if the police continue to defeat justice through their embedded subversive practices.

Starting with a peaceful march from Bangla Sahib Gurdwara up to the protest site, students carrying banners demanded justice for the five-year-old victim and death penalty for the rapists. The minor who was lucky to have survived the physical torture is gradually recovering at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences.

Doctors said her health is improving and she is now on liquid and semi-solid diet.

The National Commission for Women chairperson Mamta Sharma went to see the child at the hospital today and met her parents.

The doctors told her that the child is responding well to antibiotics.

On the occasion, a letter written by the Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee president Manjit Singh GK to the Prime Minister said, “It is a matter of shame that cops tried to bribe the parents of the victim which reflects their insensitiveness to the poor.”

The letter was submitted to the government by some students who were accompanied by teachers.
